01:26From the American League West, it's the Angels. From the West, it's Oakland. They meet up here in this one.
01:33Ticket sales for this one have exceeded 43,000. Let's take a look at Anaheim's starter. Steve, what do you
01:40think the strategy is going to be today as he goes against Oakland?
01:43Not a very good matchup for this lefty on the mound right here as this lineup can powder some mediocre
01:48pitchers, so he really is going to have to move the ball.
01:51Here's the offensive lineup for the A's. Now, John, anyone in particular we should keep an eye on?
01:56Well, Howie Kendrick displays occasional power, but that's not his game. His game is to get on base, and he
02:02does that by getting a lot of hits. He's a better defender than what people gave him credit for. He
02:07can steal a base. He can be a game changer for your lineup.
02:11Yeah. Leading it off is Chris Young. Well, loss for the A's last night. They'd like to turn it around
02:18quickly here. Game two of this series against the Angels. This one's grounded near third. Foul.
02:23As you look back, probably an outing. They'd just as soon never see again.
02:28Yeah, they got down by nine runs. They just didn't give their offense a chance to win this game.
02:39And he catches the strike zone. That will be a called strike, and Chris Young is gone.
02:44A good sequence of pitches right there using location and selection to get the strikeout.
02:50Now we'll take a quick look at the Angels, how they'll be taking the field defensively.

02:57Well, in this day and age...

03:51And with two strikes on him, Brandon Moss now. He'll be protecting.
03:55Well, you talk about a big rip at such a slow pitch. Comes up empty.
03:59It's taken for a ball. Bottom just dropping out on the Morris pitch.
04:03Well, let's just see what he comes back with right there.

04:21Steve, as he gets into this Angels lineup, what's he looking at?

04:26And he's on. That's a nice way to jumpstart your offense.

04:32Now, the starting lineup. Mike Sosha's offense looks like this.
04:36In our scouting report, John, who are we watching for today?
04:40Well, every year you wait for Albert Pujols' numbers to diminish.
04:43But every year you look up and he's 30 and 100, batting over 300.
04:46And again, he's going to do it again this year because that's just the hitter he is.
04:51Pujols up now.
04:53And right now, top five in runs batted in in the lead.
05:18And that's another foul ball.
05:33The pitch.
05:35Pujols battling here as he fouls off another.
05:42That swung on. Hit on the ground.
05:44And he's up with it.
05:46Gets one at second.
05:47And they can't get two.
05:50Tried to get it to Moss. Not in time.
05:52Oh, that is a bad throw.
05:55Here's a look at the A's on defense.
05:58That defense is going to be critical in this game.
06:00They're going to have to make the routine play.
06:02And some of the spectacular plays as well against this very difficult lineup.

06:25Let's take a look.
06:26There is Hamilton.
06:28He's second.
06:29Third is Edwin Encadacion.
06:31Number one, Miguel Cabrera.
06:33Well, there's reasons why guys hit in certain spots in the batting order.
06:36Because the middle of the order guys will run producers.
06:39And that's what he is.
06:40One of the best in baseball last year.
06:42And he continues to drive in runs.
06:44That's why he hits where he is.
06:46And why he's such a vital part to this team's success.
06:49This one's towards Redick.
06:52Now it's two away.
06:55Well, let's take a look at the Angels and where they ended up last year rank-wise in the American
06:59League.
07:00First in batting average.
07:01Second best in base hits.
07:03And you see their ability to manufacture runs.
07:05And the fact that they were second in the league in stolen bases.
07:08Speed was a major part of advancing runners.
07:11Trumbo is ready to go.
07:13He stands in.
07:14He's number one in runs scored in the league.
07:17Line drive.
07:17That's foul towards first.
07:210-1.
07:22Cologne kicks and delivers.
07:24The left center.
07:25And that gets down.
07:27That should bring Pujols home.
07:29And Pujols will score.
07:33Well, sometimes you pay the price for a mistake pitch.
07:36That's what that one was there, guys.
07:37Right down the middle.
07:38Yeah, he just lined that thing.
07:40Lined it up when he saw it was right in the wheelhouse.
07:42Great job of hitting.
07:43And the next batter, Gary, will probably not see a pitch that easy to hit.

07:58Some production being seen in this game early.
08:01They've got a chance now to extend the lead.
08:04But you always want to be the team that jumps out early, guys.
08:06Especially when you can provide that valuable run support for your starter.

08:12This kind of start means a lot to a starter kind of approach where you can kind of think
08:16each at bat, do what you want to do, and not be overly worried.
08:19You know, don't be mistaken.
08:20It doesn't just affect the pitcher here.
08:22It also affects the opposing lineup.
08:24They know now they've got some ground they need to make up.
08:27Now a swing and a shot towards second.
08:30Oh, and that one eats him up.
08:32But he recovers in time.
08:34Makes the play.
08:35Good work.
08:36Early pressure being put on.

