00:00I'm Lucy Fink and this is 5 Days of No Sugar.
00:05The Sundance film Fed Up argues that sugar is the new cigarettes.
00:10What?
00:11Our generation was raised being told, don't smoke, cigarettes kill, but here's a jumbo
00:16pixie stick.
00:17Enjoy.
00:17I mean, I always knew it wasn't great for my teeth, but now I'm being told sugar's
00:21going to kill me?
00:22Many people in the world have successfully cut sugar out from their diets.
00:25Personally, I have a bit of a sweet tooth and I don't think I'd be able to stop by weaning
00:31off.
00:31I think if I'm going to stop, it's all or nothing.
00:33So starting right now, cutting out all sugar for 5 days.
00:38Let's do it.
00:42Day 2 and today I'm taking a step back to learn the difference between healthy sugars and dangerous
00:47sugars.
00:47The reason I'm doing this is because yesterday I was officially the world's pickiest eater.
00:52I examined every single bite of food.
00:55As it turns out, it's pretty impossible to cut out all sugar.
00:59So let's start with the basics that I learned from my research.
01:02Fructose versus sucrose.
01:05Fructose is a natural sugar that's found in fruits, vegetables, honeys, and whole foods.
01:10And sucrose, on the other hand, is the devil of sugars.
01:12Think candy bars, white processed sugar, chemicals added, and fruity drinks.
01:17I don't want to cut out all fruit this week because even though many fruits are high in
01:21fructose, fruit is still really good for you.
01:24It helps fight off other diseases, there's vitamins and minerals.
01:27Fruit is good.
01:27So instead, I'm going to just adjust my eating patterns to cut out all processed sugar.
01:32The glycemic index is how we measure a food's effect on our blood sugar levels.
01:36So this week, in addition to cutting out the processed sugars, I'm also going to replace
01:39high glycemic fruits and vegetables with lower ones.
01:42Normally, when I have oatmeal for breakfast, I rip open those packets and I think to myself,
01:46wow, I'm being so healthy, I'm making oatmeal for breakfast.
01:49Those packets are filled with sugar.
01:53So why not just make my own?
01:55Using 100% whole grain oats, we're reducing our blood sugar, yeah.
02:04I've been doing this for two days now and I'm really trying to hone in on how this experiment
02:08is affecting my body in different ways.
02:10My body is really sensitive to sugar and sometimes if I eat too much sugar after 6pm, I cannot
02:17fall asleep without a sleeping aid.
02:18But great news, for the past couple of nights, I've fallen asleep very easily.
02:22Same thing with energy levels.
02:24Normally, I eat a sugary snack around lunch time and then just before dinner, I crash.
02:28But this week, I haven't crashed.
02:30I've had a very steady energy level this whole week.
02:32I always have a moment in the middle of these videos, some point in the middle of the week,
02:36when I realize why I'm doing this and really what I'm learning.
02:39I think this week I'm realizing that sugar is not that necessary.
02:43And that's aggressive coming from someone like me who loves sugar and candy and snacks.
02:48I truly do.
02:50Fully diving into an experiment like this and actually just doing it is the only way to
02:54really show your body how you could be feeling.
02:59It's Thursday night.
03:00Today, I took my learnings out into the world, starting with the morning coffee.
03:04If this was last week, I would have had some sort of vanilla-flavored coffee, tons of pumps
03:09of sugar.
03:10That's about 15 grams of sugar on top of whatever sugary cereal I'm already having for breakfast.
03:15I don't really need to start my day with that type of sugar spike.
03:18So today, I went simple.
03:20An iced coffee, some unsweetened vanilla almond milk with a little drizzle of honey.
03:25Tonight, I went out to dinner with my friends and I sat there looking at the cocktail menu
03:29with my eyes completely glazed over.
03:32The ingredients there might as well have just been sugar, comma, sugar, comma, sugar served
03:38with ice cubes made from sugar on the rocks.
03:43Forget the alcohol you're consuming.
03:44Have you ever thought that maybe, just maybe, part of your hangover the next day is a subtle
03:50sugar crush?
03:51Just a thought.
03:53So tonight, here's what I ordered.
03:54Tequila with seltzer and fresh lemon juice.
03:58Until this week, I honestly didn't think too much about this.
04:00But there are so many little subtle things that I can change about my day-to-day routine
04:04to cut back on my sugar intake.
04:06And as a 23-year-old living in Manhattan, cocktails are definitely a good place to start.
04:12Happy Friday!
04:14Sugar-free.
04:15This week has totally changed my perception of sugar.
04:18I can't even look at food packages anymore without seeing mounds and mounds of white processed
04:22sugar.
04:23We need to be clear here.
04:24I'm not dieting.
04:25This is not a strict eating regimen.
04:27I'm actually just paying more attention to what I'm putting in my body.
04:31I'm trying to live a longer life, folks.
04:33You think you're starting off your day with an iced coffee.
04:36But with the amount of sugar in there, it's sort of like you're starting off the day with
04:39a tiny donut.
04:40Have you ever tried any of my five-day challenges?
04:42I'm dying to know.
04:44And if you have any ideas, as always, please write below.
