Refinery29 puts Sarah Potempa's Beachwaver curling iron to the test. Watch and see if this rotating curling iron passes or fails our Beauty Test Lab.
Transcript
00:05Hi, I'm Connie Wang, the global editor of Refinery29, and today we're going to be doing a beauty test lab.
00:11And we're going to be trying out the beach waver by Sara Patempa.
00:14We already taught you how to use a curling iron in one of our videos,
00:17but this is supposed to make curling your hair and getting that really nice glamour, beachy, wavy thing completely foolproof.
00:24So we'll try it out.
00:27So it looks like a normal curling iron.
00:30It's got the little clippy thing here and the heat rod, obviously,
00:34but it has these cool little features that makes curling your hair really easy to do.
00:40So the first thing you'll notice is that it has a big go button, and that actually turns the heat
00:46barrel on its own.
00:48So I'm going to show you how to do this turning it on first, and once you press it, it
00:55just spins like that.
00:56And the second thing you'll notice is that it has a left and a right button, and that you press
01:01the button depending on which side of the head you're curling on.
01:04And it has heat settings down here, but I'm not going to futz with it. It's at 390 degrees.
01:10So I'm going to let it heat up, and it doesn't take very long. I think it only takes a
01:14couple of minutes.
01:15I think it's hot now, though.
01:17So the first thing you're going to want to do is put your hair up in sections.
01:20You can either use those fancy alligator clips, or if you're like me, just do one of those crazy top
01:26knots.
01:28I'm going to be doing the left side of my hair first, so push the L button.
01:34And Sarah says to make sure that you're clipping your hair with the clip facing you.
01:44It took me a little bit to understand what that meant, but it basically means that if you're clipping your
01:48hair and is rotating a certain way,
01:50that you don't want to fold over your hair once it's clipped.
01:54So for the hair on your left side, you're going to be wanting to spin out this way, and for
01:58the hair on your right,
01:59you're going to be wanting to spin out this way.
02:01So clip your hair.
02:06Oops.
02:07That's another thing that's kind of annoying.
02:10I always accidentally press the buttons with my finger by accident, and then it starts spinning the wrong way.
02:16But if it's going to go spin this way, I'm going to clip it this side.
02:21And then you press go.
02:25And it comes out.
02:27Okay, I'm going to try this one more time.
02:30And then find the go button.
02:33Now, my hair holds a curl pretty well, but if yours doesn't, you're going to want to spray it with
02:39hairspray or whatever you do to keep it in.
02:43Switching to the right side.
02:45Okay.
02:47Nope.
02:50Sometimes the hair gets wrapped up in these contraptions on the bottom, and when that happens, I just want to
02:56start again.
03:03The good thing is that I haven't burned myself yet.
03:10And I just burned myself.
03:14So my final analysis of the Beach Waver by Saripatempa is that it is, unfortunately, a fail.
03:22Not that it's not a good curling iron.
03:24It is.
03:25But for the price and all of these little doodads and spinny things and apparatuses, I just think it's a
03:30little bit unnecessary.
03:31You've seen our video how to use a curling iron, and you basically get the same exact hairdo without this.
03:39So, sorry Beach Waver.
03:41You were fun, but no go.
03:43You.
03:44Yeah.
03:45Yeah.
03:53Okay.
03:54You.
03:55Yeah.
