00:1653 years of waiting a championship finally delivered and now the challenge of doing it
00:20all over again the new york knicks they are defending nba champions and while their title
00:25defense has gotten off to a little bit of a rocky start there's still plenty of reason to believe
00:29in the orange and blue so our next guest he knows all about the highs and lows of being a
00:35knicks fan
00:35you know him from his roles in entourage and power but he's also one of the biggest knicks fans
00:39in hollywood joining us courtesy of bet mgm the one and only actor jerry ferrar joins us now jerry
00:46what's going on man dexter i cannot believe we are sitting here today and you're in in your intro
00:53talking about the knicks or the champs this is not a day i thought was coming in at least 10
00:57years
00:58since i last spoke with you so yeah i'm very happy to be here i know man i know i
01:03think a lot of
01:03people are still even today you know as we are in november it's just still it's a little it's still
01:09a little shocking right still can't believe that it's actually real it's actually happened even
01:13though we're now into the season we've seen the banner grow up you were there on opening night
01:16so you know it's all that so let me ask you this jerry because you lived you know like me
01:23lived through
01:23the heartbreak in the 1999 finals against san antonio and then yeah i hear the sign and then
01:30before this finals you i saw i saw you i saw you out here you're talking a little trash to
01:35spurs fans
01:35before this year's finals so take me back to the moment when the knicks finally finished the job
01:40against san antonio what was your reaction and did you have any i told you so messages ready to send
01:46people so i i am a pretty optimistic knicks fan i would always get a lot of crap out there
01:53in the
01:54world people thinking i'm just trying to protect selfish selfish interests of like oh because could
01:59you get tickets to the knicks games you don't want to talk bad no i would i always talked realistic
02:04about the team but i mean it's so easy to be down on what the knicks were for years and
02:10years up
02:10to the last three or four years since brunson got here i tried my best to put a positive spin
02:15because if not what else are we watching each and every night i love watching basketball
02:20but with that optimism comes a lot of fear once things start going well like almost like this is
02:27going a little too well like this is too good to be true when is the other shoe gonna drop
02:32because
02:32that's usually what happened for the knicks so i on social media on twitter specifically which i only
02:37really use x for knicks talk i i talk a lot of trash a little bit but inside i am
02:42just a scared
02:43scared fan but this team with their resolve like you really couldn't ever bail on any situation
02:51they earned that right for you to sit through some bad play because you never knew when that switch was
02:56going to flip and we saw some of the most historic comebacks and playoff and finals history yeah it was
03:02just it's beautiful just even when i see the images still it's still so beautiful that we got to go
03:06through it and then for me with you one of my favorite stories from the next championship celebration we
03:11were just talking about this before we started recording was hearing your son who's he's seven
03:17right your son is seven and he was getting emotional and crying about the knicks winning and he's only
03:22seven so he hasn't seen the pain that you've seen that some other knicks fans have seen so somebody
03:28like yourself who's waited so long to experience the moment when the knicks won what did it mean to
03:33you to share that championship experience with your son and see that same love that he had for the
03:39knicks what did it mean for you to see that i'll say he he started peeking in what like two
03:43years
03:44ago uh when like the knicks played the sixers in that first round series one of the best first round
03:49series of all time he would like take a look but he didn't really care last year he was like
03:55starting
03:55to really become a big fan and that game one the halliburton game which i think we've exercised
04:00those demons that hit him so hard that he became a fan from that pain and then i started as
04:06a dad
04:07thinking why are you doing the same thing that was done to you to him why are you bringing him
04:12up
04:12in through all this knicks drama and pain but he really got invested after last year's series
04:17and dex i kid you not i don't force this on the kid obviously i watch a lot of hoops
04:22he always asks about it he's obsessed with cards and stats he could name you the he got the he
04:29came
04:29with me to the knicks banner night because my wife wanted to come but then his whole case was mom
04:35can't even name two other players on the sixers he made a sixers case and then he went deep he
04:41mentioned paul reid when talking about the nick the sixers starting five i'm like wow man you uh
04:47you you at least know what you're talking about even though paul reid's on the pistons now he was
