00:00You wouldn't know it now, but this two-legged kitty is going to be the speediest in the house
00:04one day. The vet said through reflexes that she may be able to walk again. Her name is Gertie,
00:10submitted by Kendra, one of our favorite cat rescuer and fosterers, who has a soft spot for
00:15helping special needs cats. She was found on the side of the road, so they think that she was
00:20either hit by a car or thrown from a car. Everyone was worried she would have to be euthanized
00:25because she would have a slim chance at reaching a good quality of life. But this wasn't Kendra's
00:30first experience dealing with a cat whose odds were against them, and for that reason,
00:34she refused to give up on Gertie. We started her in rehab to do different kinds of exercises to
00:40regain her strength. I was doing a lot of rehab with her at home on a daily basis, morning and
00:47night.
00:48Her tail started moving, and we see her getting stronger and being able to lift herself up.
00:57Gertie had come a long way with her legs, but there was something else fueling her all along.
01:01Or should I say, someone else.
01:05You might remember this handsome little face from a previous Dodo video with Kendra about a
01:10resilient cat named Shay whose legs were practically deteriorating when he was found by a cat rescuer
01:15named Taz from the UAE. Kendra devoted herself to helping Shay recover from a double leg amputation,
01:21ultimately helping him heal and regain as much mobility as he could manage.
01:26Like Gertie, Shay doesn't let anything hold him back. In fact, he's taken on the role of Gertie's
01:31personal mentor and best friend in the house.
01:35They will just collide and just rumble and tumble and play at each other. She was still able to follow
01:43along with him and see the things that he could do. We have a ramp here that takes us on
01:48the bed. Look,
01:48you can run up it. And then she follows him up it, or you can go down it. She wouldn't
01:54have had the
01:55same progress or confidence if she didn't have Shay to show her the way. And she's gotten a lot of
02:03movement back. She's speedy. She can run, she can climb. She's just showed us that she can
02:13live this amazing life and that it's not going to slow her down one little bit.
02:18I think that she'll, at some point, become a full-time member of the household. They're best friends.
02:24I want to continue to support that and encourage that.
