23 points.
02:50Так что мы говорим о том, что это было.
02:53Ну, вы знаете, вы должны проверить эти вещи.

03:2568 days on race day, we'll become the youngest world champion this sport has ever seen
03:30after he succeeded Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time champion.
03:34Mercedes and Lewis went off to Ferrari.
03:36Ted has been monitoring a rebuild down at Haas
03:40and a Ferrari engine that's been replaced at Oli Behrman's garage.
03:43And it's almost ready, so worry not about that.
03:46But I've actually made my way back up to the sharp end of the pit lane
03:49to see lots of people going out on the medium tyres.
03:51Lando Norris ahead of Kimi Antonelli,
03:54the ones who will be the last champion and the next champion.
03:58Although, Crofty, we should probably say that the rules are
04:01that nobody is actually crowned champion until the FIA Gala at the end of the year.
04:07This is a very good point.
04:08Just before Christmas.
04:09And I'm not quite sure where it is this year.
04:12I think it might even be in Paris.
04:14But in any case, while you look that up,
04:16it's not in Turkmenistan, that was last year.
04:18So I know that for a fact.
04:21While you look that up, I'll set the scene at Max Verstappen's garage.
04:26And high, high hopes.
04:27He is an expert round here.
04:29Red Bull have been finding speed left, right and centre.
04:33They think that Austin was a blip.
04:35Lots of things coming together to really compromise him.
04:38And that's interesting, going straight out on the soft tyre.
04:41So a mix of tyres we've got.
04:44We'll wait for Bernie Collins to fill us in on what she thinks is going on.
04:48But of course, it's his first session out.
04:51It was Ayumu Iwasa who was in the car,
04:54who showed good pace in this Red Bull Ford in free practice one.
04:58So for me, this is all, this early part,
05:01is seeing what Max has got in this Red Bull car.
05:05Good point, Ted.
05:06You said you wanted to go to Paris to the FIA end of the season gala, right?
05:09I had a hunch that it was in Paris, but it might not be.
05:12Two sets.
05:12No power steering.
05:13I think it's super heavy.
05:14Where's the final car?
05:15I'm not checking.
05:16Yeah, no assists.
05:18Yeah, that's going to need a trip back to the garage.
05:20We'll go out, and if it doesn't work, we'll just come straight back in.
05:24Yes, that will be very heavy.
05:25I wouldn't go to Paris, Ted.
05:27Unless you want to go to Charles de Gaulle Airport and get on a plane to Shanghai.
05:30Oh, China, right.
05:31Yes.
05:31Okay, nice.
05:33Saturday, December the 12th, it's in Shanghai.
05:35That'd be very nice indeed.
05:37You got your tugs?
05:40He's coming off to hire one.
05:42Yeah, exactly.
05:44I mean, he's quite mad, isn't it, to think Kimi Antonelli, at the age of 20, is about to achieve
05:52a life.
05:52Oh, life's ambition, I was going to say, but let's come back to that, because Oli Behrman, in that fresh
05:59power unit,
05:59pulled over, just coming out of the first sequence of corners.
06:03He's got it going again, so that's good news.
06:05Yeah, absolutely.
06:06I wonder if that was power unit related, or as we saw Esteban Ocon with some power steering related, did
06:13that affect Oli Behrman as well?
06:15We shall see what he's got going again, just looking to see where Esteban Ocon is on the track, and
06:22he's just coming in to the pits.
06:33Yeah, so let's have a look at Oli Behrman.
06:39So just cruising out of the pits, down to turn one.
06:48Oh, no, that's, uh, that was just a low, grumbling, grumbling.
06:55Did the power go completely?
06:57Well, it's not running, isn't it?
06:59Yeah.
07:02Well, here we go.
07:03Max Verstappen starting off on a set of soft tyres, as Ted said earlier, straight out the box, and Max
07:10wanting to get going and catch up on some of the lost time from earlier this morning, Crofty.
07:15Yeah, absolutely.
07:17A bit of smoke from the car in front.
07:19I think that was Valtteri Bottas in the Cadillac.
07:23Verstappen, not the fastest first sector so far.
07:29So as we watch Max Verstappen then around turn six, we welcome our viewers to Sky Sports' main event, to
07:36second practice here in Mexico City, alongside me in the commentary box, Karun Chandock and Bernie Collins, who's joined us
07:43now.
07:43Bernie, I see a mixture of colours on the tyre chart.
07:47Yeah, we always see a mixture, I think, at the beginning of FP2.
07:50It's surprising, actually, I think the most surprising one is a stop in there on the soft tyre, but having
07:54missed that run earlier in P1, I guess maybe they're going to run two softs in the session.
07:59Often, sometimes what we see as well is teams run it in the wrong order, as we would traditionally say,
08:05so soft second.
08:06Maybe he runs that first, and then he just gets into a long run on a medium or something later
08:09on.
08:10And how much were the teams, Bernie, thinking about the fact that, you know, they had a rookie driver in
08:14all, but Ferrari did.
08:16Would that alter the way they plan the usage of tyres through the weekend?
08:21Yeah, it does, because if there's any question mark, let's say teams are often trying to find out in the
08:26P2 session if a medium or a hard tyre is a race tyre.
08:29That's some of the information they're looking for, or if it's OK to start in the soft.
08:34Sometimes you sort of have to compromise and put one of those tyres in FP1.
