Talarico celebrates 'underdog' victory as Democrats flip Texas Senate seat

Democrat James Talarico celebrated his historic victory in Texas's US Senate race on Tuesday, likening his defeat of Republican Ken Paxton to the biblical battle between David and Goliath.  "In this race, we went up against our own Goliaths. The richest man in the world, the most powerful man in the world, and the entire Washington DC establishment," he declared during a speech to supporters in Austin.  Talarico credited ordinary Texans with helping him overcome those odds, comparing his supporters to the weapon David used to defeat the giant.  "You were my slingshot. The people of Texas were my slingshot, and tonight we defeated Goliath," he told the crowd, before urging Americans to 'always bet on the underdog'.  Turning to the country's political divisions, Talarico argued that powerful interests had deliberately undermined America's economic and political systems, leaving citizens struggling and increasingly divided.  "There is something broken in America. Our economic system is broken. Our political system is broken. Even our relationships with each other feel broken. That's because the most powerful people in the world want it that way," he claimed.  Talarico's victory ends a Republican winning streak in Texas US Senate elections dating back to 1988, making him the first Democrat elected to represent the state in the chamber in over three decades.  The result also helped Democrats regain control of the Senate, with the party securing both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections.  Early figures put Talarico ahead of Paxton by 54.9 percent to 43.4 percent, although the vote count is still being updated at the time of publication.
