Long distance relationships have pros and cons, and Refinery29 talks about what has and hasn't worked for them.

00:00Hi, my name is Danielle. Hey guys, my name is Dasha. My name is Josh. Hey guys, my name is
00:04Michaela. Hi, my name is Sabine, and today we're going to talk about long-distance relationships.
00:12Woof. I've been in a long-distance relationship for the past eight months. I'm personally very
00:16independent, but also very clingy around my partner, so I really like that when I go off
00:20to school, I can be more independent and really get into my lifestyle. I've been in a long-distance
00:25relationship for a little over three years. You get to make new friends, and you get to find what
00:31makes you happy apart from your relationship. I think that it can be incredibly liberating,
00:36actually, to be able to experience all these things on your own and then go back and tell
00:41your significant other about it. I would probably not do a long-distance relationship again. I would
00:46never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever start a relationship without having that person live
00:52in the same city as me first. How are we going to build that foundation if we're not here? If
00:58you
00:58can't see me, you can't smell me, you can't feel me. They say the communication is key for any
01:04any relationship, really, but when you add long-distance into the mix, you kind of have
01:08to multiply that by 10. Don't be afraid to take a risk just because you started long-distance.
01:14Hi, my name is Amanda. Hey, my name is Juan. And we were in a long-distance relationship for
01:19five years. And now we live together in New York City. And we're engaged.
01:26At the time, for most of our long-distance, she was in college and I was working a lot, so
01:30I feel like if we were in the same state, we would have probably faced a lot more obstacles than
01:35we
01:35did when we were long-distance. So long-distance at the time really worked for us. I knew I had
01:39a
01:39game plan. I knew eventually I was going to go ahead and move my life over to New York. I
01:44wanted to be
01:44here. I've been visiting the city a lot. I loved everything about it, and I really wanted to be with
01:48Amanda.
01:49My piece of advice is to really be respectful of each other and allow each other to grow.
01:55You have to learn how to sacrifice because if you are with the right person, they're also going to be
01:59sacrificing for you. Don't be afraid to change. Don't be afraid to evolve. Block out the noise.
02:07It is so important that no matter what type of relationship you're in, you need to remember
02:11to stop listening to everyone. Don't be afraid to communicate your needs. Don't be afraid to
02:16communicate your wants. Don't be afraid to communicate your thoughts. Don't compare your
02:20relationship to anyone else's. What works for one couple definitely isn't going to work for
02:25another one, and you can't think that you're better or worse because of that. You definitely
02:29need to weigh the pros and cons before going into the relationship. You have to figure out if you're
02:33ready for it, if they're ready for it, and you have to understand that a long-distance relationship
02:38is not a death sentence, but it certainly is an obstacle, a very big one, and the two of you
02:43might not come out on the other end together. Stop putting pressure on your relationship. It's a
02:47relationship just like any other. You're going to have problems. You're going to go through good
02:51times, bad times, but at the end of the day, it's a normal, regular, everyday relationship.