08:38That compromise is easier on the rookie car, so if you want to get both drivers learning on the main
08:44tyre in P2.
08:45So, yes, you do set your tyre allocation, knowing that there's a rookie in a car.
08:49Also, other things potentially, like, you don't want to maybe make a big step between the hard and the soft.
08:54You want to make it as easy as possible.
08:56If you could avoid running the hard in P1, then that also helps, because that's the tyre that has the
09:02least grip on a track that also has low grip.
09:04But, I was talking to a couple of team principals today, and the message from them was, let's just dump
09:10the hard tyre, or one set of it, for FP1,
09:13because we don't necessarily think it's going to be useful until the race itself.
09:18And then we'll have all the data that we need on board now with Kimi Antonelli through the stadium sector.
09:23Charles Leclerc behind him has gone a little bit faster through the first sector.
09:29Antonelli drops in behind Isaac Hajar, a half a second between the two, and that's Charles Leclerc got on the
09:35curve a little bit there, but that was quite a snap.
09:38Yeah, they get a surge of power, so they go through that sequence of corners where there's a period where
09:43they don't actually have any of the electrical power.
09:46And then it kicks in as they're coming through that chicane, the left-hand part of it.
09:51On that occasion, Leclerc already had it out of shape with the previous right-hander, but then when he got
09:56the power, it gave him another big snap.
09:59Interestingly, on the hard tyre, Oscar Piastri has just gone fastest by three and a bit tenths.
10:06Ali Behrman, meanwhile, is back on the track.
10:10Software issue.
10:11They reprogrammed it.
10:12Computer did say no, and now isn't.
10:15So he's back out on the track.
10:17Hamilton, the mediums, now faster than Piastri.
10:20You know what one really good engineer said to me yesterday?
10:23Hello?
10:23If things don't work, they turn the computer off, go make a cup of tea, and come and turn it
10:28back on again.
10:29It all works.
10:29You know who the engineer was?
10:30She's put us in the concrete box.
10:32Well, I was trying desperately to get my laptop to work, but it is quite snappy out there, and you
10:36can see the wind has picked up on the pitley,
10:38and I wonder how much that adjustment is catching drivers out.
10:42You mentioned Piastri.
10:44Interested in the McLaren, then splitting those tyres, medium on Norris and hard on Piastri.
10:48So good learning for them for tomorrow.
10:50Piastri.
10:51Just watch this.
10:53What the f***?
10:54Am I just invisible?
10:56Yeah, that last sector is very tricky, Liam.
10:59Nothing for you about that.
11:00He just sat on the middle of the roof.
11:03Yes, Liam Wilson with a slightly more simplistic view.
11:07Sergio Perez, meanwhile, has been shown a black and white flag for this.
11:12Is there a gap?
11:13Is there a gap?
11:15Well, there was a gap.
11:16Whether he should have driven into it or not is a moot point.
11:19He did, and he's been told if you do that again, you're in trouble.
11:23So that's basically because the race director's notes have got these two lanes here, the fast lane,
11:28and then what they're calling an inner lane, not quite the slow-working lane that we have.
11:32And the race directors don't say you need to blend as soon as possible into the fast lane.
11:37And it says, in practice and qualifying sessions going along, the inner lane will not be considered blending as soon
11:43as possible into the fast lane.
11:45So I think they were expecting him to sort of not go down that inner lane in any distance to
11:49blend in quicker.
11:50Talking of things that need clearing up, you may have read this week in one press release
11:56that the track has been resurfaced between turn 16 and turn 1, and between turn 7 and turn 16.
12:04It's been resurfaced between turn 11 and turn 1.
12:08I've had that clarified by the FIA.
12:13Slightly wrong press release went out, and I won't say by whom.
12:17I'll head down to Ted instead.
12:19Where, I'm sorry to say, the ghosts in the machine have now stretched from Lance Stroll and Ollie Bearman to
12:26Gabriel Bortoletto.
12:27It's proper Halloween, this is there.
12:28Let's take a look at this.
12:30It looks like some part of, I think it's the battery and the cooling is leaking all over the garage,
12:39the pit lane floor.
12:41They're wheeling it off to the back of the garage.
12:44So there's certainly one leak.
12:46There might even be two, but you can see some mechanics underneath the car with the high voltage precautions on
12:53there as well.
12:54So I think there's a general leak in the car.
12:57I do think it's ERS-related, energy recovery system-related.
13:01But then they seem to be working on other bits of the car with some hydraulic lines as well.
13:05Anyway, sum total, Gabriel Bortoletto is not doing any practice two anytime soon.
13:10I'll keep updating.
13:11I was about to say, that might be him for the session.
13:14Sadly, for the man who came 10th there last year, the fifth and final points finish of his rookie season,
13:21and who comes to this race on the back of an 80-place grid penalty in Austin because of power
13:27unit changes.
13:28Just the 50 for Valtteri Bottas, the only one to take engine penalties so far this weekend.
13:34Ferrari 1 and 2, then, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, a half a second between the pair of them.
13:40This medium tyre seems to be holding up pretty well.
13:44I wonder, just wonder if...
13:47Thanks for that, Tim.
13:48Thank you, Ted.
13:49And I just wonder if some of the teams might consider that to be a very good Q1 tyre.
13:54You know, those at the sharp end as Oscar Piastri locks up into Turn 1 again.
