00:00I am very hesitant of change.
00:03This is something so out of my comfort zone.
00:06But at the same time, I'm pretty excited
00:08because I feel it's the one thing in my life
00:10I can actually control right now.
00:13I'm Shannon, and today I'm getting a dramatic cut
00:16and blonde balayage.
00:18I've got a lot of hair, I know.
00:20The last time I cut my hair was about a year ago.
00:23I'm pretty bad at keeping up with regular haircuts,
00:26and I've been pretty busy work-wise,
00:27and then COVID happened,
00:28and I have not had a chance to get to the salon until now.
00:34The last time I had my hair short, I was a little kid.
00:38Growing up, my hair always grew pretty slowly.
00:41So once I achieved the length that I was looking for,
00:45I decided to keep it that way for the past 10 years.
00:48In high school, I tried to be a little adventurous
00:51and dye it blonde, but that didn't last very long.
00:55My biggest concern with the length
00:57is that it still needs to be able to go into a bun
00:59on the top of my head.
01:00I am an orthopedic surgical PA,
01:02and it needs to be in a bun for the operating room
01:04multiple times a week.
01:06Today, I'm at Spoken Wheel Flat Iron.
01:08Hi Shan, how are you today?
01:09Good, how are you?
01:10Hi, I'm Alexandria Hyers.
01:11I'm a color specialist at Spoken Wheel Flat Iron.
01:14Today, we'll be doing a balayage on Shanay,
01:17which provides dimension at the top into more so
01:19of a solid blonde around her face.
01:22Hi, I'm Akeem, and I'll actually be doing a cut.
01:24Hi, my name is Akeem, and I work at Spoken Wheel Flat Iron.
01:26I'm a haircutter and a hair extension specialist.
01:29Do you like more so dimensions starting at the root,
01:32or more so like a little grown-out look?
01:34A little bit grown-out.
01:35Nice.
01:36And for your cut, what exactly are you thinking about doing?
01:38Something dramatic, but that it can still go into a bun,
01:41so probably about here.
01:42Okay.
01:43And are you wanting to add any face framing into your hair?
01:46Sure.
01:46Whatever you think looks good.
01:48Okay.
01:48I have a big fear of short hair.
01:51I think that I have a pretty round face,
01:53and I always felt that the shorter my hair was,
01:55the rounder my face would look.
01:56I am most excited about the big transformation,
01:59and I am most nervous that it won't fit into a bun.
02:02Being in the medical field during the pandemic
02:05has left me with little time for self-care,
02:09so I'm super excited about getting a much-needed haircut
02:12and trying something different.
02:13I think it will be really refreshing.
02:16How are you feeling?
02:17Okay.
02:17Okay.
02:22Feels so much later.
02:25Feels so much later.
02:25So she's going to take over from here,
02:27and then I'll go back in and tweak everything
02:28and finish makeup for you.
02:29You got it.
02:37One of the main reasons why I went to PA school
02:40was to be able to still help others
02:43and be in the medical field while achieving an ideal work
02:47life balance, which I definitely did have pre-COVID.
02:52I wanted to go with a balayage because I feel it's one of the lower maintenance color changes that you
02:59can do.
03:44I'm going to add a little face framing around her face and also add soft textured pieces
03:48to add movement into her hair.
03:52In terms of the length, I was inspired by my sister.
03:56She used to have very long hair, even longer than mine.
04:01And a couple years ago, she cut it to a shorter length and she just pulls it off so well.
04:05I'm hoping that I can do the same.
04:17All right, Shannon.
04:20I love it.
04:21Thank you so much.
04:23I've never had my hair this short and it's very different from anything I've ever had
04:28before.
04:29I like it a lot.
04:33I feel very refreshed after not having a haircut for over a year and I'm excited that I can
04:38still fit into a bun when I go back into the operating room.
