00:05Previously on storm chasers this year I want to do things differently Byron I want to put you in doghouse
00:11and put Matt in the tip
00:14I think you can see it there it is we've got a mile-wide tornado approximately 10 miles to our
00:19west this is a life-threatening situation for the people in this area we need to call it in
00:24look at that so you want to stay on this road Sean I'm just telling you we can head south
00:29right here and attack it pull forward get off the road Matt wants to take control in that crucial last
00:34minute when we're going to possibly intercept for that to happen he has to gain my trust is it going
00:39back up we missed it Sean needs to let me handle the navigating
00:46hello where's the minute
00:49we got a good line here it's not good going through this whole thing and helping people out it's really
00:53brought our team closer together we look at each other more like brothers
00:57we're going to be all right man stay with me
01:14we're going to be all right in front of us
01:35coming right at us
01:36go go go
01:48seeing all the damage firsthand that the yazoo city tornado created really changed me
01:57I've never seen a damage path that fresh and you come right on the scene and people are
02:01you know walking out of the rubble there's blood streaming down their faces
02:05you can tell they're in shock
02:12when you see this damage firsthand you never really know how it's going to affect you
02:16it was a really tough traumatic situation
02:20really puts things in perspective
02:24hey how's it going how's the flight
02:28seeing the damage produced by the yazoo city tornado was a turning point in my life
02:32I really have no personal life outside of storm chasing
02:35I haven't been on a date in two years
02:37I'm 30 years old now and you know it would be nice to finally have a personal life
02:45there she is
02:54ginger is a fellow meteorologist that grew up in west michigan we actually went to elementary
02:59school in the same town we've gone on a few dates so far and we just thought it'd be the
03:03perfect fit to have her out and see some tornadoes
03:05what do you think of the dominator
03:06you can hit this with a sledgehammer as hard as you can it just bounces right off
03:11Reed and I grew up in and around grand rapids michigan we met at band camp and he was better
03:15than me at the oboe and now we are dating
03:20you haven't been able to storm chase much i haven't chased since i've been in tv yeah it's been a
03:26while
03:26i storm chased in college and i absolutely loved it but for 10 years i've been a meteorologist at mvc5
03:32in chicago
03:33it's a little bit muggy and we do have a few showers and thunderstorms so the winds now are southwest
03:37to west but temperatures are going to reach the upper 70s low 80s today we have the perfect conditions for
03:42severe weather and the storm prediction center says we're staying in it i never get to be in the field
03:47ever and this is what i went to do with the storm prediction center and the storm prediction center says
03:49we're staying in it
03:50i'm so excited that i'm out here i might be a little awkward with chris and joel because
03:56um we don't have enough seats in the dominator so since he'll be driving into the tornado with us
04:02one of them will have to stay behind so
04:08i know the whole guys before girls thing and you know friends always come first but at the same time
04:13this really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have ginger out here and
04:17it couldn't possibly make or break the relationship it's a difficult situation
04:30where do you guys want to spend the night you don't want to make a play on the next storm
04:34coming up
04:34i think we've banged our heads against the wall enough today
04:38we're three weeks in to the season and
04:41i don't really have anything that's going to make the film better
04:46we really haven't gotten anything worthwhile
04:49it's an uneasy feeling being this far into the mission and only having one tornado
04:53because since then we have gone six to seven thousand miles and haven't seen anything
05:05that's right
05:06we gotta rest up because we have to catch some more tornadoes tomorrow
05:09what do you mean more we don't see any of it then
05:23oh boy
05:25the conditions today were really tough you know it was really tough
05:29the cars are stacked against us
05:32i want this to be the most incredible movie ever made
05:35but at the same time our mission may fail
05:39i feel good about our team i feel totally confident
05:44just need to get some tornadoes
05:47everyone out here is helping me get the intercept shot that i need for my film
05:50so i feel obligated to keep morale up
05:53i know we're gonna get it
05:54we just have to keep plugging away like we're doing
05:58sure
05:59all right guys let's rest up and go at it tomorrow
06:05i've been keeping the anger in check
06:06i've been keeping my frustration in check
06:08because i don't want it to seed into the other
06:11people in the tube
06:14it's important that we don't give up
06:16we've got to keep trying
06:17that's the only thing we can do
