00:00Everybody's going to try to run this election on the other side.
00:02That should concern everybody.
00:06Please welcome to the stage, Iowa Democratic nominee for Senate, Josh Turek.
00:36Good evening, Iowa.
00:41Iowa sure does love an underdog, and we have done it tonight.
00:50After ten months traveling this state and hundreds of events meeting with Iowans in every corner of the state,
00:55I am proud to say that we have won this primary.
01:01My name is Josh Turek, and I am honored to be your nominee to be the next United States Senator
01:08from Iowa.
01:13This campaign has always been about having a Senator from Iowa fighting for the people of Iowa,
01:18not for the billionaires of the large corporations.
01:21This campaign has been about fighting for the middle class, working families, rural communities,
01:26small family farms, and working with anyone to address rising costs, stagnant incomes, and out-of-control corruption in D
01:33.C.
01:34Iowans all over this state have heard our message and felt hope that we can change this state and change
01:40this country.
01:41Tonight is proof of that.
01:47I first want to congratulate Zach Walls on running a strong campaign.
01:51He and I just spoke on the phone.
01:56Zach has been an exceptional representative for his district and a true public servant for the people of Iowa.
02:01I am grateful for this primary. It has made me a stronger candidate.
02:06To Zach's supporters, I know I was not your first choice.
02:09But I ask each and every one of you to join our campaign to push for change.
02:14Together we are going to build an Iowa that people move to, not away from.
02:21In my travels through the state, wherever I go, I hear the same things.
02:25Iowans are hurting.
02:27Families are struggling just to keep food on the table and a roof above their heads.
02:30Farmers are living in constant fear of foreclosure.
02:34We are in a senseless Middle East war that is driving up cash prices here at home.
02:38Our rural communities are disappearing.
02:41Hospitals and schools are closing here.
02:43Our public schools are falling behind.
02:45Iowa is now nearly dead last for economic growth, personal income growth, OBGYNs, mental health providers.
02:52We have closed 250 more health care clinics than we've opened in the last 15 years.
02:57We have a cancer crisis, a water quality crisis.
03:01This is not the Iowa that I grew up in.
03:03This is not the state that we all love.
03:06But I am feeling hope here in Iowa for the first time in a very long time.
03:17And this is because Iowans know that we need change.
03:20The status quo is not working.
03:23We need a fighter for the people, not for the billionaires, large corporations, and political donors.
03:28And this is our chance to change this state.
03:32My story is truly the American dream.
03:35In no other country on earth could someone born into a working class family from Council Bless Iowa,
03:40who went to the Goodwill, shared clothes, had the wrong color lunch ticket,
03:45who was born with my disability of spina bifida due to my father's exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam,
03:50who had 21 surgeons before the age of 12, be able to represent the United States in four Paralympic Games
03:56and bring home two gold medals and represent their community in the legislature.
04:00Only in America is that possible.
04:02And I am running for the United States Senate to protect that American dream for future generations.
04:15I got into politics just four years ago because while working in healthcare,
04:19I saw firsthand how the privatization of Medicaid was leading to a 1,000% increase in denials and delays
04:26for people with conditions like muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig's disease.
04:29It was fundamentally wrong and I decided to do something about it.
04:33So I ran in red western Iowa to represent my hometown in the Iowa legislature.
04:38I wanted to be a voice for the voiceless, for the Iowans who cannot afford a lobbyist.
04:42I won that first race by dragging my wheelchair upstairs every single day to talk to voters,
04:50regardless of party next to their name.
04:52Neighbor by neighbor.
04:54Iowans by Iowans.
04:55I won them over.
04:56I won that first race by just six votes.
04:59So never doubt that your vote matters.
05:01It does and it can be all of the difference.
05:04I won that race because there's more that unites us than divides us.
05:08They trusted I knew what they were going through because I had lived it myself.
05:14I've had to fight my whole life and this is what is needed in D.C.
05:19People who have gone through real struggle, who know what it's like to not have enough,
05:24who know what a gallon of gas costs, who have had to put groceries on a credit card.
