You'd never guess Stevie was born without developed eyes watching her play. When Carmen found Stevie near a pool, she had no idea the tiny kitten had been born with undeveloped eyes. Dodo editor Brielle talked with Carmen about how Stevie settled into her new home and became a playful, energetic cat who loves wrestling and running on her exercise wheel.

00:00We went to the pool, me and my friends, and as we're laying down our towels, we see little Stevie.
00:05Walk me through like just that initial moment when you first saw Stevie.
00:09She was so, so tiny. I'm trying to get her. She just bolted.
00:13She eventually managed to hide in thick bushes.
00:16Some of the hotel guests also came to help me. Managed to grab her.
00:21Put her in a box and took her straight to the vet.
00:24A specialist vet confirmed that she was just born in such a way that her eyes never actually developed.
00:30They were completely removed, stitched up because she kept getting recurring infections.
00:36When we thought, okay, the eyes were salted, she started developing really severe swollen mammary glands.
00:43I've seen a lot of things, but I have never seen that. Is that like a pretty lethal kind of
00:48condition?
00:49If we didn't take immediate action, yeah, she probably would have died.
00:54She wasn't the healthiest kitten, but now it's about seven, eight months. She's thriving.
01:01That must have been a little bit grueling for a while, but I mean, all the worth it seeing how
01:06different her personality is now.
01:08I mean, that's like a whole different cat.
01:09She does not back off from a little squabble with her siblings.
01:13She's the only one. The one with no eyes is the one that gravitated towards the wheel.
01:18Of course, that's always how it is.
01:20Are you currently fostering Stevie?
01:22We immediately knew when we got her. She's staying. We just knew it.
01:27I hope Stevie can inspire people or encourage people at least to take a chance on the cats with determination,
01:34if you will,
01:35because they have so much to give.
01:37And the process of forming that bond with a cat that requires extra time to trust you,
01:43it really is just so rewarding.
01:45They're incredible.
01:55You