06:20okay video chat
06:22anybody there
06:23oh
06:26hi
06:27hi
06:30hi
06:31hi
06:31hi
06:35wow they're armfuls aren't they right now
06:38if i was not married and didn't have any children i could do this forever
06:43but the only thing that i do for money now is doing an imax film on tornadoes
06:48so those little kids future depends on completion of this imax film
07:01when are you gonna come home daddy
07:09well after um i chase some weather
07:15if i get everything done this year this season i won't have to come out ever again and leave
07:22with my family i love you honey night night
07:38this is uh the mississippi mississippi day oh wow look at that it was a big beast how long
07:47was it on the ground for again like 100 over 100 miles i think the latest what i heard is
07:51149 miles
07:52wow at this point i knew it was just something bad was coming up
07:55helping the victims in yazoo city brought joel reid and i much closer before we were great friends but now
08:01i feel like we're brothers
08:02do you know who reads that he's uh ginger came in last night so everything going well as far as
08:08you know
08:08yeah he kind of keeps it quiet to himself yeah it's cute isn't it
08:13young love
08:15yeah i wonder if she still plays the oboe
08:17oh she played the oboe
08:18i think so that's how they met way back
08:20we should have him do a little concert for us
08:23hey guys
08:24hi
08:25look at you guys chilling here at tv and hq
08:27how's it going
08:28good
08:28good to see you
08:29you want a piece of pizza ginger
08:31i'm good right now
08:32you think though her white pants would get a little dirty when you storm chase
08:36yep
08:38wait so are you planning to chase with us then
08:40yeah oh yeah
08:41i kind of want to see how ginger would react going into the tornado she really wants to get out
08:45there and experiencing the dominator
08:47having ginger out in the field with us is going to be great for me because then i can actually
08:52juggle having a relationship and storm chasing at the same time but the problem is there are only three available
08:57seats in the dominator
08:59so how's this going to work reed
09:02i mean we gotta basically i know this is awkward chris but is there any way that just me ginger
09:10and joel can ride in the dom
09:16why does it mean that like why can't you know why why isn't joel leaving the car
09:19well
09:20joel wanted to leave in mississippi wanted to go home you know and
09:23i mean to be honest i need joel there too because we've been chasing for ten years together and like
09:28down in mississippi if he wasn't there we probably would have missed this hornadio
09:31so i'm just expendable
09:36hello
09:39i've been chasing with reed for over ten years and this is my passion just as much as it is
09:43reed's and joel's passion this is what i live for this is what i wait you know nine months out
09:48of the year is for this i don't know what else to say you know i'm just pissed
09:52you just gotta understand it hurts me we saw death out there and that brought me a lot closer to
09:56both you guys
09:58girlfriends before friendships type of thing or i mean this has nothing to do with girlfriends before friendships chris you
10:04know that
10:04it's only a couple days
10:06it's tough being the woman coming in and breaking in and saying i'm gonna be here
10:09i feel a little funny that they did it right in front of me maybe it would have been something
10:13to have between the two of them
10:14i gotta do what i gotta do
10:18yeah
10:24slow down
10:25whoa tree branch
10:26huh
10:27i have no idea what's happening it's so freaking scary
10:30this is keeping guys in the road here
10:32i got it under control
10:34we are trying to catch up to that storm
10:36slow down everybody
10:38ow
10:50oh
10:51okay what do we got guys
10:52today we're dealing with a high risk setup
10:54so it could be a big day
10:55and today could be huge
10:58if we don't see any tornadoes in this wave of weather
11:01that desperation that i haven't felt yet
11:03is gonna start creeping back into my
11:06it's my guts
11:07we need to keep our own pine bluff
11:08i agree
11:09pine bluff baby
11:10okay
11:11it only happens once or twice a year we get these setups that are just amazing
11:15so if we drop the ball it'll be incredibly frustrating
11:18there's gonna be a lot of storms to deal with
11:20so just picking the right storm at the right time
11:23it's high risk days like today that i'm really glad that i put matt into the tip
11:28and put byron in doghouse
11:29byron's a great guy but he just doesn't have matt's storm chasing experience
11:35i've been the tip navigator for the past four years
11:38and now my job has been whittled down to filling doghouse with gas and washing its windows
11:43i think it's a huge demotion to be taken out of the tip
11:47holy
11:48there's no better place for a storm chase than to be into and intercept tornadoes
11:53ha ha ha ha ha
11:54woo
11:55yeah
11:55i had to give that up it was taken away from me
11:58way to go man
12:00i kind of feel like i'm being brushed aside
12:02all i'm doing is driving a vehicle