09:12Not much to complain about when the Angels played at home this past year.
09:16Very tough in Anaheim.
09:17They had a record of 46-35.
09:20And most years, that'd be good enough to get you into the postseason.

09:24And that's going to be a base hit for Reddick.
09:27But not so last season for the Angels.
09:30They got off to a slow start.
09:31Never able to make up the ground, Steve, last year.
09:34You know, they were a tough team at home.
09:35But when you add new players to your roster throughout the season,
09:38even if they're all-star caliber players like the Angels did,
09:40it takes time to make adjustments.
09:42And they just ran out of time.
09:44Gorgeous.
09:46And he gets over and grabs it with a lead.
09:50The season's still fresh.
09:51Here's what the Angels have coming up.
09:53They finish up this Oakland series tomorrow.
09:56They'll kick off a series with the Houston Astros.
09:59That's a division rivalry.
10:00That's Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
10:02After that, they meet up with Josh Willingham, part of that Twins lineup.
10:06Twins will not come easy over the next stretch of games.
10:11At the belt, Morris kicks and throws.
10:15Fouled off.
10:21And it's fouled off.
10:23Well, a nice defensive approach right there.
10:25A pitch down in the strike zone, below the knees,
10:28but he couldn't take that chance, and he just gets enough on it to foul it off.

10:43And let's take a look at how this game is going for Bob Melvin.

11:17They've counted on him a lot lately.
11:19He's picked up five hits in his last 12 at that.
11:21And they just can't seem to keep him off the bases.
11:24Seems like every time he comes up, he's finding his way on.
11:27Gary, you can look at it a couple ways.
11:29You can say, look, we've got the lead.
11:30Let's play for another big hit here.
11:32Or you can turn it on, put the pedal to the metal, and keep the offense going.
11:35I want to see him run.
11:37I think this is the time to get him going.
11:39It's Moss over there at first.
11:40He'll hold him in.
11:41And the pitch out.
11:42Nothing doing that time.
11:49This one's pretty well hit to deep left center.
11:52One down.
11:53And he'll go back to first.
11:56First, here's a look at what's coming up for the A's.
11:58They wrap up this Los Angeles series tomorrow.
12:02They'll come back home, and they will take on the Tigers and that great young player,
12:06Brennan Bosch.
12:07That series bound to be competitive.
12:09That's a three-game series.
12:11After that, they kick off a series with the Houston Astros.
12:14Little division rivalry.
12:15Team they beat in the previous series between the two.
12:18Home sweet home for a while here.
12:20They'll try to make the most of it.
12:21And we'll see Jordan now as he comes to the plate.
12:24What a wild ride in 2012.
12:27So many big moments for the A's.
12:29They ended up losing five to a very talented Detroit team.
12:33But a real good year for this young team and some great postseason experience.
12:42Boy, they've opened the door.

12:53That's a really good pitch, Steve, on an 0-2 offering to keep that down and in.
12:57That's a perfect pitcher's pitch.
12:59At this point, you've got to tip your hat to the batter.

13:03Trout at the plate.
13:04There wasn't a whole lot Mike Trout could have asked for more in his rookie season.
13:08Well, rookie of the year, and it took the triple.
13:10That one's nailed by Trout.
13:15And a great catch.
13:17Runners on the move.
13:22Look at the teams who led the league in slugging last year.
13:25Number one, the Yankees.
13:27Second, the Rangers.
13:28The Angels third.
13:30The Tigers fourth.
13:31And at number five on the list, the White Sox.
13:34Well, anybody can be pitched to.
13:36The problem is with this team, one of the top slugging percentage teams in the league last year,
13:41is when you make a mistake, they seem to end up for extra bases with this club.
13:45Everyone in this lineup has some sort of power, even if it's not home run power.
13:50Swing and a hot shot.
13:51And that gets down.
13:53Pujols picks up the base hit.
13:59Fantastic chance here.
14:01Well, he swung it back well in the last game, getting two hits.
14:04And he seems to be continuing it in this one.
14:07Harris at the plate.
14:09And when you've got the bases loaded like this, this is the opportunity you look for in a game.
14:13It may not come again.
14:14Well, when you have a lead, you want to keep adding to it.
14:16A big opportunity here to spread the margin.
14:18And a great catch by Cespedes.
14:22So they pick up two hits in the inning, but leave the bases loaded.
14:26And the...
14:28And we've got Rosales at the plate.
14:35Good pitch from Morris.
14:36Swung on and missed.
14:37Well, he has an outstanding changeup, Gary.
14:40That pitch that keeps the hitters off balance at the plate.
14:46Hit sharply down the line.
14:50And so Rosales isn't out.
14:53You know, what also makes this changeup effective is not just the change in velocity, Gary,
14:57but it's the movement, the sinking action he gets on the ball.
15:01One out, and Chris Young is at the plate.
15:03Not looking at his last time to the plate.
15:06It's taken four a ball.
15:07Bottom just dropping out on the Morris pitch.
15:10And that pitch right there just sets him up to go about whatever he wants right now.
15:14He can go down again in the zone, or he can run something up in the zone.
15:18Let's see where he goes.

