Nithya Raman has defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass to become Los Angeles' next mayor — the city's first South Asian mayor and first Asian American mayor. The 45-year-old urban planner won 52 percent to 48 percent, a lead of about 34,000 votes, in the first defeat of a sitting LA mayor since 2005. Bass conceded on Thursday and called Raman to congratulate her.