12:04and i'm not even participating in weather meetings anymore
12:08i'm not part of the mission
12:16all right we're good let's go
12:21with all of the changes this year the biggest one was putting me in the tip and byron being in
12:27the doghouse
12:28on one hand i know that's what needs to happen for us to be the most successful
12:33but at the same time this isn't what byron signed up for
12:37you weren't in the meeting this morning what was going on with that
12:41yeah the weather meetings i haven't really been necessary
12:45everything is just completely different this year
12:48i went from navigating the tiv into tornadoes to being a chauffeur
12:55it sounds like maybe you're leaving the team is that kind of what you're saying
13:00um you know this is a decision that i just came to
13:12excited for your first chase
13:13yes
13:15today looks like the biggest day we've chased so far
13:17yeah this could be the biggest day here in eastern arkansas
13:21look how big that trough is too i mean just dig it all the way down
13:24it's so intense
13:25it's got such a fun on it
13:26today has the potential to be huge both for storms
13:28and for my relationship with ginger
13:30it's hard for me to have a girlfriend when i'm storm chasing all the time
13:33so it's important that whoever i date love it as much as i do
13:36it looks like the best area is here maybe down the pine bluff
13:39yeah it's gonna be a big day
13:41this is definitely a dangerous situation i think for people in eastern arkansas
13:45in the plains most of them they don't hit anything
13:47but out here like every tornado we see seems to cause damage and fatalities
13:51i think we should probably hit the road
13:53definitely
13:56chris
13:56hey i have to call you back
13:58hey i just want to say i'm sorry we've had a good season so far and we've got so many
14:03more tornadoes to go
14:04it's only going to be for a few chases
14:07until she comes down again then i'm out again
14:09i mean this is seriously the only opportunity i have
14:11if the situation is reversed i would definitely not do that to you
14:15it's easy to say right now chris but
14:17whatever makes you sleep at night
14:21see ya
14:22see ya chris
14:42we've got ginger uh taking the navigation role right now
14:46he's just dominating sifting through the data
14:49yep
14:49she really likes to get her hands dirty with just the raw meteorological data
14:53yeah
14:53should we check out the mesoanalysis
14:56yep
14:57chris couldn't handle this could he if he asked to pull up the mesoanalysis
15:00he just wouldn't know what to do
15:01this is good
15:03poor chris
15:04he's probably gonna have to go to therapy now
15:08most of arkansas under a tornado watch at this hour as severe weather continues to move in
15:15we want to show you something that uh we're looking at on radar
15:21we're in a high risk pds tornado watch that's really strong wording from the sbc they don't issue too many
15:26of those
15:27can we go can we go can we go can we go can we go we're gonna attack it right
15:31me and matt we've been talking all day about how we need to stay up here and let storms ripen
15:35and develop
15:36but sean's just ready to get on the road
15:38ready to go
15:39okay let's go
15:40good job guys
15:41i can understand his excitement but he's being really super hyper today
15:46we just need to kind of pull him in and settle him down
15:48make him listen to our reasoning
15:50i just don't want to get two parts out
15:53537 straight ahead
15:57i just don't want to sit around we're in a pds today
16:00a particularly dangerous situation
16:03this is a huge day for us
16:05as a team
16:06and for me as a filmmaker
16:08if i get the shot today
16:10then i'm one step closer to going home to see my kids
16:13so we don't want to go very far
16:14i know
16:14i know
16:15it's just you know 5 30
16:17storms tend to form late in the day
16:19for this time of year where we don't have a lot of sunlight
16:22like we will in a month
16:23it's always an issue
16:24will we have a tornado
16:27and will we have the light to film it with
16:30stop up here for just a second
16:33hey guys why are we stopping
16:37brandon thinks that these doors to our north
16:39will probably reach maturity in about an hour
16:42oh yeah
16:42i'm on board with that
16:50brandon and i think that the best parameters for tornado potential
16:53are going to be to the north of us
16:55so right now we're just in a little bit of a holding pattern
16:59but sean has a really hard time sitting and waiting
17:03see that tornado warning that just got issued onto the south
17:06well how about we head towards that guy
17:08let's do it
17:09i need to think for a second
17:12it's a pivotal point right now
17:14matt and brandon want to wait for a storm to form to the north
17:18when we've got a tornado-worn storm 50 miles to our south
17:22there's a time when we have to commit
17:24and that time is actually
17:27dude it's 6 30 we gotta commit now
17:29but in an hour this could be exploded up north
17:33yeah i know that but if we wait any longer
17:35we're not gonna have sunlight
17:37yep
17:38ain't brandy either
17:38i guarantee you these three storms to the north
