Fiat plans lay-offs while revamping Melfi plant

Fiat has asked the Italian government to approve a special lay-off scheme at its Melfi plant in the south of the country.
It is part of plans to restructure the factory for the production of new models there.
From early February until the end of next year, the carmaker wants to stop one of the plant's two production lines at a time.
