00:00So this is a famous quote from the lawyer and politician Edward Thorndike, who said,

00:05profitless acts are stamped out. Now at first glance, this quote seems to suggest that any

00:11action which does not result in profit is pointless and should be avoided. However,

00:15I think there's a deeper meaning here. Or we might take up a hobby like playing an instrument or

00:19painting pictures, even though we're not going to make any money from it. But if we only do things

00:23for the sake of profit, then we're missing out on all of the other things that life has to offer.

00:27We're only looking at the world through rose-collared glasses. You see, our actions can be driven by

00:32many different motives, not just the desire for personal gain. Sometimes we do things because

00:37they refund or enjoyable, or because they make us feel good about ourselves. And sometimes we do

00:43things simply because they need to be done. For example, we might volunteer our time to help others,

00:49even though we're not getting paid for it. So next time you're torn between two decisions,

00:53ask yourself, will the action I am about to take get me closer to my goal or will it just be a waste of time?