17:44will be tornado warning pretty soon
17:45yeah i have that same feeling
17:47then why are we going
17:49everybody go south now
17:56right now we're kind of playing the waiting game
17:58you know it's a little bit boring
17:59but we've got to keep a really close eye on radar
18:01because this will kind of make her break the chase
18:03we either go south or we play a storm up north
18:05we're kind of 50 50 torn between
18:08oh
18:10wow
18:11it's like sitting in a sauna right now basically
18:13yeah it's really hot in here
18:14this atmosphere is primed to go
18:16we don't faint beforehand
18:18i mean both
18:20ginger really is a trooper
18:21there is not many girls that would be willing to grind it through this heat
18:25here
18:25do you see these storms starting to fire
18:26yeah
18:27all lining up perfect
18:28oh look at that
18:29the one to the north
18:30just went tornado warning
18:31let's do it
18:32head north
18:32toward a stunt car
18:36yeah
18:36jeff bring us up to speed what's going on right now
18:38we have storms everywhere stretching from northern arkansas to south central arkansas
18:43several storms that we're watching all of which have the potential to produce a tornado
18:51the storm's to the north wind tornado warning right now
18:55should have stayed in plain bluff
18:58we will close on this storm a lot faster than we will if we were trying to catch up on
19:02the other one
19:03let's go get this one
19:05awesome
19:05i just don't get it
19:07sean wanted matt in the tip because he's a better storm chaser than me
19:11why the hell won't he just listen to him
19:23well we've just entered farm country you can see everything now
19:29what's that over there
19:33just south of the swamp cloud it's pretty hazy
19:36could be a tornado right over there
19:37yeah i see that
19:39got a little bowl shape to the clouds but i'm not seeing any rotation in there
19:43so i'm not highly optimistic with this one
19:46keep going
19:47yeah there's a funnel
19:50sean this is basically nothing
19:52come on man let's go get this one
19:56let me take a left where the power line is right here
20:20what's been interesting this season being right next to sean and trying to figure out the best way to communicate
20:26with him
20:28brandon brandon and i wanted to move north on this storm but sean got anxious and i wanted to move
20:33south it just totally abandoned the plan that we had established during the day
20:37that we're in the day
20:41we're falling right now
20:42slow down slow down
20:44it gets rough here guys
20:45slow down
20:48what
20:49slow down everybody we got bumps
20:51bad road
20:54Bump, make sure your seatbelts are on.
20:58They hold.
21:01Oh!
21:02Really bouncy.
21:05Holy .
21:06Do these people pay taxes?
21:08Slow down, slow down.
21:09Slow down, everybody.
21:13Oh!
21:16Is your camera okay?
21:18I don't know.
21:23You all right, Sean?
21:26Yeah, I think so.
21:29There's pavement.
21:30Good old pavement.
21:32Two more miles and we'll have a clay on this if it drops.
21:36What is that back there?
21:39Gone, baby.
21:42I don't think there's anything back in there other than rain.
21:49Uh, is it tornado warning still?
21:52Nope, it's not warned at all.
21:53Damn it.
22:00We're targeting this out.
22:01This thing already has a tornado warning on it.
22:03This thing's gonna go nuts.
22:05We've only got an hour of daylight and the pressure's on.
22:07It's go time right now.
22:09Oh!
22:09What's that?
22:10What is it?
22:11Oh, there's a base.
22:12There's gonna be a big tornado of tension.
22:13That's a low cloud base.
22:15God, this thing is a beast.
22:17You all right back there?
22:19Yeah.
22:20I'm more than a little scared.
22:22I'm used to reporting on severe weather, not driving into it.
22:26Care player.
22:28Yeah, firing.
22:30Yeah, they're going here.
22:31I really hope Ginger can handle this.
22:33Right now, the storm's about three miles to our south.
22:35It may have a tornado touching down right now.
22:37You never know how someone's going to react when they get up close and personal with their
22:40first tornado.
22:40We are gonna go shoot into the core.
22:42Then head east.
22:43That's probably where we can intercept to support sunset.
22:50We just got trees everywhere.
22:51Be careful.
22:57Slow down.
22:58Whoa!
22:58Tree branch!
22:59Huh?
22:59These trees are coming down.
23:00Yeah, I'm watching.
23:01Holy .
23:01Oh, wow.
23:02Look out, look out.
23:03Oh, my God.
23:05Whoa, that branch almost hit us.
23:07Visibility is pretty close to zero.
23:09All right, we're right in this path right now.
23:10Got to be really careful.
23:12There could be a town.
23:13There could be people and stuff in here, too, so you can't.
23:15I can't see.
23:16Whoa!
23:17Be careful, Joel, please.
23:18Let's just keep your eyes to the road here.
23:20Just trust me, Ray.
23:21Okay.
23:22I got it under control.
23:24Look at those branches flying through the air everywhere.
23:26Joel's driving like a maniac right now.
23:28Up in water.
23:29Whoa!
23:29These roads aren't very good.
23:37Man, we were right there.
23:40We are right under where it would have happened.