04:51once no he was once a sixer so i gave him credit for that so uh yeah seeing his reaction
04:58though the
04:58cool thing about him breaking down in tears like that was it was the first time he ever had happy
05:03tears
05:04and he didn't know what was happening he just kept saying dad i'm crying and i don't know why
05:08because i'm not sad and i said son those are happy tears those are the tears that we like those
05:14are
05:14tears of joy so uh i'll remember that like years from now when i'm an old when i'm already old
05:20when
05:20i'm old and gray i'll just be talking about that moment with my son no that's it was a beautiful
05:26moment it reminds me if i was outside the garden before the banner night and i was talking to this
05:30father and his son and the son is nine years old and he i was interviewing him and he said
05:36i don't
05:36know why my dad had to wait this long he didn't understand the pain he's like why do you have
05:41to
05:41wait this long all this time but i'm like hey some knicks fans have been waiting a long time for
05:4653
05:46years but jerry speaking of that long time you were representing the knicks as a fan long before they
05:52were champions including during your years filming entourage so what's your favorite or craziest
05:58knicks memory from that time and did anybody on the entourage set ever get tired of hearing you
06:02talk about the knicks like they were like get out of here we don't want to hear about the knicks
06:05anymore did you ever experience well i do remember when we were shooting entourage like the pilot
06:11episode of entourage you know i had the uh bernard king jersey on i just remember thinking like this is
06:17awesome for me i hope people like i knew my friends back in new york would appreciate that um and
06:23then
06:23the coolest thing that really happened to me dex like a few years into entourage and how this whole
06:28like me going to knicks games even started was i shot a commercial that spike lee directed for like
06:35msg at the time and it was me and they were highlighting like the nate robinson david lee like
06:42those young rookie knicks that were going on so that's what got me in the building one of the coolest
06:47things though with the knicks that ever happened to me was i was shooting power and poor zingas
06:53went on i don't know what me i don't know what radio show he went on he went on some
06:56new york sports
06:57radio show and they asked him they said hey chris taps any celebrity you could meet in celebrity row
07:03who would it be and he says jerry ferrara wow dude my phone blew up and people from the knicks
07:09reach
07:09that night they had me courtside meeting poor zingas for the first time and i i'm i i tell you
07:16this
07:16because i'm like the younger version of me would never fathom that this was possible and outside
07:22of like financial security and reaching some of my dreams it's the best thing that's happened to my
07:27because of my acting career besides the financial security and yes lifelong dream the knicks stuff
07:33was the best thing that ever came from my acting career for sure that is that is really dope that
07:38they made that happen that the next game that night i was on set and shout out to the power
07:44crew
07:44they got me out like we filmed my stuff and i was out by five o'clock and i was
07:48heading over to msg by
07:50six and i was on the floor pre-game hugging and shaking hands with poor zingas before tip-off
07:56that's insane day no that's a that's a that's a dope moment there so jerry as you know and fans
08:00all
08:01know here nick's finally in that 53 year championship drought now there's seven games into their title
08:06defense and they're sitting at three and four and most people say that doesn't feel like a championship
08:11start to this season but how much of a pass are you giving this team after what they accomplished
08:15last season or is the old knicks fan of you already starting to panic a little bit because you're three
08:19and four now you know i i want to be that shrewd i want to be that much of like
08:25uh this is unacceptable
08:26you just can't be they get a pass the only way the pass runs out is if we're in like
08:34early april
08:35and we're in like the play-in tournament if that's what if that's going on then it's going to be
08:41you know big problems in new york but no they get a pass you don't want to say like the
08:45regular season
08:46doesn't matter because it of course does but for so long we the knicks were the hunters and a three
08:53seed meant the world to knicks fans because that means we were in the playoffs and we had some home
08:58games to look forward to right it used to be just get in the playoffs at all costs then it
09:03became wow we
09:03can maybe get a top three or four seed great then it slowly kept escalating and now that this banner
09:09has been hung believe me it's not like well they don't have to win it this year who cares because
09:13that's never going to fly in new york but you certainly give them the time and space to work
09:19it out coming off the year and the summer that they came off of i am going to be very