13:58But this is what we saw them struggling with in FB1, wasn't it?
14:01Let's see if Lando does the same.
14:03But both McLarens in FB1 and he absolutely does the same.
14:08It was Leonardo Fornaroli in this car.
14:10Yeah, I gave my...
14:12That's...
14:13Yeah, I think we can insert any form of word into that and get the same sort of sentiment.
14:20He's expressing there.
14:21So, there's some issue McLaren have got in terms of trying to get the braking system,
14:29the electronic brake system, to work with the energy harvesting systems as well.
14:33And they're not in a happy place.
14:35Piastri obviously, you know, done a time, third fastest and all is fourth,
14:39but Leclerc has just raised the bar on a set of mediums there.
14:44He certainly has.
14:45So we've got Oscar Piastri on the left-hand side of your screen,
14:48making his way round Mansell Corner.
14:51What's the parallel tarda?
14:53Probably in your mind it still is, but it's now been named after Nigel Mansell.
14:56Isaac Hajar, who's currently seventh fastest,
14:59Kimi Antonelli goes third quickest with the fastest middle sector so far.
15:03Track is going to keep evolving.
15:05As the track temperature comes down a little,
15:08these are the same...
15:10Well, this is the same time that qualifying is going to take place tomorrow,
15:13which makes it a very important session.
15:16Yeah, it doesn't...
15:17Well, the thing that interests me there, actually, Croft,
15:19is you're talking as Piastri jumping to P3 on that hard tyre.
15:22So he's done several laps on that hard tyre now,
15:24and that just goes to show that the degradation,
15:26so how much lap tyre in the hard tyre is losing lap on lap,
15:30is less than the track improvement.
15:32So it's easy to be able to pick up the track improvement
15:34as he continues to do laps on that hard tyre,
15:37which makes sense.
15:38Fernando Alonso was impressive in FB1, Croft, he wasn't,
15:41he was up in seventh place.
15:43I know he didn't have all of the race drivers in it.
15:47So we'll see how the rest of this lap unfolds for him,
15:5013th at the moment.
15:52Improvement in the first sector, not in the middle sector,
15:54as he charges up to the line and pops up into the top ten.
15:58He certainly impressed me.
16:01Fernando's got a bit of impressing and a bit of making up to do
16:04at the moment to some of his peers that he's racing around with,
16:08complaining about the driving standards towards the back of the grid.
16:11Does he, though?
16:12Because he's entitled to have an opinion,
16:14and if that's his opinion, that's his opinion.
16:17I did think something was on the track
16:19as we were riding on board with Fernando.
16:21I think they're going to have to clear that, aren't they?
16:23It's right on the edge of the racing line there.
16:25Yeah, that's a puncture hazard, isn't it?
16:27Yeah, exactly.
16:28They could throw a VSC, but they could pretty much spread around.
16:32I'm not sure a VSC would actually cover that.
16:35This might be a red flag.
16:38Is it right, though, to be complaining?
16:41As Lando Norris is...
16:44Max will stand down inside of Liam Lawson.
16:46Well, that is practice.
16:49Did Max get ahead, stay ahead, go ahead?
16:52Lawson's going to keep that one going.
16:54Now, suddenly, Max has got to leave the track,
16:56and that just got a bit unnecessary in the end, to be fair.
17:00Which session are we watching?
17:01Yeah.
17:03Well, Max is a bit irate,
17:04but if Liam Lawson's on a time lab,
17:07and I'm kind of assuming he was,
17:09he's got every right to be there,
17:10and that's where that day breeze come from.
17:13Wow, I mean, just remind me,
17:16they both are the same stable, aren't they?
17:18There were teammates for three races this year.
17:21It's...
17:22Yeah, we saw this in Austin, didn't we?
17:24Leclerc and Russell getting overly feisty in free practice.
17:27We've seen a few of these,
17:29I feel in recent races,
17:31there is a red flag you predicted
17:33to clear up the debris.
17:35But, yeah, it's just...
17:36I mean, you tell me, Bernie,
17:38you're sitting on the wall.
17:40The car's broken, mate.
17:41It's not working properly.
17:43It's totally broken.
17:45Right, so there was an urge issue on that car in FP1.
17:50It's been broken a lot this year, sadly, for Lance Stroll.
17:5312 DNFs for him,
17:55most of which have been,
17:57the vast majority of which have been,
17:58mechanical DNFs as well.
18:00Look, we've got a red flag
18:01because there's debris on the track.
18:02Just to go back to why there's debris on the track,
18:04that just looked completely unnecessary in the end.
18:07I get Max diving down the inside,
18:08but then when he doesn't get ahead,
18:10just back off.
18:11You know, if they're both on a time lap,
18:13one's on different tyres,
18:14different, you know, speeds,
18:17you're just asking for trouble,
18:18and that's what it got.
18:20By the way, Max is currently sixth fastest.
18:23Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton,
18:24one and two, on the medium tyre.
18:26Piastro on the hard tyre, third fastest,
18:28and Antonelli and Norris on the mediums
18:30complete the top five.
18:40Right, green light at the end of the pit lane.
18:42The red flag period has finished,
18:44and this is why we had the red flag.
18:47Liam Lawson on the inside,
18:48Max Verstappen on the outside,
18:50and they're going to tangle,
18:51and they do.
19:09So they did tangle.
19:12Max went off the track,
19:14came back on into the path
19:16of the racing balls.