23:42Yeah, I know.
23:45It's frustrating to miss a tornado in the storm we were so close to.
23:55There's nothing on the phone.
23:57Got no data.
23:58We could literally be driving into a mile wide tornado right now.
24:00Yeah, I know.
24:01I have no idea what's happening.
24:03It's dark everywhere.
24:04I don't even know how Joel's driving.
24:06It's so freaking scary.
24:09There's power lines everywhere.
24:12Is that a tornado?
24:14There is one that will be on your left.
24:16You can see it on the lightning flashes.
24:20See that?
24:22We're going to have one shot on it at this road.
24:24I see the right edge of what might be a rain-wrapped tornado.
24:28And the GPS shows that the only option dead ends at a lake.
24:32It's basically a race.
24:34We'll see if we can beat it.
24:35It's going to be close.
24:36We only have about another three-quarters of a mile and we're done.
24:43And it's right over that lake.
24:46Oh, .
24:47All right.
24:50We're done.
24:53We are right here.
24:55There's definitely a tornado in there.
24:57Our road is dead-ended.
24:58High-risk bust.
25:00I was really hoping that for Ginger's first time out that we get her right up close to the tornado.
25:06I thought it was going to be a historic tornado outbreak today.
25:10That just shows you the emotional rollercoaster that storm chasing is.
25:12You get all ramped up for this high risk and then nothing happens.
25:17.
25:19So, tomorrow though?
25:21Tomorrow?
25:21One more.
25:22Yeah.
25:22Give it another shot.
25:25Today was a devastating failure.
25:28We did not get any amazing tornado footage.
25:31It was a difficult decision to go south.
25:33Especially when Matt and Brandon were so adamant about waiting for the storms to the north to develop.
25:39But as far as making an IMAX film, there's no question that I made the right decision.
25:43There was no way we were going to get those storms to the north before dark.
25:52Very frustrating.
25:53You know, coming into the season, me and you had talked about getting three intercepts.
25:59And, you know, I think that was really possible.
26:02You can't disregard the blood, the sweat, the tears, the passion that he puts into this film.
26:07It moves you.
26:08Camera going up!
26:09But to maximize our success, Sean just needs to do what he's doing back there with his camera and let
26:15me get him to the shot.
26:16So, starting tomorrow, I can't let him push me anymore.
26:22Yeah!
26:37Sean.
26:38Hey, man. How you doing?
26:41Well, I've been thinking a lot about how, like, the last day played out , yesterday.
26:47I feel like what we're doing now may not be, like, maximizing our potential for success.
26:55What are you thinking? Cut to the chase.
26:57I think the more you can trust me, the better off we'll be.
27:00And I'll make it happen. I really believe that.
27:03I trust you, but you have to trust me as well that it's just not as simple as driving into
27:10a tornado.
27:11There are things that we have to do to make the best possible film.
27:16The IMAX is a $400,000 investment.
27:19So if you invest that kind of money into something, you want to see returns.
27:27This film is my family's financial future.
27:31So to entrust Matt with that responsibility, I mean, I can't.
27:39He doesn't know what it takes to make an IMAX film.
27:41So for now, we do things my way.
27:44Thank you, Sean.
27:45No regrets.
27:46No regrets.
27:56High risk.
27:57Again.
27:58Do you remember a back-to-back high risk?
28:01I've never chased back-to-back high risks.
28:03The Storm Prediction Center issued the second high risk in a row for the same area.
28:06I've never seen that in 12 years of storm chasing.
28:09It's going to be right in the middle of the Ozarks, which is known as the most difficult place to
28:13chase in the entire country.
28:14Look at the back wins they have in Arkansas here.
28:17Yeah.
28:17Holy .
28:17This looks insane.
28:19Like, really, really big.
28:21In this part of the country, it's dangerous because, you know, the people that live here can't see the tornadoes
28:25because of all the trees and the hills.
28:27But, I mean, in a way, storm chasers were needed out here.
28:29So, you guys ready?
28:30Yeah.
28:30Let's get out of here.
28:31We can report tornadoes, pinpoint exactly where it's heading.
28:34The more accurate the warning, the more lives there are going to be saved.
28:42Right now, we're going to have to blast into Ozarks, which are 2,000 to 3,000 foot mountains.
28:47We're going to have windy roads.
28:48We're going to go up and down.
28:49If I get motion sickness, chance I might puke.
28:55Heidi's calling.
28:57Yeah, hello.
29:00Unfortunately, we don't have anything sellable from yesterday's chase.
29:03It came really, really close.
29:05Like, we were in perfect position.
29:06I mean, we would have had some amazing video.
29:09For years, we've been selling footage to the nightly news to earn a living.
