00:00I heard a rumor that the costume department had like seven copies of that white dress because I
00:05kept getting Doritos on it. I hope that's not true. I mean, I do remember there being a lot
00:11of copies, but maybe that didn't have anything to do with me eating. Hi Allure, I'm Jennifer
00:16Lawrence, and today we're breaking down some of my most iconic looks.
00:26I volunteer! I volunteer!
00:30I volunteer as tribute!
00:31The Hunger Games series. I was definitely stepping into somebody who was already an unbelievable
00:39icon. The books, the story maker, an iconic character. So I always had to have dark hair
00:45obviously for Katniss, and wigs were hard because there's a lot of action, you know, getting wet,
00:52but in between Hunger Games I would either be acting in something or, you know, like the
00:57Oscars where I wanted to look like myself, which was blonde. And so when I would wrap,
01:02I would then dye my hair blonde, and so my hair started getting really damaged. And finally,
01:07I cut off all my hair in a pixie cut so that they would have to put me in a
01:13wig. And so I won that
01:15battle because they put me in a wig, but I lost the war with having that pixie cut. I would
01:21never do a
01:21pixie again. I do love changing my hairstyle. I get bored. Pixies, pixies off the table. I mean,
01:29I wear a braid almost every night because it keeps my hair from getting damaged. So I've always been a
01:33big braid
01:34girl. I'll always be a big braid girl. I think I do feel a little bit self-conscious if I'm
01:38wearing one
01:39out in public. The makeup looks were all designed around the looks of the Capitol, you know, that
01:48over-exaggerated kind of garish look. So, you know, how would somebody from the Capitol want to do her
01:57makeup? And then she kind of, through the mockingjay, starts owning it, as we, as we say. I really
02:04loved the chariot look in Catching a Fire. I also liked the dress that I wore to the President Snow's
02:11party with, like, the red in it and the feathers. And can you tease anything about you reprising your
02:16role? Well, no. Of course not. Maybe I'm not. You want to be more like Carmine? Why don't you build
02:23something like he does? Instead of all your empty deals, it's just like your fucking science oven.
02:27American Hustle 2013. This is one of my favorite characters I've ever played. Rosalyn started with
02:36nails. We started with the long red nails, the eyeliner a little bit, and then the hair just kept
02:43getting kind of higher and higher. And we kind of liked when it was, like, messy and falling. And the
02:48wardrobe was so fun. I love that character. My favorite of Rosalyn's would be when she has a
02:54neck brace but says she got in a car accident and she doesn't want to talk about it. The car
02:58is a
02:59little dinged up. I'm a little stiff, but whatever. I don't want to talk about it. Once her makeup started
03:04getting a little bit more exaggerated and her hair was, you know, then this is somebody who wants to
03:09be bigger, feel bigger, be more noticeable. So, you know, maybe she's feeling ignored at home or,
03:16you know, wants attention, wants to be loud. So all that stuff kind of starts to fill in who
03:22who she is. We were shooting in Boston, but my character was from Long Island. And so eventually
03:28I would hear the Boston accent and then I would start doing a Boston accent as opposed to a Long
03:34Island one. So David made all of the hair and makeup girls, told them not to speak. Of course,
03:39you can't tell a hair and makeup trailer not to speak. So it was whispers, which doesn't do anything
03:43for an accent. But yeah, that ended up being a funny issue. Oscars 2011. In theory, I like to
03:53imagine that I do any form of exercise in the morning to like help drain water retention doesn't
04:02always happen. I would also like to believe that I do an ice bath on the face doesn't always happen.
04:07I do always in glam. I put headphones in and listen to true crime. It helps me relax.
04:14And what advice would you give to a first time Oscar goer?
04:17Eat before. You got to eat before. There's no food. And it's like five hours long. If your dress
04:23is long, you're not really going to see your shoes go with a platform more comfortable. Listen, I haven't
04:28dated since before my marriage. So I don't really remember how this works.
04:32What works? I saw the way you're looking at me, Pat. Silver Lighting's Playbook 2012. I mean,
04:39it was so exciting. But you know, you never really know. Nobody could have known what that movie was
04:45going to end up meaning to so many people. In that character, she was a lot harder, edgier. She almost
04:52had a tongue piercing at some point, but I was too scared. And so yeah, the eyeliner was kind of
04:58her
04:59wall, her defense mechanism to hide behind. The character was actually originally written to be
05:07a professional dancer. But after they saw the way that I dance, we had to voice over,
05:12I'm not that good of a dancer. So that was nice.
05:19The dancers wear those kind of bright colors that play well with the light, but the shape of that was
05:25different than other dancers. Like it would normally be like a short dress or something. But David was
05:31watching our rehearsal videos, and I was in just like workout clothes. And I think he just got
05:37kind of locked into that look. So we kind of basically made this costume based off of my workout
05:44outfit. My favorite memory from Silver Linings, I think maybe the the Toronto Film Festival, the
05:53premiere, and having it with my parents, and like the way that the audience reacted. And I think the
05:59whole thing was so like mysterious to us. And then when the audience reacted the way that it did,
06:03it was like, it was so exciting. And my parents were so excited.
