Israeli soldiers wounded in Egypt border attack

Two Israeli soldiers have been airlifted to hospital after being injured by shots fired from the Egyptian side of the border between the two countries.

The troops were on patrol when their vehicle was attacked. The Israeli Defence Force says an anti-tank missile was used in the assault.

It happened in a zone known as Nahal Ezuz in the Sinai region. The Israeli army has sent forces to the area to check whether there has been any infiltration into Israel’s territory.

The pair who were injured were a male soldier and a woman officer.

On Wednesday afternoon there was no information about those behind the attack. Some Israeli army sources say they believe jihadists are active in the region.

Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty in 1979 and the Egyptian army has been trying to contain Islamist fighters in Sinai.
