00:00Welcome to Florida's newest Venice. Water has never gotten as high. We live here.
00:05Where the water is no longer staying in the canals and has spilled into the everyday lives of flood-weary
00:12Floridians.
00:13Extremely high now.
00:14Just off the beat and path is briny breezes in Boynton Beach, Florida.
00:19South Florida's king tides rolled into this unique waterfront community and it's been an unwelcome guest since.
00:25I'm very shocked to see what I'm seeing.
00:27This is a great place to bring your family and my grandkids.
00:31For longtime South Florida residents, King Tide flooding is nothing new.
00:36They've watched the water creep into streets and neighborhoods for decades.
00:39But this October's historic flooding has rewritten the rules.
00:43Saltwater has pushed farther into coastal communities.
00:47Now this big yellow pontoon is what's called a tiger dam.
00:50Its job is to keep the water out of the streets and out of the homes.
00:54The problem is there's so much water from the king tides, it can't do that.
00:58About 500 families call briny breezes home, which was founded back in 1921 by entrepreneur Ward Miller.
01:06But the famous 1928 hurricane and then the stock market crash of 1929 put dreams of an oceanfront resort to
01:15an end.
01:15For the generations of families that call this place home, more than a century later, the water is once again
01:22threatening their slice of paradise.
01:24You kind of just have to think a little bit further in advance in the future and maybe build a
01:29little bit differently.
01:30In briny breezes, the water will eventually recede.
01:32But how this community learns to live with its return will matter long after the king tide season is over.
01:40In Boynton Beach, Florida, I'm Leslie Hudson for AccuWeather.