05:29We have enough millionaires in D.C. looking out for billionaires.
05:32We need real people in Washington who have felt the consequences of a broken system
05:37because when you have gone through real struggle, you will have a different level of empathy and a different level
05:42of fight.
05:42And this is what we need in D.C.
05:44Fighters for the people.
05:45And that is what I will be in the United States Senate.
05:55Not someone like Ashley Henson who has voted to take health care away from 110,000 Iowans just to give
06:01tax breaks to billionaires.
06:02She voted to make health care more expensive, so 119,000 Iowans saw their health care premiums double and even
06:09triple.
06:09She backed cuts to veterans' health care.
06:12She voted four times in favor of the tariffs that have decimated our farmers.
06:16She supported raising the age for Social Security.
06:19She even sponsored a total abortion ban, even as 93% of Iowans say it goes too far.
06:27Ashley Henson is a multimillionaire who has increased her wealth by up to 10 times since she got to Congress
06:32and refused to support a ban on members of Congress and their families from owning and trading stock.
06:38She has taken over $3.6 million in corporate PAC money.
06:42She does not represent Iowa and does not represent our values.
06:48And tonight, Iowa, we have had enough.
06:59So my promise to you, I am going to the United States Senate to fight for a livable wage.
07:04To drive private equity out of housing and health care.
07:07To fight for affordable and accessible health care and prescription drugs for all Americans.
07:12Because I believe that health care is a human right.
07:19To make it so doctors decide care, not insurance companies.
07:23So people like my sister are never told again,
07:26Sorry, you can't get a PET scan.
07:28You don't have enough cancer yet.
07:30To fight for women's reproductive freedom.
07:32To fight for our public schools.
07:34Because I believe public money belongs in public schools.
07:54To address the cancer crisis that we're having in this state.
07:57The water quality crisis that we have in this state.
07:59Because every single Iowan deserves drinkable water.
08:02And to have billionaires pay their fair share.
08:05To fight for campaign finance reform and transparency.
08:10To fight to get dark money out of politics.
08:12Because we can have oligarchy or we can have democracy.
08:14But we cannot have both.
08:16And enough is enough.
08:21I'll be fighting for term limits.
08:23Banning members of Congress and their families from owning and trading stock.
08:26And I'll mandate that every single member of Congress.
08:29Holds at least one annual town hall.
08:31Because legislators should be accountable to their constituents.
08:37All of this is what I'm going to the United States Senate.
08:40To fight for all of you.
08:41Because I will be a senator for all Iowans.
08:44Whether you voted for me today or not.
08:46Whether you support me in November or not.
08:49I will fight for you.
08:51All of you.
08:52No matter what.
08:57I want to thank everyone that has supported me.
08:59All of you.
09:00To my wife.
09:02To my family.
09:04My friends.
09:06Thank you for the support.
09:07And thank you for all of believing in me.
09:10To my staff.
09:11To our volunteers.
09:13From the bottom of my heart.
09:14To each and every person that knocked a door.
09:17Made a phone call.
09:19Donated money.
09:20Put up a sign.
09:21And most importantly.
09:22Entrusted me with your vote.
09:24Genuinely.
09:26For 30 years.
09:28This state was represented by Tom Harkin.
09:30The father of the American with Disabilities Act.
09:36He was a true prairie populace that fought for the people of Iowa.
09:41This is our chance here in Iowa.
09:43To once again have a senator that is going to fight for the people.
09:46If you are tired of this rigged system.
09:49Only looking out for billionaires.
09:51And leaving the rest of us behind.
09:53Then join us.
09:54Whether you are a Republican.
09:55An independent.
09:56Or a Democrat.
09:58There is room here for you in our campaign.
10:01Together.
10:02We can win this race.
10:03And together.
10:04We can change this state.
10:06And change this country.
10:13My name is Josh Turek.
10:15And I am running to be your next United States Senator from Iowa.
10:18Join our campaign.
10:19And let's push for change here.
10:21We can change this state.
10:22And change this country.
10:39And change this country.
10:40And change this country.
10:41And change this country.
10:42And change this country.
10:45And change this country.
