A major political showdown is unfolding in Maine as former Republican Governor Paul LePage declares victory in the closely contested race for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District. LePage claims he has secured the seat, leading Democratic candidate and State Auditor Matt Dunlap by thousands of votes. However, the Associated Press has not officially called the race, with vote counting still underway and 94% of ballots reported. The tight contest could have significant implications for Republican control of the U.S. House of Representatives. As both sides await the final results, questions remain over whether LePage’s victory declaration will hold or whether Dunlap can close the gap in the remaining votes.

00:17Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. I'm Andre Cushing. I'm a County Commissioner here in Penobscot.
00:22I had the honor of working with Governor LePage when he served this state as governor.
00:27He's made the commitment to come back and give his time and his effort to make Maine resonate in Washington.
00:35It's been an interesting night. We're grateful to have this opportunity to look for someone who's going to be a
00:43leader for our state of Maine.
00:44And without further ado, Congressman-elect Paul LePage.
00:53Thank you all. I'll tell you, I can only say that we're a small team, but we're a hard-working
01:01team.
01:01And for the last year and a half, we've been going around the state in the 2nd District.
01:06And I want to tell you, I'm going to say I've been going around the state because the 2nd District
01:13is almost 85 or 90 percent of the state.
01:18A lot of miles around. I'm very, very pleased for the outcome.
01:23Looking forward to going to Washington and doing what I said I was going to do is work for the
01:28Maine people.
01:29And this is my gig. If it helps Maine, I'm going to be all over it. If it hurts Maine,
01:36I'm going to be all against it.
01:37And I will work with anyone and everyone that wants to put Maine first.
01:42And so thank you.
01:49And now I'm going home to sleep.
01:53I'm going to sleep for the next 20 hours.
01:56Thank you so much.
02:11So it sounds like you're declaring victory. Not all votes have been counted. It's a very close race.
02:23Well, the public numbers have us up about 4,000, and the team has been calling all the towns that
02:30haven't come in yet.
02:32And there's no path to victory for my opponent.
02:34So you aren't declaring victory?
02:35I am declaring victory.
02:43I think it's a very close race. What were the emotions throughout the night and this morning watching the results
02:49come in?
02:49Dead tired. Period. Dead tired.
02:53One more.
02:54And up and down, up and down, up and down. And it's strange.
02:58I think we're at 49.99 or some crazy number. Just right around 50%. So we're real pleased with that.
03:07One more.
03:07What was it like knowing that we're the only district to have flipped it to a Republican seat?
03:12And what is it going to be like for you going into a now Democrat-controlled Congress?
03:17I'm going to tell you. It's like I said. If it helps Maine, I'm all in. If it hurts Maine,
03:23I'm all out.
03:24And I will work with anybody to help make this country a better country.
03:28Thank you, guys.
03:30Thank you, guys.