29:13But since seeing the devastation in Yazoo City, we're devoting our profits to upgrading our scientific radar and getting probe
29:19launching cannons mounted on the Dominator.
29:21We may not have gotten it this time, but no one can get inside a tornado like we can with
29:25this vehicle.
29:26You're dominating, Heidi. You run the show.
29:28Our goal with the radar and cannons is to create a 3D image of a tornado with the data we
29:32collect.
29:33So we can help engineers design safer structures and improve tornado warning times.
29:37But we can't do it unless we sell enough footage to pay for it.
29:39There's absolutely no room for error today.
29:41We're going to have to drive extremely fast to get down into position for these fast-moving storms later on
29:46this afternoon.
29:46The pressure's definitely on.
29:52The plan is to get on the road right now.
29:53We're already behind, so I've got to get people in vehicles and moving right now.
30:04Hey, Sean.
30:06Hey, Byron.
30:07Hey, um, you got a minute?
30:09Yeah.
30:09You busy with Marcus?
30:10Okay.
30:11I need to talk to you about something.
30:12Okay.
30:16Um, I need to, I kind of need to quit the season.
30:25Getting demoted was a big shock to me.
30:27But I didn't think it would end up bothering me as much as it did.
30:31What's the point of being out here if I can't do what I love to do?
30:34There's that awkwardness between us about being moved out of tip.
30:38But there's also the fact that I don't participate in any of those weather discussions.
30:42And, you know, I feel that I'm not part of the mission.
30:48Awesome.
30:49Finding those words, saying, I'm gonna have to quit this season, was just almost impossibly difficult.
30:57This was the most shown and I've spoken this season.
31:00I just, I had to do this.
31:01If I was in a TIFF, I'd stay here.
31:04I hope you understand.
31:05Oh, yeah.
31:06No, I do.
31:08Okay.
31:12Byron's been with us for five years.
31:14He'll be missed, that's for sure.
31:16Because, you know, he's a good friend.
31:21Okay, come back.
31:22We're gonna be, uh, stopping.
31:24Why?
31:24Why are we stopping?
31:25This is my last chase.
31:26I've never wanted a tornado so badly.
31:28Let's just go see a tornado, Byron.
31:29Let's do it.
31:32Where's the doghouse going?
31:33It may get me fired, but I'm not gonna miss another tornado today.
31:48We're watching storms now developing in a very warm, very humid air mass.
31:53There's already a tornado watch in effect.
31:55And not just a tornado watch, but what they call a particularly dangerous situation.
32:02This is our last day.
32:04It's good to know you.
32:05It's good to know you, too.
32:07That thing's fixing a tornado right there.
32:09Yeah, it is fixing a tornado.
32:10We're gonna meet it in Clinton.
32:12We gotta fly, Reed.
32:13As fast as we can possibly go.
32:15Get ready for some motion sickness.
32:23Slide, slide, slide, slide.
32:25Oh, my God.
32:25We're fine.
32:26We got it.
32:27Jeez.
32:29Car coming.
32:30Wow.
32:31Terrain's really bad.
32:32You can see this winding road to the southwest.
32:35If you need to bomb, you can do it between the body armor and the Tahoe.
32:38I'm feeling like I'm a puke.
32:39And the only thing I can think about is how embarrassing that's gonna be.
32:43I really don't want them to think I can't handle chasing.
32:45All right, we're really gonna need to lean on this turn here.
32:51Oh, my gosh.
32:53Ginger's feeling pretty sick right now, and I feel terrible.
32:56The one time she's out chasing with us, it's the windy roads of the Ozark Mountains and not the flat
33:00plains of Tornado Alley.
33:01But she's being a real trooper.
33:03The storm's heading straight for us.
33:05It's gonna be really hard to see unless we get on top of one of these mountains or it goes
33:09right on top of us.
33:10That's why people don't do this.
33:16These trees!
33:17This is crazy right here.
33:19We have a heightened risk situation today.
33:21We're driving into a heavily forested area.
33:24So you have a tornado that's moving 60 miles an hour, and it's loaded with tree debris coming at you,
33:30and you can't really see it.
33:32I think about when we get up to this sooner change, kind of hang out there for a few minutes,
33:36see what keeps developing.
33:37Uh, yeah, that'll work.
33:43We got really fast storm motions, and we're in the middle of the Ozarks.
33:46So what we're gonna do is kind of keep in line with this line of storms and just let them
33:50cross us at high rates of speed.
33:53This is how you gotta get visibility in Arkansas.
33:57So if that circulation tightens up back there, which it's trying to do, we could easily have a tornado on
34:01the ground here in five minutes.
