UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said last week that Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp near Damascus was the "deepest circle of hell". Regime forces, Islamic State group militants and other rival opposition factions have been fighting viciously in the camp, where thousands of civilians are trapped.
Mouin Rabbani is a Palestinian specialist who also briefly served on the staff of the UN Special Envoy to Syria. Rabbani is very vocal about what he sees as the Palestinian leaders' responsibility in the Yarmouk tragedy. "We see Palestinians essentially falling on both sides of the Syrian divide", he explains. "I think what points to a clear failure of Palestinian leadership is the inability of the Palestinians to act as a unified force".
Rabbani also criticises UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura's approach to trying to resolve the Syrian conflict, saying it is too narrow.