19:17There's damage on the left-hand barge board,
19:20and a new front wing has been put on the racing balls
19:26of Liam Lawson.
19:2941 minutes to go in this session,
19:31and let's see if we can carry on
19:33without any more red flags.
19:34Yeah, and we're getting Lando Norris out
19:36on a brand new set of soft tyres,
19:39so it's kind of...
19:40That red flag's come at not the worst time in the world
19:43where they've done the first try,
19:44and this is when typically drivers go into the pits
19:46and have a little bit of a chat
19:48about what the car's like
19:49before they do their qualifying runs
19:51somewhere in the next 15, 20 minutes
19:53normally we see them come out.
19:54So Lando, he's the first in the queue,
19:57I would say,
19:58apart from Verstappen,
19:59who started the session, of course,
20:00on the soft.
20:01There's your track dominance,
20:02Leclerc over Antonelli,
20:04and once again the Ferrari in the slow corners
20:07seems to have the advantage.
20:09Yeah, curiously though,
20:104, 5, 6, which are the...
20:12You know, it's a slower section than 1, 2, 3.
20:15The Mercedes is, on that graphic at least, quicker.
20:18And is that deployment from Antonelli
20:20in the way maybe he's keeping his revs up
20:22a little bit higher?
20:22I don't know.
20:23What I do know is he's about to go for a lap,
20:26but he's on the medium compound tyre.
20:28Would have preferred to see someone
20:30on the soft tyres,
20:31but either way, Karun,
20:32take it away.
20:33Yeah, with pleasure.
20:35As we see the long, long
20:37start-finish straight here.
20:38So the drivers tend to run out
20:41of electrical juice
20:43about 200 metres before
20:44they jump on the brakes.
20:45And it recharges the batteries
20:48so quickly.
20:48It's impressive
20:49the amount of regen they get.
20:51Now, from here on,
20:52they have got full deployment
20:53for this next straight up to turn four.
20:58Antonelli looking pretty good so far.
21:01Only 38,000 off Charles Leclerc's type,
21:04both on the medium tyre,
21:05but, of course, Leclerc's time
21:07done a bit earlier in the session.
21:09The Haas getting nicely out of the way there.
21:11That was Olly Baerman up at turn six.
21:13Now we get into the middle part of the lap
21:15where you're really threading
21:17the eye of the needle,
21:19the positioning you need to do
21:21in terms of the car placement
21:22on the kerbs,
21:23in terms of the line,
21:24in terms of the throttle application
21:26out of this one, turn 11,
21:27where you get a boost of power
21:29and you run down to that.
21:31And look at the sector type.
21:33Absolutely equal
21:34between the Mercedes and the Ferrari
21:36for the first three sectors.
21:37He has got traffic in front of him.
21:40That's Pierre Gasly's Alpine.
21:42And that is going to cause some disturbance
21:44and it's going to cost him time
21:45and performance,
21:47especially in that last corner.
21:48And we can see,
21:50as he comes up to the line,
21:51he does lose three tenths of a second,
21:53but it was pretty obvious
21:54that that was lost there from that car.
21:57Quite as out on the soft tyres
21:59comes Max Verstappen.
22:01That's not new soft.
22:02That's a used set of soft for him.
22:05So we've got, at the moment,
22:07Charles Leclerc Lewis Hamilton
22:08out on the soft tyre
22:09and Lando Norris on the soft,
22:11as we saw.
22:12Just looking at the sector times here,
22:15Leclerc making his way
22:17towards the first sector
22:18on his push lap.
22:20Here he comes.
22:21Maybe picking up a little toe
22:22behind Antonelli
22:23and slightly faster
22:25through the first sector,
22:26but not by a huge amount.
22:29What of Lewis Hamilton?
22:30Well, that looks a little bit snappy
22:31for Lewis coming out of turn three.
22:34His first sector time
22:35is a little bit slower still,
22:38but not by much.
22:39Just by a few 100s
22:41to his teammate,
22:43Charles Leclerc,
22:43who has that fastest
22:45of the first sectors so far.
22:47Leclerc continues on his way
22:48through the S's section.
22:51Takes a little bit of curb
22:52on the exit.
22:53Now you've got to pick
22:54your stopping point
22:55for turn 12.
22:56Leclerc in the middle sector
22:58has picked up a lot of time.
22:59This lap is not going to count.
23:01And like I said, Bernie,
23:02you've got to pick
23:03your stopping point.
23:04And maybe he was just carrying
23:05a little too much
23:06into turn 12.
23:07Yeah, you do.
23:07And as you were talking
23:08through that, Crofty,
23:09I've seen all that traffic
23:10in that stadium section.
23:11I think there was
23:12significant numbers of cars.
23:13I don't know how much
23:14that sort of caught him out
23:15as he was trying
23:16to choose that zone there.
23:17Because the walls
23:18being so tight there,
23:19you really do get affected
23:21by traffic,
23:21even quite a long way ahead.
23:23You see him waving
23:23in Checo there.
23:26Let's take our attention
23:28over to the reigning
23:29world champion at least
23:30for a few more days
23:32as Lando,
23:34that looked good
23:34through the 10-11 chicane.
23:36No snaps of oversteer
23:38as he came out of there.
23:39Only two tenths up,
23:40which is not as much
23:42as we would expect
23:44on this tyre.