15:27And Trout.
15:30As he hauls it in.

17:14And they'll have to eat this as that will go as an infield single.
17:17That will bring Chris Iannetta to the plate.
17:20For Trumbo, he was able to improve a little in how often he made contact.
17:23But with a 3.17 on base percentage, there are still going to be questions of whether he'll be able
17:28to sustain the power numbers.
17:30You know, he does strike out a lot, but I believe he's going to figure it out.
17:33He hit the ball harder than any player I've ever seen hit the ball ever last year.
17:39This guy can hit rockets by people.
17:450 and 1.
17:46Cologne kicks and delivers.
17:48The left center.
17:49And that'll put Iannetta on first.
17:54That sets up an opportunity for Eric Ibar.
17:57He tried to go down with that 0-1 pitch, but it gets blasted right back for the base hit.
18:03But the way he went after that in the box, Steve, it looked like he might have been guessing down
18:06there.
18:07Well, I'll tell you what.
18:08You have to make contact behind in the count.
18:09He got a pitch over the heart of the plate and took advantage of it.
18:13And he's in the top ten in the league and runs.
18:19Runners on first and second with one out.
18:21Starts him out here.
18:22And Cologne's pitch looked at for a strike 0 and 1.
18:26Oh, he's having some kind of season this year, Gary.
18:28Really the guy leading this team's offense in some kind of offensive production.

20:24Well, he waited for that one to get deep in the zone.
20:26And he put a good swing on it.

21:12Let's take a look at last year's rankings and see how the Oakland Athletics fared.

21:21And they were in the top ten in home runs.
21:23That ability to drive the ball really paid dividends for this team's offense.

23:12set up to go there but a defensive swing keeps this at bat going and that is in there the

23:19on base good offensive chance here and maybe he wanted to waste that pitch it just didn't get
23:26far enough away or up high well just it was still caught a little too much of the plate and
23:30the
23:30batter took advantage of it good focus at the plate now we've got qataris batting over nine at bats last
23:38year he had only one hit off the angels here at angel stadium in anaheim
23:48and the first pitch gets away from him
23:55so they are unable to make the play but gary's to make the error right there you just don't want
24:00to do
24:01that it's just not good baseball now morris with a 1-0 delivery swing shoots this one towards the gap
24:10right center gorgeous he comes up with a beautiful catch they get two men in scoring position couple
24:17of hits can't get them home though the angels still out in front we've got the top of the order

24:35and leading it off is mike trout now coming off a good ball game last night picking up two hits

24:40that one alone gets him to swing and miss for a strike steve let's take a look at what he's

24:46down out there on the mound well he's putting these infielders to work gary getting a lot of help from
24:50his friends back there pitch the contact let him put it in play and throw strikes
24:56here's the pitch back up the middle and it gets down that's hit number two making good contact
25:04saw elbert plujols comes up now but for mike trout let's check out his numbers and his stats from last
25:10season first in stolen bases second batting average and he was ranked third in triples really showing that
25:18ability to drive the ball down the lines and in the gap and that thought coming out of the batter's
25:22box
25:23i'm going to end up on third base he's singled in his last at bat swung on by pool hope
25:29strike one
25:30this will be his third time to the plate he's got one hit up cologne well you know what this
25:35one's pretty
25:35well hit to deep left center
25:39that's gonna one hop off the wall
25:44he'll hold there at second base credited with a double
25:50well this is a guy right here that was made to hit fastballs and that's what he looks for
25:55and that's what he got right there put a good swing on it he knew what to do with it

26:00harris at the plate last time up flew up 0 and 1 cologne kicks and delivers towards center field
26:09and a great catch runners on the move
26:14he throws trout comes into score not a good throw
26:20but gary get a chance to look at this double play in the replay and this is an outstanding effort

26:25make the catch get to the bag and make the throw that's a rally kill and that's going to deny

26:30chance at a big inning here hamilton at the plate so with this offensive thrust they extend the lead
26:37and that one swung on hit in the air deep to left field this one's towards reddick and that one's

26:48up and we've got rosalas at the plate
26:59now let's take a look at a breakdown of how this guy has been mixing up his pitches so far
27:03in this
27:03one what stands out guys well so far in this one he's gone to that curve more so than he
27:09usually
27:09does with that pitch you know john you're right the pitch i'd like to see him utilize more is the
27:13two-seam fastball get some movement on it and try to get it off the center of the bat scott

27:27going to be pitching they've decided it was time to make a change here a little warm-up action going
27:32in the bullpen that's a right-hander up and throwing well they're going to wait for the right-handed hit
27:36on deck to get announced and then they'll probably make the move to the pen

27:54and the throws in time at first mercy what a play you knew we were going to say
28:00hut corner on this place there's no question about it you've got to be scared sometimes down there with
28:05the way the ball gets on you great reactions and then the accurate throw from his knee one out and
