01:51little kid thunderstorms tornadoes really all kinds of natural disasters and weather events

01:57this thing's looking pretty impressive here it's like switched off of it there for a second it's got

02:03a nice mezzo cycle and it looks like just to the west of clear lake south dakota right now i

02:09work

02:09with the national weather service as a certified weather spotter they get live reports from me

02:14they usually tune into my live streams it's my responsibility to let as many people know that

02:20there's a violent tornado headed their way the ability to get that information out is what saves lives

02:28it looks like the severe storm threat for today going to be just south of north dakota so that's

02:33the good news the bad news is south dakota getting in on this and the potential for some tornadic

02:38development as well we are late to the supercell thunderstorm we're late to it but we are closing in

02:46you can see our location right here and the supercells just towards southwest right now

02:53i won this thing might drop i'm chasing with my best friend eli moving in for the close range intercept

04:38just looking at all the models there appeared to be two targets uh one in minnesota and one in south

07:57cost you your life this guy's about to get munched right in front of him

17:27We are about a mile away from it right now, about a mile.

17:31I am Brandon Copic.

17:33I am a full-time storm chaser.

17:36I work with a major news organization.

17:40Here it comes.

17:44The reports get relayed to the National Weather Service, who issues the tornado warnings, upgrades

17:51the warnings to emergencies and such.

17:53Look at those vortices dancing, guys.

17:57And it's getting strong.

17:59But inherently, what we do does save lives.

18:13I've been a storm chaser for 30 years now.

18:15It's definitely a lifelong passion.

18:17I grew up a science nerd and I became obsessed with weather at the age of five.

18:23We are here in the Dominator in full-blown tornado intercept mode.

18:28We built the Dominators to get inside of the tornado and measure data that other people

18:33cannot safely collect.

18:35The hardest part is always showing up to every storm on time.

18:46We were a little bit far out and had to drive and close pretty quickly to get in position

18:51for an intercept.

19:00The Dominator 3 isn't a fast-moving vehicle, per se, even though with the turbo in there.

19:06The vehicle is a lot heavier.

19:08It's up like 13,000, 14,000 pounds.

19:11And it's a little bit hard to be as mobile as we'd like.

19:14The storm is going to be capable of all hazards.

19:17I did have to put the pedal to the metal there for a little bit.

19:22I wasn't missing this intercept for anything.

19:39We got ourselves a violent tornado on the ground approaching Gary, South Dakota, right

19:44on the Minnesota border.

19:47My concern is if this thing moves into Gary, it's going to be very bad.

19:53The kind of tornado that is capable of destroying entire towns.

23:09This is when the tornado takes this hard left turn, and there's no heading straight for the road that I'm

23:18on, and so are my friends.

38:46Finally, the tornado, it starts to rope out.

38:49That funnel starts to constrict and it takes a left turn away from the town of Gary.

38:57And inside, I just, huge sigh of relief as I know that this tornado is nearing its end and the

39:06town of Gary is going to be okay.

39:29Nice work.

39:31I get even more excited after all these years, these days.

39:34So the excitement doesn't go away.

39:36The passion only gets more intense with age.

39:39And that's why we have no choice but to continue to chase.

39:49That was one of the most insane tornado chases of all time.

39:53So just absolutely insane.

39:55Hopefully we help, you know, just warn some people out there, you know, help the warning process, help save some

40:00lives, you know, potentially.

40:01And yeah, it was just a crazy day.

40:22Today was literally career, like a career chase.

40:26I, yeah, one of the most incredible chases I've ever been on, like in my 15 years.

40:35But yeah, this is definitely one for the record books.

40:47I'm so blessed I get to do this.

41:17It's not perfect and there will never be a perfect day, but we did the best thing we could.