23:45So to compare,
23:46Leclerc's first two sectors
23:48were an extra three tenths
23:49faster than what Lando's
23:51done on this lap.
23:52We know that Leclerc
23:53obviously didn't do
23:54the final sector.
23:55Let's say Norwich
23:56should go to the top
23:57of the times,
23:58but not by much
24:00compared to the medium tyre
24:01time from the Ferrari.
24:03Yeah, that medium tyre
24:04is holding up well.
24:05Lewis Hamilton
24:06on the 1.18.5
24:08at the end of his lap.
24:09And this,
24:10we saw him coming out
24:12of turn three
24:12and I said it
24:13at a bit of a snap.
24:14Took a lot of kerb there
24:16and there
24:16and had to correct it.
24:18Maybe it wasn't a snap,
24:19it was just taking
24:19a bit too much kerb.
24:20I think the kerb's
24:21really aggressive there.
24:22You've got that orange kerb
24:23to the inside
24:24which doesn't look
24:25at maybe on TV
24:26particularly from the
24:27on-board angle
24:27but that is a very
24:28steep curve
24:29and if you take that
24:30these cars don't really
24:32have the suspension
24:32didn't necessarily do
24:33but yeah,
24:34definitely that car
24:35on the inside
24:35on the right
24:36that has upset
24:37Charles Leclerc
24:38coming through that corner
24:39and he's lost
24:40significant time there.
24:41I could ask a stupid question
24:43to our tame racing driver
24:44in the commentary box.
24:45There's no such thing
24:45as a stupid question.
24:46Excellent.
24:47That's the standard answer
24:49and the right answer
24:50but was Checo disturbing him?
24:53Did he actually put his car
24:54in the right place?
24:55I'd say it was distraction.
24:57It was definitely
24:58a distraction
24:59I would have said.
25:00The problem is
25:01when you come around
25:02that corner
25:02it's blind
25:03so it's the unknowing
25:05you throw it
25:08into that corner
25:09in the hope
25:10that there's nobody
25:11in your way
25:11and if you've got
25:13that bit of doubt
25:14it slightly puts you off
25:16so yeah
25:17I could see why
25:18that was a bit
25:19of an issue for him.
25:21So Giampiero Lambezi
25:22is here
25:23this weekend.
25:24I would expect
25:26Tom Wood
25:27Tom Hart
25:28I should say
25:29to take over
25:30race engineer.
25:31Jude sees a
25:32Charles Leclerc
25:33massive lockup
25:34going into
25:35turn one.
25:37That is happening
25:38a lot
25:38and I wonder
25:39why that's happening
25:40so much today.
25:41I tell you what
25:42would be really good
25:43is if we had
25:44someone in the box
25:45who actually understood
25:46what it was like
25:46on the track today
25:47and had gone through
25:49that very corner himself
25:50look we can see
25:51the replay
25:51right now
25:52big lockup
25:53and with us
25:54in the commentary box
25:55from Mercedes
25:56Fred Vesti
25:56third fastest
25:58in FP1
25:59hello
25:59yeah how about that
26:00I was really happy
26:01with that
26:01did you lockup
26:02in the turn one?
26:03I actually didn't
26:04I had a few lockups
26:05in turn four
26:05and obviously
26:06with the thinner air
26:07here in Mexico
26:07it's actually really challenging
26:09and we're missing
26:10a little bit of
26:11downforce overall
26:12and I think
26:12just pushing the limits
26:14it's quite easy
26:14to overstep
26:15and also
26:17coming into turn one
26:18you're facing
26:18cold front tyres
26:20and so
26:21that can be a challenge
26:22is that the problem
26:23that the tyres
26:24because it's such a long straight
26:26the tyres cool down
26:27with the thinner air
26:28as well
26:29and then you've just
26:29not got the grip you want
26:30exactly
26:30so the track
26:32is quite short
26:33quite low energy track
26:34for the outlap
26:34so on the soft tyres
26:36you really gotta
26:37weave hard
26:37and get some lap
26:38if you have
26:39a bit of traffic
26:40your tyres are just not ready
26:42in turn one
26:42and that's most likely
26:43what would happen
26:44but you should be super happy
26:46that session
26:46just not only
26:47the fastest
26:48but only a tenth
26:49and a bit off
26:50or less than a tenth
26:50actually off
26:51of Kimi's time
26:52and I'm sure
26:53you're not going to tell us
26:53all the fuels
26:54and engine modes
26:55and stuff
26:55but that is exactly
26:57what the team want
26:58from a rookie driver
27:00isn't it?
27:00yeah I mean
27:01I'm so happy
27:02with that result
27:03obviously P3
27:04fastest rookie
27:05it's all amazing
27:06but the main thing
27:07was just having that
27:08trust from the team
27:10you know
27:10we are late in the season
27:12and we don't want
27:13any damaged cars
27:13but yet they trust me
27:15to put me on
27:16lower fuel
27:17soft tyres
27:18and actually go for it
27:19which is such a privilege
27:20I'd heard it was 80 kilos
27:21is that right?
27:22yeah exactly
27:24might not be
27:24I tried to go to 5 minutes
27:26it'll be 70 then
27:27and we'll find the right answer
27:29don't be worried about it
27:30it was a super
27:31super run for you
27:33there were a lot of rookies
27:35out there
27:35or two seconds
27:36and we need to stop the car
27:38we need to stop the car
27:39oh dear
27:40where is Lewis Hamilton
27:41on the track?