34:04Nice.
34:04So are we gonna sit here and wait for it?
34:07Hopefully.
34:07Storm is southwest of us, about 10 miles, so I think we're in a good spot.
34:12Do you wanna attack it?
34:13You know, we're losing light.
34:14When you're in the Ozarks, you can't really be aggressive.
34:19How do you know?
34:20How do you know?
34:21How do you know?
34:21Oh, I know.
34:22Yeah, how do you know?
34:23Fifteen years of experience.
34:24Oh, fifteen.
34:26Oh, wow.
34:26Fifteen.
34:27Not convinced.
34:29Yeah, we could wait here, and maybe one of these storms produces a tornado, but by what? Like 9 PM?
34:35That's too late.
34:37You gotta move beyond your comfort zone. You gotta get me a tornado while it's still light out, because that's
34:41what I need for my film.
34:42Look at me under. East on the 40.
34:47Are we really moving?
34:48I don't think we should. I think we're fine here.
34:51I work really hard to put together the most accurate forecast I can, so it's really frustrating when I pick
34:57a spot and we just leave it, and we miss tornadoes due to that.
35:01There's no reason to move. Brandon is one of the best people getting to a tornado, and he's being forced
35:08to fail.
35:13Oh my God, look at that. Holy .
35:15Tornado emergency should be issued for quick.
35:17Yeah, yeah. Oh, you see that view to the west? We're gonna have an amazing view up here.
35:20There's a place right there we can pull off if we need it.
35:26Let's get out.
35:32Yeah, right now we're here in Clinton, Arkansas. The sirens are blaring.
35:35It's an incredible couplet here coming too, just to our south. It's definitely happening.
35:43It'll be definitely south of these mountains here.
35:46There's a wall cloud on the right. It may be a tornado actually.
35:50Oh yeah, there it is. See it?
35:53Yeah, there's a huge tornado. It's on the mountain.
35:57Oh yeah, there it is. There it is. Look at this. Ginger.
36:00Look, see? It's a wedge. It's a wedge. Holy crap!
36:04Call it in. Ginger, you want to call this?
36:06Yeah. That's a huge tornado, you guys. That's really strong.
36:09Hi there, I'd like to call in a tornado.
36:11It's on the northeast. Go to northeast.
36:12And it is due west of Clinton.
36:14We've got a wedge tornado here, and it's right on top of that mountain.
36:17You can see it looks really violent. Good job.
36:19That was my first call in.
36:21I've never seen anything like this. Holy crap.
36:24We need to go north, baby. We do need to go north.
36:26All right, guys, let's go.
36:28All right.
36:29Okay.
36:30Oh, that dude's a beast.
36:32So crazy.
36:32Yeah, definitely moving to the north.
36:36There's a tornado on the ground right just northwest of Clinton.
36:40Oh my God, why did we breathe that storm?
36:43What's going on, Matt?
36:44The tornado on the ground southwest of Clinton.
36:50Honestly, we should have been more patient. You got a little antsy.
36:53Who got antsy?
36:55You got a little antsy back there.
36:57I didn't get antsy.
36:59That's totally cool.
37:03Okay, combat, we're going to be stopping up there on this hill.
37:07Are we stopping?
37:08Why?
37:08Why are we stopping?
37:09I don't know why the they want to park.
37:11Let's just go see a tornado, Byron.
37:13Let's do it.
37:14Today's Byron's last chase day.
37:16We can't afford to miss opportunities like we did yesterday.
37:19Where's the doghouse going?
37:20I know Sean's going to be pissed, but I'm going to get Byron a tornado
37:23regardless of what happens to me.
37:26No, we're just going to sit there by the trees and miss the whole thing.
37:29Wow.
37:33We're going to get your tornado.
37:34Yeah.
37:46Doghouse, do you hear us?
37:49Did you get that transmission?
37:50Um, no.
37:52Right now, doghouse has just kind of pulled the head out of the convoy.
37:55We're just trying to catch back up with the storm.
37:57They probably won't have time to beat it up there, but we may be able to get in there and
38:01get a glimpse of it.
38:02Whoa!
38:07Okay, uh, TIFF convoy's moving north.
38:09Follow Doghouse.
38:10I thought Doghouse's mission was to follow us and give us guidance.
38:13Seems like they've jetted off.
38:15What the hell?
38:16It seems like there's a mutiny going on here.
38:18Having Doghouse behind us is kind of like a wingman.
38:21You know, you can't see that much out of the TIFF.
38:24They can see things that you don't.
38:26They can spot the tornado that you don't see.
38:28You know, you've got to have a wingman to watch your ass.
38:32Look at all these cars.
