Jim Costa and Jon Jansen debate whether the Detroit Lions are walking into a classic trap game this Sunday in Miami. While some fans are expecting a double-digit blowout against the 1–6 Dolphins, the hosts and text line examine why this matchup could be much trickier than it looks on paper—especially with Detroit’s defense heavily depleted and an international trip to Germany looming next week.

00:06is this a bad spot for the lions on sunday the classic trap game 248-539-9797 jim costa john
00:14jansen heather park gov and greg behind the glass man bun mike training with us this week
00:19you tell us we got people putting in requests like we're a music station this should be a
00:25costa lock this week oh and goes as far as to say they're going to double digit disco these
00:30dolphins that's chris in a car oh we almost had it well i hit the button he oh i drew
00:40that again
00:41there we go we both turned our keys now it's like a submarine uh-huh yeah we're locked in we're
00:47ready
00:47to go now we're in yeah nukes are ready that's not how it works you don't get to text in
00:53like
00:55request the costa lock no no you you mean you have to be moved that way earlier in the morning
01:00you you wake up and you're victimized as a listener with a costa lock it's conviction from me that
01:05that uh you just can't request i'm i'm very confident that this team will respond i know
01:10that they're going to be down a couple of key components defensively but i think that this
01:15is a team that is going to respond and maybe the letdown the big letdown is going to be on
01:19that trip
01:19to germany that's next week's problem right texas i don't think this is a dangerous spot if any coach
01:26knows how to use jack campbell's situation to better his football team it feels like dan campbell
01:33master motivator they're going to fire on all cylinders and they're going to be doing it by
01:38honoring jack not letting him down yeah well that's probably part of the game you play yeah yeah
01:43there's a heavy part of this week that plays into that texas it does feel like a trap game once
01:50again our defense is depleted i am pretty concerned how about this their head coach as a dc swept the
01:57lions last year john had made that reference earlier the familiarity yeah i i understand that but it's
02:02also like the lions last year were offensively were completely different than they were this year
02:08and i mean if you go even go back two years he was jeff halfley was still a dc two
02:12years ago
02:13and when when the lions have a good offensive line it's it's been a different story going up against
02:21him texas the dolphins may have a bad record but their offense isn't that bad watch out for malik
02:28washington is one of their unheralded receivers for people who haven't taken caleb douglas is actually
02:34the guy i would watch out for rookie receiver texas tech he's missed sometime this year but
02:40has flashed and all it takes is him winning a one-on-one bigger receiver six four the other
02:47thing i would say we got a text that suggests the lions game plan is pretty simple just run the
02:50ball
02:5135 carry should be the goal miami despite being a one in six football team is not one of these
02:55teams
02:55that has given up a ton of rushing yards i think they're about average like 16th in the nfl and
02:59you
02:59would think a team that's one in six late game teams would tack on an extra 30 or 40 yards
03:04just
03:04kind of running out the clock and yet miami's at least been respectable stopping the run yeah but
03:10that i mean this is a rush offense that is one of the better rush offenses in the nfl so
03:17it's it's it's
03:18not as easy to stop them as it is the jets offense how about this is the nawaski game dolphins
03:24sushi
03:24platter lions about to eat double digit win nawaski has a great game who do you expect in that linebacker
03:31room to play a bigger role well i mean the guys that that dan talked about it's it's going to
03:40be
03:40listed the whole team well yeah but i think it's derrick barnes i think is going to be expected to
03:47do
03:47a lot more than he's done and and he's the guy that is he's the most veteran guy up there
03:53the most
03:54accomplished guy up there did they give him the green dot that's a good question um because dan
04:01didn't commit to any one person early in middle of the week well here's the thing is derrick barnes
04:08plays a different position than jack campbell and malcolm rodriza malcolm rodriguez plays a different
04:14position than jack campbell are they going with amon as their middle linebacker and then and he
04:22wears the green dot well and the green dot should be on the field all the time all the time
04:27and if
04:28they're going to rotate linebackers it feels like the guy that wouldn't get rotated out very often
04:32would be the green dot would be barnes even though he's not the mic linebacker right but it's not
04:37john you could maybe speak to this even better it's not every team puts the green dot on the mic
04:41no and it could it probably will be derrick barnes but the issue is communication at that point
04:46if you're not in that middle linebacker spot the reason the middle linebacker frequently wears the
