00:02The 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games continue to light up the Senegalese capital.
00:07The atmosphere is electric, especially here at the Olympic swimming pool, as you can see behind me,
00:12with the 3x3 basketball tournament.
00:15And what we'll remember most about the first week, a dazzling week full of excitement and spectacular finishes,
00:21is how African athletes did the continent proud.
00:24Let's start with Kenya, which became the first African nation to win the Women's Rugby Sevens tournament.
00:34Madagascar also won its first Olympic medal, a historic moment, also in Women's Rugby Sevens.
00:40On the men's side, France took the title.
00:43In terms of the medal count, Egypt stands out as the highest-ranked African nation,
00:48with three gold medals and one bronze.
00:50It is also the only nation alongside South Africa to rank among the world's top ten.
00:56The rankings are led by Japan with 14 medals, including eight gold,
01:01followed by China with 12 medals, seven of them gold,
01:04and Russia rounding out the top three with five medals, including three gold.
01:12In terms of individual performances,
01:14Japan's Mana Ishikawa stands out as clearly the athlete of this first week of competition.
01:21The 17-year-old swimmer has won four gold medals, all on her own,
01:26and as we wait for more medals, perhaps for Africa, perhaps for Senegal,
01:30which is still waiting for its second medal after the bronze won in Judo.
01:34Judo, a medal of bronze.