27:42he is currently
27:44he is currently
27:45on his way
27:46towards turn 4
27:48but he's stopped the car
27:49Lando Norris
27:50has just gone past
27:50and there
27:51you can see it
27:52by the side of the track
27:54so with the
27:55the wing mirrors flashing
27:57to let everyone know
27:58that a car is
27:59stationary
28:00that's new for
28:01for this year
28:02I wonder
28:03is this an ERS issue?
28:04is this an engine issue?
28:06what has happened
28:07to Lewis Hamilton's
28:08car?
28:09and we came into this weekend
28:11Fred didn't we
28:12thinking
28:12this is the biggest test
28:14that the power units
28:15the new power units
28:16have been put through
28:17this season so far
28:18yeah I mean driving the car
28:19it's hugely challenging
28:21with the boost pressure
28:22with the thin air air
28:23the PUs are not
28:25so easy to handle
28:27also brakes
28:28engine cooling
28:29you know
28:29we've already seen brakes
28:31smoking
28:31and I think we'll see that
28:33throughout the weekend
28:35so maybe if you can explain
28:36to people at home
28:38and to us
28:38in the company box
28:39what is
28:40what is different?
28:42what does it feel like
28:43different?
28:43because obviously
28:44you know
28:45we know
28:45the turbo's
28:46got to spin
28:47harder
28:47but what does it feel like
28:49for you in the cockpit?
28:50so basically
28:51when you're in optimal
28:53engine speed
28:54let's say
28:55everything is fine
28:55you've got
28:56all the power you need
28:57everything's happy
28:58if the
28:59turbo speed
29:00drops down
29:01that can be
29:02very challenging
29:03and then you have no power
29:04let's listen to this
29:05let's have a little listen
29:05through the stadium section
29:07there
29:11what way to go
29:12before it stops?
29:14something's wrong with it
29:15power
29:16understood
29:18we double check
29:19I lost all power
29:20from turn 13
29:21yes we saw
29:26now
29:27that sounds
29:28very much
29:29sorry Karun
29:30like Oli Behrman's issue
29:32at the start
29:33of this session
29:34which was a
29:35software reboot
29:36they're not going to get
29:36the chance to do that
29:37Ferrari
29:39yes and no
29:40I think
29:40because
29:41there are a number
29:42of things that could go wrong
29:44and
29:45if they thought
29:46they could do a software reboot
29:48they wouldn't have asked
29:49them to stop the car
29:49on track
29:50they would have got to
29:50come back to the pit
29:51so I think that's a bigger
29:52problem
29:53that they're concerned about
29:55and they don't want to
29:56lose another engine
29:57from the pool
29:57no
29:57but it would be an engine
29:59at this stage of the year
30:01are you doing free practice sessions
30:03with a race engine
30:04or were you doing free practice sessions
30:07with an engine that's
30:07from the pool
30:08and just liable
30:09it's actually a good question
30:10I actually don't know
30:11the answer to that question
30:12I would think we were
30:14running
30:14what would be running
30:15at the race
30:16but I am actually not sure
30:17do they tell you
30:18before you go out
30:19do Mercedes tell you
30:20it doesn't really interest me
30:21that much
30:22what PU I'm on
30:23I have a lot of other things
30:24to get right
30:25as long as it lasts
30:27right
30:27exactly
30:28yes
30:29I think there's a double whammy
30:30there Crofty
30:31because A
30:31there's the reliability
30:32concern
30:33B
30:34he's not getting the learning
30:36on the soft tile
30:37you know
30:37he's done one lap
30:38we saw it's a bit scrappy
30:39in sector one
30:40Leclerc is going to go again
30:42and there's a bit of track evolution
30:43but
30:44there's a double whammy
30:46for Lewis
30:46he's not going to get this information
30:48banked overnight
30:49in his brain
30:49as to what the car's like
30:51and
30:52and we saw in FP1
30:53you know
30:54he's
30:54he doesn't have
30:56a level of comfort
30:56of confidence
30:57they were testing different things
30:58on the front end of the car
30:59he's not happy
31:00with the aero performance
31:02he had in
31:02in Austin
31:03so
31:04I think this could be
31:05a crucial
31:06crucial issue
31:08there for Lewis
31:08meanwhile
31:09they've just brought
31:09a new floor
31:10into the Audi garage
31:11for Gabriel Bortoletto
31:12after the leak
31:13that Ted told us
31:14about earlier
31:15if they get him out
31:16they've done very
31:17very well
31:18on that respect
31:18and
31:19while we watch
31:20Charles Leclerc
31:20Fred
31:2110 rookies
31:22out there
31:22on the track
31:23today
31:23which
31:23he was one of the more
31:24experienced ones
31:25you know
31:25it wasn't your debut
31:26for instance
31:27you're all chasing seats
31:29out there
31:30and you're all trying to impress
31:31so do you all get to
31:32have a little chat
31:33beforehand
31:34or is it every driver
31:35for himself
31:36I mean
31:37you know
31:37we're all friends
31:38we've all grown up
31:39in the same path
31:40of F3
31:40F2
31:41so we know each other
31:42really well
31:43but I think these weekends
31:44are really crucial
31:44for each driver
31:46on their own
31:46obviously
31:48we all have the dream
31:49of being on the grid
31:50in F1
31:50very few reach that
31:52it's very hard
31:53to enter F1
31:54but these FP1 sessions
31:56are an amazing opportunity
31:57to really
31:58showcase your talent
32:00and what you can do
32:01but it really also depends
32:03if the team lets you
32:04I've been in FP1s before
32:05where I've had the error rig on
32:07and just on long run
32:08like try to gather as much
32:10info as possible
32:12where today
32:13I was having
32:15a nice run plan
32:16that was able to
32:17put me on the softs
32:18at the end
32:18and let me put a lap time
32:20so actually
32:21how does that work
32:22because
32:23I presume you get told
32:24by the team
32:25what the run plan is
32:26but you sit there
32:27sort of going
32:27come on
32:28I mean just sort of praying
32:29when the run plan comes out
32:30in the morning meeting
32:31that come on
32:32come on
32:32please please
32:33you know
32:34I mean
32:35I think it comes with trust
32:36as well
32:37when you're a new rookie
32:38the team
32:39they probably put you on
32:40a bit of a worse run plan
32:41a safer up run plan
32:43let's say
32:44I've been with the team
32:45for a long time now
32:45they know what I can do
32:46in the car
32:47and I think they
32:48they were happy for me
32:49to explore the limit
32:50and obviously
32:51with our new upgrade
32:52from Malaysia
32:53we still need knowledge
32:54so we can't just
32:55waste an FP1
32:56therefore it's really important
32:57I go out
32:58and actually push the limits
32:59and then by shove
33:00an early birthday present
33:01is that today?
