Transcript
00:00Our ability to go to the polls on November 6th will chart the course for the future of
00:05this country.
00:06It's about time that we had real leadership that will honestly stand up for the integrity
00:09of our community.
00:10Right now we're mortgaging our children's future.
00:12We should make it an even playing field so it's not just the haves that can actually
00:17be leaders in D.C. representing our voices.
00:20The 2018 midterm elections will have an enormous impact on American politics for years to come.
00:26Control of Congress hangs in the balance as all 435 members of the House of Representatives
00:32and one-third of the Senate are up for re-election.
00:36On November 6th, a record-breaking 278 women will be on the ballot for federal and state
00:41elections.
00:42I got a chance to hear a few of their stories.
00:45What motivated you to run for office this year?
00:482016 was a huge wake-up call.
00:50Women, young and old, woke up and said, never again.
00:53The vast majority of us are running because we have had enough of people not talking about
00:57the important issues.
00:58Our reproductive rights are still under attack.
01:00Climate change.
01:01Immigrant rights.
01:02Healthcare.
01:03Resources for our schools.
01:04We can't talk about education without talking about the economy.
01:07There's one side that says, the economy's doing great.
01:09It's wonderful.
01:09No, it's doing great for somebody that already had money to invest in the stock market.
01:13I felt this obligation to basically enlist in what I saw was a battle happening in Washington,
01:19D.C. over the values of our country.
01:22You're one of the record number of women running for office this year.
01:26How will you disrupt the political climate in Washington, D.C.?
01:30We know what needs to be done.
01:31We focus on it and we get it done.
01:33The conversation will change, but also this veil of what it means to be a politician will
01:39come down because a lot of people need to see people like them who are doing something
01:45because they feel that they have the confidence to do it.
01:47We're going to be the key to taking back the house.
01:50Changing the complexion, bringing women to the house, bringing diversity to the house,
01:55and taking back the majority of the house.
01:57If we're not making decisions for ourselves and for our families,
02:01then people who are not interested in protecting what's important to us,
02:05they're the ones who are going to be making those decisions.
02:08I think women are going to save this country.
02:10What impact do you hope to make?
02:12I think that my voice is valuable.
02:14My perspective is important.
02:15And maybe, just maybe, if we begin to approach these problems differently
02:20and have all voices at the table, that we can come up with real solutions.
02:24People need to see that there's a leadership out there that will purely reflect them.
02:28We have an opportunity to really fix this government for the better.
02:31One man said to me, will you be a part of decency in our government?
02:34And so I hope I'm always a part of that.
02:36There is so much at stake in this election.
02:39I think it's so critically important that young women across this country take advantage of the
02:45opportunity to vote.
02:46Whether you choose to vote by mail, whether you choose to vote early or vote on election day,
02:52make a plan to vote.