10:46And change this country.
10:47And change this country.
10:52And change this country.
10:54And change this country.
10:56And change this country.
10:56And change this country.
10:56And change this country.
10:56And change this country.
10:56And change this country.
10:57And change this country.
10:58And change this country.
11:00And change this country.
11:01And change this country.
11:03And change this country.
11:04And change this country.
11:07kind words and thank you to everyone who is here tonight let's give ourselves a huge round of applause
11:19i i am so grateful to be here with all of you i'm here because i love los angeles with
11:28all of my
11:29heart this is the most hopeful the most resilient the most complicated the most creative the most
11:37beautiful city in the entire world
11:43it is a city where people come to invent themselves and to reinvent themselves where they find the
11:49safety to be who they really are a city built by dreamers and immigrants and artists and workers
11:56from every corner of this beautiful world a few months ago this campaign was a long shot no one
12:04knew who i was i was the last to enter this race we had no institutional backing but what we
12:11did have
12:12was a vision for los angeles that this city should be affordable enough to still be a place of real
12:20opportunity where families are not pushed out where artists can afford to stay and make their art a place
12:27where working people can build a future that is the vision that we have for los angeles
12:42a vision where government actually functions and delivers every day on this city's beautiful big
12:52hearted values where we stand up against ice where we
13:02where we show up for our gay and trans siblings
13:09a vision a vision where our neighborhoods are safe where they're full of trees and shade and alive with activity
13:20and people and good food and community we had a beautiful vision a vision of los angeles that's joyful
13:30and welcoming and ambitious
13:36and we believe we believe that angelinos were hungry for that vision and we were right we were right look
13:43at all
13:47of you
13:48but here's the reality here's the reality that vision threatens some very powerful forces
13:55it does and they came at us with everything that they had the corporate landlords the city the city hall
14:05insiders the corporations who have spent years making sure city hall worked for them and not for the
14:14people these powerful interests spent millions of dollars against this little campaign
14:22spent millions trying to preserve this city's broken and unjust status quo and we said no
14:35and then and then came the maga machine
14:42they saw an opportunity in los angeles to buy a foothold in our beautiful city to advance a dark agenda
14:51they poured money in from all over the country they brought the right-wing media the political ecosystem
14:58to bear and attempted to infuse our city with hate with fear and with cruelty but we said no
15:09not not with billionaires or powerful corporations not with fear and with divisiveness but with something
15:17far more powerful we fought back with love and with hope and we fought back we fought back with all
15:26of you
15:32thousands thousands of you donated whatever you could and helped us unlock the largest matching
15:39funds hall for a primary in la history
15:45you you helped us shape plans and policies for what we can actually build in la together
15:52and then you knocked on doors in every corner of the city and told voters about those plans you you
16:00made
16:00phone calls after long days at work you hosted events in your living rooms and your backyards
16:06you stood outside grocery stores with clipboards you made your own incredible videos absolutely incredible
16:12did you guys see some of those incredible videos
16:16you talked to your friends your families your co-workers you found a hundred different ways
16:23to help this little campaign grow and to bring more people into this fight for a better la and it
16:30was so
16:31beautiful
16:37with every dollar every door knocked every hour volunteered you proved that our city and
16:44its future are not for sale
16:50and together we built something extraordinary and it gives me so much inspiration to be a part of it
16:59a movement powered not by cynicism or political insiders but by ordinary people who still believe los
17:07angeles is worth fighting for
17:15tonight tonight may not give us a final answer on this race many thousands of votes will be counted in
17:23the days ahead and we may not get an answer we like but regardless of what happens next nobody nobody
17:31can take
17:32away what all of us have built together
17:35what all of us have built together
17:40at a time at a time at a time when so many people have written los angeles off
17:46or have lost hope in the future of this incredible city you are proof that angelinos are hungry for change
17:54for a city that works for everyone a city that dreams bigger a city that believes in itself again
18:07there are so many people so many people who helped us get to this moment and i'm sorry you're gonna
18:12have
18:12to bear with me while i thank just a few of them to our campaigns leadership to ian our incredible