04:51green dot is because he is the one that is best positioned to be you know connecting the back
04:57end with the front end and making sure that everybody is in the right place at the right time
05:01um and so that that may be the biggest loss not just jack campbell as a player but jack campbell
05:08as a
05:08a defensive play caller and how do they work are there bumps along the way as they start working
05:15through some of those the process of getting the defensive play called and everybody on the
05:21same page uh could you put the green dot on a safety it's rare but well i mean yes you
05:30could i
05:30mean he's already got the green mouthpiece that's sticking out of his helmet brian branch but how many
05:35plays is brian branch going to play well they've ramped him up and the good news yesterday is he was
05:40practicing don't put it on don't put it on chuck clark you can't even notice jordan addison flying
05:46by oh god so it's that's going to be a big question um in regards to who's going to be
05:54wearing the green
05:54dot and is it going to be multiple guys because there's not one guy that's going to be out there
05:59every single play does that breakdown and communication play into this trap game narrative
06:05well it doesn't mean the lions lose but it's like wait it was third and eight and we had this
06:09check
06:10on but it didn't get passed on to this level the defense or this side of the field and we
06:14just gave
06:15up a big explosive right and a drive continued that shouldn't it very well could that's one of the
06:19risks that you run and it is a lot of things that you're missing by not having jack campbell out
06:24there first of all the player but second of all the guy that wears the green dot that is getting
06:28everybody in the right place before the ball is snapped got a text that said shep at his post game
06:34there's a midweek press conference uh texter claims that barnes will be the green dot per calvin
06:40shepherd which is probably the most likely scenario anyway uh birchie also had that in his 97 one
06:46the ticket.com article so we're getting some feedback on that this one just says connect the
06:51back end with the front end using a beef stick it's always a possibility but let me ask you this
06:59and
06:59obviously the the injuries play a huge part when i ask this question defensively the first four games
07:07they allowed 30 over 31 points per game in the last three games they've allowed just over 17 points
07:15per game again injuries are a big factor this week but which defense do you trust what they were in
07:24the
07:24first four what they were in the last three and then throw in the mix that there is an upheaval
07:30in
07:30the amount of guys that are going to be out that won't be participating this week yeah if you told
07:35me
07:35we had the healthy defense i would say hey i think they're turning a corner and i i think that's
07:40more
07:40of who they are with the injuries i'm concerned you're going to see the backslide into more of what
07:44we saw the first few weeks of the season but what does that backslide mean against the team like
07:49it means miami hangs in but okay so they hang in but does it cost them the game no they
07:57ended up
07:57beating the jets and and um the saints but i could see it kind of like that game does that
08:01make sense
08:01where you're like yeah yeah we probably should have put these guys away they hung around our defense
08:05gave up one too many plays and we're suddenly sweating out the final possession those were both
08:10one score games a one point game in week one i could see it regressing a little more that way
08:15and that doesn't have to be permanent like you know dj want him is he going to play he was
08:20a no
08:20participant practice dj reed a no participant you know and and jack campbell of course not going to
08:24play kirby joseph not going to play if you start getting all of these guys back then maybe it looks
08:32more like this this last three week stretch right and and and so if you don't have want i'm up
08:37there
08:38at which it's i i don't expect dj want him to be playing in this game um then it is
08:44okay what what
08:45are you going to get from derrick barnes because it hasn't been a whole lot lately but he's going to
08:49have to step up and fill that void well how many roles is he i'm not sorry not derrick barnes
08:53i'm
08:53talking about derrick more yes not not a great start to his rookie campaign rookie season no so
09:01hey opportunity man but it hasn't been there they're playing uh lacy a good good amount to it
09:07and i mean do you are you going to finally see a little bit more of uh hassanen this could
09:12be the
09:12game he finally gets activated i know he's been chomping at the bit so there you go two four eight
09:17five three nine 97 97 but we got text we got feedback want to know if this is a trap
09:21game for
09:21the lions as they go down to south beach to play the dolphins cookie jar at 7 35 including one
09:27question
09:27that i don't think john understands no i'm scratching my head i don't know i only got another 20 minutes
09:33to
09:33try to explain it to you it's 97 one
