00:01One of these undiscovered fashion designers is about to go from rags to riches.
00:07And their winning fashions will go on sale in stores the very next day.
00:12Fashion Star, tonight after The Biggest Loser on NBC.
00:23Hi, this is Connie Wang with Refinery29, and today we're here with Christy Kurtz,
00:27our photo editor and resident DIY expert.
00:30The thing that we loved probably most from the Fall 2012 shows were these amazing hair accessories we saw at
00:35Rodarte,
00:36which were these celestial, star-studded thingamajigs of all the models we're wearing.
00:41And today we're going to be showing you how to make your very own.
00:43So for this project we won't need a ton of supplies.
00:46The first thing you'll need is two different sizes of star-shaped nail heads,
00:49some gold spray paint, jewelry pliers, wire cutters, a hair clip, and some thin and sturdy wire.
00:56To start the project you'll cut off a piece of wire, take your jewelry pliers, and make a small circle.
01:05Once you have your circle, you're going to take one of these star nail heads, put it in the center,
01:11and you're going to close each of these pointy things in the middle of the star on top of the
01:16wire to secure it.
01:17Can we proceed?
01:24Whoa, shooting stars.
01:28So we made seven of these shooting stars, but you can go as high of a number as you want,
01:32depending on how elaborate and gigantic you want your headpiece to be,
01:35but we wanted to keep ours a little bit minimal.
01:39After you have your stars made, now we're going to start assembling it.
01:42So we're going to take one of the larger star nail heads, and this is going to be part of
01:46the center of the hair piece.
01:47So you want to turn that upside down, and starting with one of the gold stars that you made,
01:56you're going to put a second loop.
02:04So any extra wire that you have coming from the loop, go ahead and just cut that off.
02:08And then set it inside the little spokes.
02:17You do different lengths of wire.
02:19So maybe this one I'll make a little further away.
02:25So once you have your cluster put together, we felt that three, actually three little stars,
02:29was just right for this particular cluster.
02:32You're going to want to close all of those little tabbies over all of the wires.
02:37It's a little bit tricky to do, but patience is key.
02:44Once you have all the center tabs down, you can start closing the outside tabs.
02:50So here is our first cluster.
02:52To make it bigger, we're going to start building off of that.
02:54So you take your other big star and attach it at some point.
02:59Close up that particular tab to secure it to the existing smaller star.
03:05And then you're going to want to do the same thing.
03:07Start building off more and more.
03:09And so it just creates this beautiful, splayed out, celestial night time set.
03:14Once you have the whole setup put together, all the stars wired together,
03:19it's time to attach it to a clip.
03:21So turn it upside down.
03:23Cut off two extra pieces of wire.
03:27Thread the wire underneath the loop of wire that's already attached.
03:32Just like so.
03:34These wires are what we're going to use to attach it to the clip.
03:38So open up the clip.
03:39Put this through one side.
03:42And this one through the other.
03:51So we're going to just twist them.
03:59Tuck this underneath because you don't want this to poke you in the head.
04:03So once you're finished assembling it, you can either, you know, finish and just wear it like this.
04:07But if you want it to be one uniform color, we're going to spray paint it.
04:11So to do this, you want to unclip it just so you don't accidentally spray paint the whole thing shut.
04:17Put it against a piece of newspaper or whatnot.
04:21You probably should do this outside.
04:28So this is the finished product.
04:29Your beautiful star hair piece.
04:32We're going to show you a couple of ways to wear it.
04:33But for now, isn't it pretty?
04:50Finally, you found a ring?
04:53Very nice.
