00:00This video I consider my royal look.
00:02I feel like it's the way I would want to look
00:06if I were a queen.
00:07Hi, I'm Shania Twain, and I'm gonna be breaking down
00:10some of my most iconic video looks.
00:18Let's go, girls.
00:19Man, I feel like a woman.
00:221997, directed by Paul Boyd.
00:24As a teenager, I watched so many pop videos, MTV.
00:31Dominating, at the time, was Madonna.
00:34You know, she was very famous for the corset looks
00:38and gloves and glamor and all of that sort of thing.
00:42It was something that influenced me.
00:45It was chic, it was stylish.
00:47The fact that the song, Man, I Feel Like a Woman,
00:50it had so many messages in it as a song.
00:54Man, exclamation mark.
00:56I Feel Like a Woman, such a statement,
00:58which was a personal statement of mine,
01:01really starting to feel comfortable in my own skin
01:04as a female with a female figure.
01:05So I wanted to create a silhouette that was very form-fitted
01:09in with the corset look and the mini skirt,
01:13the tight mini skirt, but also the strength of the man suit.
01:18The styling ended up being a mesh,
01:21a meld of the female, the feminine masculine look
01:25that you see in the video.
01:27It was literal in some cases.
01:30The lyric is men's shirt, short skirts.
01:32You know, so that dictated a lot of it.
01:35So the styling was dictated a lot by the song itself,
01:39what the song was saying,
01:40and Madonna being quite an influence.
01:44And, you know, reversing the roles with the musicians as well
01:47was part of the whole, let's mix all of this up.
01:52The male, the female, the masculine, the feminine.
01:54So that meant the band was going to be the sexy,
01:58let's see what's under those shirts.
02:01Addicted to Love, the video was...
02:03Mutt actually saw the video.
02:05He said, Man, I feel like a woman is exactly that, reversed.
02:10The top hat says, it's a statement, here I am.
02:14The top hat is Liza Minnelli, she's a force.
02:17She comes on the stage and she's with her top hat.
02:21That really topped off the whole look, you know, the top hat.
02:24And then the veil, to me that was just very glamorous.
02:26It's very Breakfast at Tiffany's.
02:28It's very, again, kicks, takes me back to the 80s.
02:32It was part of the performance.
02:34It's the one eye.
02:35It was a really great frame.
02:37So the top hat framed it all in.
02:39And it wasn't about the hair, but it was about the sleek Audrey Hepburn meets Liza Minnelli.
02:46Any Man of Mine, 1995.
02:49Directed by John Derrick and Charlie Randazzo.
02:52This video really makes me chuckle.
02:54I love to ride horses.
02:56And I was in heaven just being around horses that whole day.
03:00Riding out, playing cowgirl.
03:04This video is all my own wardrobe.
03:06The t-shirt, I snipped it up the front and tied it again to just give a little looser, fun
03:15look with the belly button.
03:16And Bo Derrick lent me her chaps.
03:19That added a nice touch.
03:22And the brown spaghetti strap dress was bought at a department store.
03:28And I went braless in that.
03:30I was just going through this whole braless stage.
03:32Because I was so tired of being strapped in and strapped down.
03:36I was very sporty as a kid.
03:37And I was always one of these double bra girls so that I wouldn't bounce around.
03:41My hair cut at all times is always something that I need to have fun with and be able to
03:46be playful with.
03:47I like it to move.
03:48At this time in my career, I was still my own hair cutter.
03:52So I cut my own hair.
03:54Fun thing about this video that I indulged in was the horses.
03:59And given a towel in the bathtub by a horse through the window was so magical.
04:05His name was Slick.
04:06And he was a gelding paint.
04:08And the trainer did train this horse to hand you items.
04:14And this horse genuinely did hand me the towel.
04:19He completely understood the cue.
04:21And on cue.
04:22I would say a very fairytale experience for me.
04:25I was living the liberation that I had never lived before.
04:31And coming into my own.
04:33This was a good video that was a turning point for me in that sense of really coming into my
04:38own.
04:38Looks like we made it.
04:41You're still the one.
04:431997.
04:44Directed by David Hogan.
04:46There's a fun fact in this video.
04:48The male model in this video is the same male model.
04:52That don't impress me much.
04:54I'm like, I recognize you.
04:56You're still the one video I thought was really beautifully lit.
05:03The idea of the video was meant to be quite moody.
05:08Very romantic.
05:09Moonlit.
05:10Black and white.
05:11But not black and white.
05:12I also remember this is the first time that I had hair extensions.
05:16They were glued onto my scalp.
05:18They went in very quickly.
05:19And then at the end of the video everybody says goodnight and bye and everybody's on the way.
05:23And then I'm stuck with all this glue in my hair.
05:25It was a nightmare.
05:26So it took me days to get these extensions out of my hair.
05:30I had no experience with hair extensions yet.
05:33All of those waves, they were crimped in, but it was layers also of glued in extensions.
05:39I was influenced by Boys of Summer, Don Henley.
05:44And so I shared that with David and I thought he really nailed it.
05:48You know, the songs are completely different.
05:50But this was that kind of moody, beach, nighttime, romance, film-like, cinematic video.