38:34Yeah.
38:34People are freaking out here.
38:37Slow down, man. Slow down. Slow it way down.
38:39Slow it way down.
38:40Way down, way down, way down, way down.
38:44That wreck just happened.
38:45Yep.
38:46Tender Bender.
38:47They're all right.
38:50It smells something.
38:51Yeah, it smells like fresh pine.
38:53Like trees have been snapped somewhere.
38:57I think it came through here.
38:58Trees are down and cars are pulled over.
39:00People might have had a little run in.
39:02There's a lot of traffic backed up on the interstate.
39:05Probably stopped due to a tornado passing over the highway.
39:08We were a little bit late getting onto the storm,
39:10so we had missed one of the tornadoes when it crossed the highway.
39:14Okay, what is it? 730?
39:16Yep.
39:17Hey, Doghouse to TIFF.
39:21Yeah, this is the TIFF.
39:24Nice of you to join us, Doghouse.
39:25Uh, with light being in consideration, I believe this is it for us.
39:30So, uh, I'm calling the chase.
39:32Oh, .
39:39Look at that. That is intense.
39:41You can see the right edge of that, up over that mountain?
39:43I don't know what I see.
39:48There's 12 tornado warnings right now active.
39:50This is extremely dangerous what we're doing.
39:53Oh, what is that?
39:54Stop here, stop here.
39:58It looks like there's an edge right there.
39:59Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah.
40:01Straight up and down.
40:09Oh, there it is! It's a cone!
40:12It's a large tornado.
40:18There it is!
40:19Dude, if this was daylight, it would be really obvious.
40:22It's big.
40:23Wow.
40:29Tornado's roping out, isn't it?
40:30It's probably occluded.
40:32Oh, yeah.
40:32Did you see it, that cone?
40:33Oh, yeah.
40:33Isn't that awesome?
40:34Yeah.
40:35Good work.
40:36You, too.
40:38And good.
40:39That was awesome.
40:42I mean, there's probably been loss of life and property in the Clinton's tornado,
40:46but it also could have been a lot worse if we didn't relay those reports to the National Weather Service.
40:51And that's going to be our main mission until we get the radars.
40:53And then our focus shifts to research as well as helping the warning process.
40:58That was incredible in the mountains of those arms.
41:01Did I get to call in tornadoes?
41:02Yeah.
41:03Your report is on the SPC site, so.
41:06Ginger Z, saving lives.
41:07It makes me a little sad to think that we get excited to see tornadoes.
41:11But at the same time, we called it in, and hopefully other people were saved.
41:15The last couple of days have been real.
41:18And a lot of times, I don't feel real.
41:20I stand in front of a green screen, and I point to things.
41:22So this has changed me.
41:25Ginger.
41:26Congratulations.
41:27I know Chris is going to say that Ginger is probably a distraction, but she did a great job now.
41:31Good navigating.
41:31Great job.
41:33The last few days have brought us a lot closer.
41:36Ginger saw me at my most intent, but that's good because that's who I am.
41:39Can I get a hug?
41:39Sure, Joel.
41:40I wish Chris was here.
41:41Yeah.
41:42Chris would hug me.
41:43Aw.
41:44That was a successful day.
41:50These last 48 hours, we pulled our hair out.
41:52We came a long way to get to Arkansas, but we didn't see anything.
41:56Of course, that's disappointing.
41:58End of my season.
42:03Thanks for giving me all today.
42:04Yeah, sure.
42:05Sorry we didn't get that tornado for you, man.
42:09Well, that was a...
42:11That was a...
42:14That was a long day.
42:17These last few days have been hell.
42:21An emotional ride, that's for sure.
42:23Maybe I could have done things differently.
42:24It's just that I've invested every penny I've owned into the making of this IMAX film.
42:30This is my legacy.
42:32This is my children's future.
42:34So it's difficult to give up control over everything.
42:39But maybe it's time to loosen my grip, listen to Matt and Brandon,
42:45because it isn't working this way.
42:52Okay.
42:53Okay.
42:53So?
42:54Here's to you, Byron.
42:56As far as Byron goes, I don't want him to go.
43:00He helps me when things are stressful, you know?
43:03Yep, here's to Byron.
43:04Thank all of you.
43:05Always be a part of the team.
43:06Good luck to you, man.
43:07I mean, he's always there to make me feel better.
43:10So I'll miss him.
43:13Okay, I'm gonna miss you, too.
43:15That's been fun.
43:16I'm sure you'll always have storm chasing in your blood.
43:18Yeah.
43:19And I'll still see all the tornadoes on the news, and I miss all you guys.
43:24Oh, inflow.
