Machu Picchu was located in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, a young Yale history lecturer with a passion for exploration. Four years later, while trying to prove that Machu Picchu was the legendary Lost City of the Incas, Bingham also found "the ruins of an old Inca road leading out of the valley in the direction of this amazing place.
