00:00Is this one of the reasons why we're not seeing really good quarterback play in the game itself?
00:04Because that position takes so much time when it comes to developing.
00:08And then you want to develop a backup quarterback and you don't get the reps.
00:13Back in the day, we used to practice for three hours.
00:16And plus all the exhibition football and the time you have in the spring and all that.
00:20How much has that really affected the play at the quarterback position, the CBA that we have right now in
00:26the game?
00:27See, I got out when that came in.
00:29I didn't want to deal with it, to be honest with you.
00:31I was at the age of getting close to retirement.
00:32And I couldn't imagine having quarterbacks play without a spring.
00:38You said snaps, the number of snaps they take.
00:41And you can go out and throw the receivers, the timing of it, and the footwork.
00:46And you can have seven on seven.
00:48You can go one on one with the secondary.
00:50You're all in shorts and helmet.
00:52And there's so much from a skill level that can be developed and brought up.
00:56And the speed of the game they can get adjusted to.
00:59And so they're not thinking about stuff like they've got a race to catch up, you know, these young kids
01:04when they come to the league.
01:05And I think it's invaluable.
01:06And I think it's a travesty what happened.
01:08A bunch of veterans that were in there in the NFLPA, they didn't want to be there in the spring.
01:13So they got rid of it.
01:14And what's happened, it's killed all these young kids coming to the league ever since.
01:18And it's stymied their development.
01:20Some of them have fallen through the cracks because they just didn't get any snaps.
01:25Man, Coach, you know, you mentioned that here.
01:27And you see some of the things that go on here.
01:29You saw Sam Darnold a couple years ago, too.
01:32We're talking with snaps here.
01:34Coach, I'm wondering, how much of an investment do you think organizations don't want to make in that backup quarterback?
01:40Because it's going to be a big storyline this weekend.
01:42You mentioned it.
01:43It happened to you in Chicago.
01:44I mean, it just seems to me that the investments that are not being made at that position.
01:49Here's a number for you, Coach.
01:50Last year, over 63 different quarterbacks took some snap or another.
01:55So that means the backup guy got into football games.
01:59And that's essential to that position.
02:01You can't have your season go sideways.
02:03Look at what you're singing up with John Harbaugh.
02:05Coach, that's a hell of a job going on up there.
02:07He's got three different quarterbacks, albeit they were former first-round draft choices.
02:12But that's coaching the position, isn't it, and being able to get the most out of the guys.
02:18You know what's crazy?
02:19This will blow your mind.
02:20Defensive head coaches in Lovey did this.
02:23They just wanted to carry two quarterbacks on the roster.
02:25They're chilling that one for a while.
02:27How do you do that, especially if you're not sure number two is good enough, you know?
02:31So I don't get it.
02:33I just don't understand it.
02:35I know that it's a money thing for a lot of guys.
02:37And sometimes in that situation with Cutler, they didn't want to bring somebody of Mark
02:42Bolger's stature in because they thought it would upset him.
02:45Those are silly, silly, silly reasons, you know?
02:48And a lot of times, like you said, Dan, it goes back to money.
02:52They just don't want to spend the money on it.
02:54But, boy, I tell you what, you want to spend the money when you don't have number one.
02:57It's the middle of the season.
02:58You're a good football team.
02:59Then you're kicking yourself, wishing you had.
03:01You're a good one.