33:02no Sunday
33:03oh Sunday
33:04thank you for reminding me
33:04he's 53 on Sunday
33:06your chief race engineer
33:07still young
33:07you want more fast laps
33:08just go and get him
33:10a bottle of something
33:11from the local tequila store
33:13right
33:13and Colton Herter
33:15needed 24 laps
33:17for a super license point
33:18yeah
33:18which is what we all thought
33:21not quite
33:23so we think
33:23that because he's done 30
33:24he's now got
33:2540 points for a super license
33:27but
33:28he was 7th
33:30in the 2025 IndyCar standings
33:32he was level on points
33:33with Rosenquist
33:35but Rosenquist finishes ahead
33:37because he's got more
33:38second places
33:38so they've actually
33:40gone back
33:40and had a look
33:41at that table
33:41and it turns out
33:42he wasn't 6th
33:44he wasn't 6th
33:45he was 7th
33:46so as a result
33:47the FIA have confirmed
33:48that Colton Herter
33:49needs another
33:50100 kilometers
33:51of practice time
33:54to get that extra
33:55super license point
33:56and I'm just pointing that out
33:58to you Fred Vesti
33:59because obviously
33:59you know you work with Cadillac
34:00don't you
34:01in IMSA
34:02and there have been
34:04a few rumors
34:04obviously
34:05that you could be up for a seat
34:07if Valtteri steps down
34:08so we'll get an instant reaction
34:10from you
34:11that might be good
34:12or might be you'll get it
34:13next week
34:13I don't know
34:14but it's a fascinating story
34:15it is
34:16it is
34:17I mean I'm hugely privileged
34:18to be working
34:19with two awesome manufacturers
34:22Mercedes and Cadillac
34:23obviously racing with them
34:24in sports cars
34:25they've had the chance
34:26for two years
34:26to see what I can do
34:27this year
34:28we were drivers champion
34:29team champions
34:31manufacturers champion
34:32in IMSA
34:32and I think that
34:33that really shows
34:34the level we're operating at
34:36but to have two manufacturers
34:38working together like that
34:39for a driver
34:39is very very special
34:41and very rare
34:41and there's no doubt
34:44I have all my eyes
34:45on that seat
34:46and it would be
34:49such a privilege
34:49to step into that
34:50because it's so hard
34:51isn't it
34:52ten rookies
34:53you all want to see
34:55there's one, two
34:56maybe three seats open
34:57probably only two
34:58and of those two
35:01we kind of think
35:02they've been earmarked
35:03well at least one of them
35:04has been earmarked anyway
35:05you could do with
35:06another team in F1
35:07to actually give you
35:07a bit of a better chance
35:09yeah I mean
35:10we said that before
35:10Cadillac joined
35:11and we're here again
35:12it will always be difficult
35:14I don't think there is
35:15any easy solution to it
35:17the supply of great
35:18talented drivers
35:19like yourself
35:20will always outnumber
35:21the number of seats going
35:22but
35:22there is one thing
35:24I would say
35:24and it's Kimi
35:25look at Kimi
35:26he has a chance
35:27of being world champion
35:27this weekend
35:28he's 20 years old
35:29he's a young guy
35:31showing F1
35:33what the young drivers
35:34can do
35:34and I think that should be
35:35also a pointer
35:36for the team principles
35:37to trust the young talent
35:39there is plenty of experience
35:41on the grid
35:41I think we need to trust
35:43the rookies more
35:44that that's
35:45yeah
35:46I'd give you the seat
35:47if I was Marcin Buzkowski
35:48absolutely
35:49I would give
35:50I would give Fred
35:51honestly I'm not just saying
35:52because you're here
35:53but I look at
35:54what Fred did
35:56in junior formula
35:57and what he's been doing
35:58here in F1
35:58the information
35:59he's going to have
36:01gathered by working
36:02with the top
36:02top team
36:03at Mercedes
36:03does it
36:04not the car
36:05but the systems
36:06the processes
36:07the operational side
36:08of how a top team
36:09would run
36:10that's why they've got
36:11Checo there
36:11so you know
36:13to me
36:15yeah
36:15I think you know
36:16you got Checo's
36:17re-sign now
36:18on a contact extension
36:19if you got your
36:20established
36:20experienced driver
36:22stick a hot shot
36:23in the second seat
36:24and one who's
36:25achieved a lot
36:26in junior formula
36:27fancy a name change
36:29not really
36:30what's on your mind
36:31well I'm thinking
36:32you're Checo Perez
36:33and if we had
36:34Chuck Vesti
36:35all right
36:36I can see that
36:36Checo and Chuck
36:37that would work