06:08Oscars 2013. Well, it was a wedding dress. And I think I was clearly looking at dresses going,
06:14more, more, more, more. It's a Dior Couture by Raph Simmons. It's beautiful. You got to put your
06:21hair back if you've got a huge, you know, bottom, bottom of the dress. So I'm happy we went with
06:28like
06:28loose back. I don't know about the backwards necklace. Maybe those will come back. But look at
06:34her. She's so tired and happy. Lift up the dress when you walk up the stairs. Remember to thank the
06:40director. It was too superstitious at the time to write like a speech because I was like, if I write
06:47it down and I prepare, then I won't win. And I think I would just tell the 22 year old,
06:52that's not true.
06:53And you'll regret it. Golden Globes 2026. I mean, they're artists, you know, and Georgie and Gregory,
07:02they did an amazing job. Are the bangs here to stay? I think because I'm only getting more wrinkled
07:08and I'm not going to like start getting more Botox. So, you know, maybe, but I do, I get bored
07:13and I like change. So maybe I'll grow them out. This year, you're launching your own haircare line
07:18called Mess. What made you want to launch a lot? I mean, hair has always been such a big part
07:25of my
07:25life. And so I was always a big, you know, consumer with hair products, but I also felt like I
07:31had a
07:32lot of problems and questions that, you know, I needed answering. And I had a really, really specific
07:39idea of what I wanted to do. And it wasn't until I actually came across Jasmina, the scientist behind
07:45Archaea, that I realized that is, that is the person that would actually be able to execute some of these,
07:50like specific ideas. So then once we met, it started coming together. Now with like the final
07:57products, I don't have to wash my hair as much, which is such a lifesaver for me as I have
08:02long,
08:02thick hair, like blowing it dry is just a long, arduous process. And then also with our
08:08multitask repair mask, I told them when we, I wanted a mask that I could put on dry hair
08:13and either leave it on for five minutes or be able to sleep in it. Cause a lot of them,
08:17they're all designed to be put on in the shower after you've shampooed, but then they say sit
08:23for 20 minutes and then wash it out. And I'm like, what? I just felt like I, nothing actually fit
08:29around my life. So with the multitask repair mask, I can just put it on dry hair, do something with
08:35my,
08:35my life clean, you know, pop out, do a workout, come back, rinse my hair. So that's been major.
08:52What's the matter, baby? You don't think I look pretty like this? The X-Men series. My favorite
08:58part about playing Mystique was the stunts. It was so fun to get to train in that way and learn
09:05how to
09:06move. And I had the same stunt double, Renee Moneymaker, who was Katniss and she's like one of
09:12my best friends. So that was great. My least favorite part was most certainly the paint.
09:18From your experience as Mystique, would you consider a role that has heavy prosthetic work
09:23and or transformative beauty again? Never say never, but absolutely fucking not.
09:27Because you know how airbrushing is very cold. So it was like seven airbrushes all,
09:31I mean, and I'm ticklish too. So they'd come up and you know, like, I think I learned how little
09:37sleep
09:38I can operate on and what can happen to the human mind when you've absolutely reached your breaking
09:44point and patience. Oscars 2018. I don't know. You know, sometimes it's better to choose eye or lip.
09:55I had cut my hair because my ends were fried, of course, but I still wanted to be blonde and
10:00I clearly
10:02wanted to look like I had makeup on. And the dress is by Christian Dior by Maria Grazia Thierry.
10:09I mean, Hung is a genius. He was obviously just following my direction of more, more, more, more.
10:14Yeah. And Jenny Cho here. I think I saw Meryl Streep and I think I was headed for her. Gunning,
10:20you could say. I thought that, you know, you leave the red carpet and there's so many photographers and
10:26so many that I think I assumed they were all out there and there was nobody photographing in here.
10:34And yeah, yeah. Well, maybe the destruction of the entire planet isn't supposed to be fun.
10:43Don't look up 2021. Kate is, she's funky. She's smart. She doesn't like really conform to one thing or
10:51another with this wig. We tried so many different iterations and then we did like a little razor cut
10:57and then it was like, oh, there it is. She's tough. It feels tough. And I remember the wardrobe kind
11:04of
11:04wanting to look more into like vintage tees and harder kind of rock stuff because she's specifically
11:12with what she's studying. It's a very male dominated field.
11:16The nose ring was magnetic. And sometimes if I inhaled, like I would suck and swallow the whole
11:25thing in front of everybody. And I also, in that movie, lost a veneer and it was COVID pre-vaccine.
11:33So I couldn't go to the dentist. So they just had to put it in digitally. So I just like,
11:38was like,
11:38I just like did most of the movie with a missing tooth. People were super into me at the time.
11:43I was like, guys, guys, stop. I'm married, please. I think my beauty evolution as I get older,
11:51because I feel like it's always kind of evolving as it should, you know, like style, but it's really
11:56more health-based now. I think like my skin, I just, I want it to actually be healthy because then
12:03it
12:03looks better. And the same with my hair. I don't actually find, you know, in normal day-to-day life,
12:10like an over-styled like hair is cool. I actually think like, I like to look a little bit less
12:19fussed. I mean, I think that I've, I've developed more agency as I've gotten older, as one does
12:25naturally. And I think I've started to feel more and more like I can look like myself or dress like
12:31myself as opposed to being a, like a different kind of a character. Thanks for going down memory lane.
12:39Bye, Allure.