09:23very patient
09:24as a fan and i encourage everybody else to be as well yeah i've been trying to do that some
09:29people are
09:29not patient at all whatsoever jerry i mean listen this is new york you understand
09:33that some people are just not going to be patient at all whatsoever but as we record this the knicks
09:37do have an opportunity to get to 500 on wednesday so maybe things could be a little bit better they
09:41host the bulls what do you want to see from the knicks in the next game that will make you
09:45feel
09:45you know a little bit better about where this team is headed so you know i i like that we
09:51you know
09:52won like a few ugly messy games and then we look very solid against the nets could have probably blown
09:57them out but the nets hung around i think that's always going to be a tougher matchup than the records
10:01were show uh and the bulls hung around the last time too so now i want to start seeing some
10:06uh take
10:07care of your business versus the teams that you should be and this is no disrespect to the book to
10:10the bulls so many young players shout outs madis bazilas that's my guy but like take care of business
10:17especially on your home floor take care of business don't make this like a like all right we're up four
10:25with three to go no no no this has got to be a no sweat game take care of your
10:28business don't play with
10:29your food that that that's exactly don't play with your food all right jay i got it before i get
10:33you
10:34out of here i have a couple things i want to talk to you about too about what you're doing
10:36right now
10:37but i do got to get a bold prediction from you because as you said we know what this next
10:41team
10:41is capable of when everything clicks we saw it this past spring when we get to the playoffs next
10:46spring and yes i'm saying that i assume the knicks will be in the playoffs not in the playing
10:49tournament as you kind of brought it before do you expect new york to be right back in the
10:53championship conversation and who do you think is the player that'll be the biggest x factor
10:57and getting them there so look i i do expect them to be a part of the conversation i i
11:04do think
11:05you know the way the nba is now it i'm not saying they don't want to see repeat champions but
11:11the way
11:11the salary cap and the apron and all that stuff works like losing mitchell robinson is a prime example
11:17of making it harder for anyone to repeat and the thunder went through a similar thing uh look i know
11:24you mentioned i'm here in support of bet mgm and if you look on bet mgm right now i think
11:28the knicks
11:29are plus 1 000 to win the nba championship but i think they started off as plus 700 so they
11:36start
11:37off three and four and they knocked them back up to plus 1 000 so i think if you you
11:41know if you like to
11:42venture in a little wager i'm definitely gonna uh just put a little entertainment money on the knicks
11:48to win the championship i think that's the only way to go i think it's a good time to get
11:52it in but
11:53uh there's such a long long way to go and as we see even what happened with the thunder
11:57with injuries so uh but i do think that's a unique knicks talent is the health and durability of these
12:03guys so i fully expect them to be in a conversation i don't know if this is the team if
12:08we're doing a
12:09run back like you know leon rose always makes small but smart moves that like the jose alvarado
12:16move was brilliant when it happened um you know i but if this is the final form of the team
12:22you know i do think that obviously the stars will do what they do i do think it's those bench
12:28guys
12:28i think it's the alvarados the clarks and seeing tyler colick develop uh i'm curious to see what
12:33happens with the center minutes with drummond and all that and um but i think it's going to come down
12:38to that bench like do we get the landry sham at that shot 90 percent in the finals like if
12:43that
12:43happens we're a very big problem for a lot of teams yeah the bench who actually has been good to
12:48start the season landry sham is shooting yeah like over 45 from downtown so he hasn't been back i love
12:53the value gave there from bet mgm that plus 1000 so if you're looking for some value come on x
12:58fans
12:58you might want to hit that right now could you let the people know what you've been doing with
13:02that mgm because you've been doing some good work with them what's going on with that yeah it's been
13:06it's been about three years now since i've been working with bet mgm as an ambassador they have
13:10also done you know so right by me by supporting my sports media career whether it was with
13:16a previous podcast and throwbacks now that i have with matt liner they're out there on with
13:20sponsorship there and they have brought me to some unbelievable experiences they brought me to
13:26the super bowl where by the way my pick for that super bowl i was live tweeting for them was
13:31it was
13:31the niners uh chiefs and i predicted overtime now i'm not trying to say i'm some guru because i'm not
