Rebel fighters take position in Maaret al-Numan, a town along the Damascus-Aleppo highway, the scene of heavy fighting betwen rebel forces and Syrian government troops. Warplanes pounded the city on the weekend, killing fifty-year-old Adnan Khaled Kachit outside his house. Blown-up buildings, deserted streets and corpses of regime soldiers bear testimony to a fierce 48-hour battle before the town fell to the rebels. The capture of Maaret al-Numan on October 10, 2012 was a major breathrough for the rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad's forces, especially after they cut off the highway linking Damascus with the northern city of Aleppo.