36:38for an American team
36:39and he could be Texan
36:40he could pass off
36:41as Texan
36:42yeah
36:42Chuck
36:44Chuck
36:44Chuck Tex Vesti
36:46can't say it
36:47but it sounds good
36:48I do think it's
36:49it's interesting
36:50because like this year
36:51obviously new regs
36:53W17
36:54been performing
36:55really well
36:55and in Formula 1
36:57we're always pushing
36:58the boundaries
36:58and I've been right
36:59at the forefront of that
37:00been the link
37:01between the racetrack
37:02and sort of development
37:03back in Brackley
37:04you've got a lot to tell
37:05oh that was close
37:06you've got a lot of information
37:08that you could
37:08you know
37:09I mean we've done a lot
37:10this year
37:10and I want to say
37:11we've done
37:11never before seen
37:13an F1 things
37:14which is very very cool
37:15and yeah
37:16privileged to be a part
37:17of that as well
37:18after some of the
37:19soft tyre runs
37:20Lando Norris
37:21by the way
37:21popped himself up
37:22the 10th behind
37:23Charles Leclerc
37:24Kimi Antonelli
37:252 tenths down
37:26Isaac Hadjar
37:274 tenths down
37:28just ahead of George Russell
37:29by a few hundredths
37:30and then Arvid Limblad
37:316th fastest
37:33another decent run
37:34there from Arvid Limblad
37:35George Russell
37:35on his latest lap
37:37so let's follow this
37:38lap through with George
37:40and it's great
37:41that we've got the battery
37:42on this now
37:43from here on
37:44onwards
37:44you should have
37:45more than enough battery
37:46I mean this track
37:46is pretty energy rich
37:47actually
37:48so there's
37:49no super clips
37:50it's flat out
37:51and you can certainly
37:52feel that when you're
37:53driving
37:53you have all the power
37:54you need
37:55we have a bit of
37:56oversteer here
37:57I felt that in FP1
37:59as well
37:59just sliding the rear
38:00a little bit
38:01in the high speed
38:02and last sector
38:03as usual
38:04we have the rear
38:06overheating
38:06and you're holding on
38:07to whatever lap time
38:09you've already made
38:09well George is only
38:10a couple of hundreds
38:11off
38:11into this last sector
38:13it's the shortest sector
38:15on the track
38:16but as you say
38:17the rears are
38:18absolutely crying
38:20for their life a bit
38:21George crosses the line
38:22and he's a tenth behind
38:24he's three milliseconds
38:25off Lando Norris
38:26that's encouraging
38:26that's a very good run
38:28from George Russell
38:29how many laps
38:30he's done on those tyres
38:31that'll be his second push
38:33on those tyres
38:34and I think that's good
38:35for George
38:35isn't it
38:35because again
38:36he's come off the back
38:37of a tough weekend
38:38in Austin
38:38where he was always
38:40a chunk behind Kimi
38:41and this is the thing
38:42with George
38:43isn't it
38:44it's been a frustrating
38:45season to watch
38:46and a confusing season
38:48to watch
38:48because last year
38:49probably remember
38:50the end of season show
38:51I'll try to review
38:52I rated George
38:53as the second best driver
38:54of 2025
38:55because of his consistency
38:57and he was unbelievably
38:59consistent
38:59and he's not had that
39:01this year
39:01and we're seeing
39:02these sort of ups
39:03and downs
39:04just very quickly
39:05Fred
39:06George has been talking
39:07about
39:08where his driving style
39:10might be getting affected
39:11by these new cars
39:12it's kind of mid
39:13to exit
39:14of a corner
39:15and he maybe needs
39:16to adapt a bit more
39:17because it's that
39:18kind of on the throttle
39:19bit mid to exit
39:20that's costing him
39:21at the moment
39:22yeah I mean it's hugely complicated
39:24first of all
39:25we can do as much
39:26same as we want
39:27but we can't have
39:28the perfect conditions
39:29and these cars
39:32can be challenging
39:33like in high speed
39:33if you suddenly nail the corner
39:35and you use
39:36a bit extra energy
39:38or you maybe harvest less
39:39then on just following straight
39:41you will be out of battery
39:42and then you actually
39:43get penalised
39:44for being fast
39:44and that can be
39:46quite confusing
39:47as a driver
39:47and I think
39:49that's some of the
39:50things that's happened
39:51during the year
39:51where George has really
39:52nailed the sector
39:53but then actually
39:54kind of got penalised
39:55exactly
39:56hare and tortoise
39:57hare and tortoise
39:58whatever happens
39:59thanks for coming up
40:00thank you so much
40:01good luck