13:36but it was one of the coolest picks i ever had because that's only second time the super bowl went
13:40to
13:40overtime uh i had a shoot around and i played a game of horse at msg so they've a lot
13:44they've put me at
13:45all these amazing experiences and like i said you know i i always bet responsibly it's an
13:50entertainment thing for me but um you know i like that they have you know with the nba they have
13:56basically you know defense with injuries where you know if you lose a player in the first quarter
14:00you know because that happens a lot in the nba so i just think they're doing great things and
14:04like i said they've supported my sports media career uh to this point so uh bet mgm all the way
14:10for me
14:10dex all right now i doing some doing some good things there with them and you got to go to
14:14super
14:14bowl so that's you know super bowl yeah who's your who's your football team i'm a giants fan
14:23what's happening right now you you did you did not expect this at all that's what you're saying
14:29uh i was very optimistic to watch some football again the giants are sort of now where the knicks are
14:35not fully because they've won championship those two championships in the last you know 15 years
14:40have given us so much but this was the year where it's like okay maybe we could flirt with that
14:46six
14:46or seven seed that where the knicks were five years ago like let's get in there and then you know
14:51they're
14:51off to such a good start obviously the dart injury was devastating but now it's it's i kind of get
14:56to
14:56this like i don't want to don't celebrate now we got to pump the brakes i'm in pump the brakes
15:00mode
15:01understood understood all right last last thing before i let you go jerry um you know everybody
15:06we know you from entourage we know you from power uh you've been spending some more time writing and
15:10producing and doing some what's next for you in hollywood are there any projects any roles on the
15:15horizon that you're particularly excited about what's what's next for jerry farrar the thing i'm
15:19excited about most and um i i really don't want to do the thing where i can't say too much
15:25it's not
15:26because i can't say it because uh i'm not allowed it's also number one i don't want to jinx it
15:30and number two uh you know the deal is done but there's a few steps to go but i did
15:36just sell a
15:37show to hbo and all i'll say is it is in the sports world scripted series which obviously you
15:44know you know me now that's where my passion is so that that's one i have a lot of uh
15:49high hopes for
15:50and i've been putting in a lot of work on and then you know doing the podcast with lineart with
15:55throwbacks you know we just had tiffany amber theason one of both of our like childhood crushes so to
16:00speak uh that episode went bonkers um but you know we at we we this week we have cordell stewart
16:05coming on which uh that was one of my favorite players as a kid because i like that i like
16:10that
16:10yeah i didn't even know why he has a documentary coming out on hbo max yes which i have great
16:15yeah
16:15i didn't did you know why they called him slash um i believe there's a real reason like a specific
16:22reason i thought it was because uh his ability to play wide receiver and quarterback well i'll spoil
16:29some of the doc like bill cower said all right i'm not because like it was always he always wanted
16:33to be a quarterback he didn't want to play receiver and he's like all right i'm gonna keep you up
16:37i'm
16:37gonna put you as qb slash wide receiver slash running back hence the slash i mean that's how they say
16:45in
16:46the documentary so uh i got that episode dropping uh and yeah and his he describes that famous pass with
16:53colorado the you know the mirror the way he described he remembers every single facet of
16:58details of that play he's an unbelievable storyteller so can't wait to see hey i'm excited for what you
17:05got coming up man are you doing a lot of stuff for writing producing that the show that you sold
17:09to
17:09hbo wishing you a lot of blessings on that that sounds like it's going to be uh really good can't
17:13wait to see that as well too uh and continued success man on all the work you're doing and uh
17:18with
17:18that mgm but jerry i gotta thank you man thank you for joining me here on new york i can
17:22appreciate
17:23you man thanks anytime uh i'm a big fan of yours uh i know we've talked a couple before but
17:28anytime
17:29you ever need me put up the bat signal if you want to talk new york sports with somebody who's
17:33uh
17:34passionate to say the least i'm always there for you you do a great job thank you man i i
17:39appreciate
17:39that uh you know just just try to be good try to be great like you everybody that is jerry
17:44ferrara
17:44check out his work everywhere especially with their mgm you know he's excited about the knicks
17:49and he's ready to see if they can go back to back jerry thank you again man go knicks
17:55and thanks for watching new york got game boom shakalaka
17:59you