05:59Which, I mean, it's very natural and lends itself to being very sensual.
06:06A man and woman alone in love and what that would look like.
06:09But not sexual nudity or anything like that.
06:13And, you know, I was sort of, no, no, let's define the difference between sexual and sensual.
06:19Sensual can be, you can have all of your clothes on and it can be very sensual.
06:24I'm not sure that you can actually have sex with your clothes on, but you can be sensual.
06:29With your clothes on, maybe that's a good way of putting it.
06:33From This Moment On, 1997, directed by Paul Boyd.
06:38The From This Moment On video, in my mind visually, was always going to be
06:46classic and with symphonic instruments in the room.
06:51I wanted people to feel like they were in the space experiencing the video.
06:57Even though they're watching a video.
07:00I'm in love with crush velvet that stretches.
07:05I've done so many looks with this type of fabric.
07:10I wanted this to have a little bit of an East Indian, Eastern feel to it.
07:14More of an emotionally spiritual sense to the look of the video.
07:19Hence, you know, the white, the golds.
07:21I didn't realize when the song was written and when the video was made that this was going to become
07:26such a big wedding song.
07:27Sometimes I wonder if the look of the video with the veil and the white and the gown and the
07:35train
07:35of the gown influenced people or whether it was the song itself.
07:41So I don't know which was first, but now when I reflect on the video, it does look very wedding
07:45-like.
07:49That Don't Impress Me Much 1998 directed by Paul Boyd.
07:54That Don't Impress Me Much video was the first time I'd experimented with a different hair color.
07:59And with this cropped bang, it was really fun to now take on a character.
08:04You know, it wasn't the first time I was role playing in a video, but I felt like I was
08:08a different
08:08character in this video.
08:10We had men coming along trying to make an impression on me and, of course, I'm not impressed at all.
08:15The song is really one of a confident woman who is very capable of walking across the dry desert
08:22in her leopard print head-to-toe wardrobe and her leopard print suitcase all by herself.
08:31It's all really great in the great spirit and sense of humor of the lyric of the song.
08:36My love of the leopard print started when I was introduced to it while shooting the video
08:41Love Gets Me Every Time.
08:43In the styling on the rack, there was a leopard print coat and I fell in love with it.
08:50They actually gave it to me.
08:51I loved it so much.
08:52It was so awesome.
08:53I wanted to explore more wardrobe and leopard print and I went crazy with head-to-toe,
09:00hood and all, boots, luggage, and, of course, it was stretch fabric, stretch leopard print.
09:07It was a little warm.
09:08I'm not going to lie, but I was in midriff, you know, a nice open cleavage.
09:13So, you know, that was my cooling system.
09:15But, and I think after that I dominated the leopard print in fashion.
09:22That's what I would say.
09:25Let's go.
09:27I'm going to get you good.
09:292002, directed by Paul Boyce.
09:31I'm going to get you good is my leather and lace moments.
09:35I really wanted the leather and lace.
09:38I was inspired by Stevie Nicks, I think.
09:42I had just had my son.
09:44I was still nursing and I was keen to get into something form-fitting and say,
09:52wow, okay, I'm back and I can wear something that shows my curves.
09:58I paid attention to staying fit through my pregnancy.
10:00I was told that nursing really gets your tummy back in the fastest.
10:05It's the fastest way to get your tummy back in is to nurse.
10:08So I'm like, okay, baby, nurse as long as you want.
10:11And the hair was fantasy.
10:12I wanted the longest hair possible.
10:14And I'd already had experience with the glued in extensions from the You're Still the One video.
10:19So I'm like, okay, I'm okay with having the glue in now.
10:22I know how to get it out.
10:23So let's go for the longest hair possible.
10:24I asked the stylist, you know, I want to do mini braids.
10:27I want multi textures in the hair.
10:29I want it disheveled, but I also want it fantasy and feminine, deconstructed but still flowing.
10:36It still has to flow and be beautiful.
10:38It was a whole real look that I was very proud of because it was different and daring.
10:45The makeup was a little more goth.
10:48The whole look was, and I thought that was fitting for the animation in the storyboard.
10:57Forever and for Always, 2003, directed by Paul Boyd.
11:02Forever and for Always, this video was shot in New Zealand.
11:05And I did not have access to wardrobe where we were.
11:11We were somewhere very remote.
11:12I did have a hair and makeup artist that I brought in from Canada.
11:18Stacy Martin did so many of my more, well, a lot of my, no matter what the look was,
11:23whether it was natural or high fashion, she did a lot of those looks.
11:25She was, and is so talented.
11:28But I didn't have a stylist.
11:30You know, we were a long way from any real shopping.
11:33So I just used the hotel throw blankets and sewed some shape to them.
11:43And that was the outfit.
11:45So I just created some arm shapes to this shawl.
11:49And then there was like a light cotton throw blanket that I used as a wrap.
11:54That was it.
11:55I do think it's so important for all of us to know what our go-to comfortable,
12:00natural makeup face is.
12:03And I think that's different for everybody.
12:04I love to have a liner, like a very, something that defines the shape in my lip.
12:08But I'm really happy to have a very nude color on the lip.
12:11Blush color bronzer is a must.
12:14I don't need to do the foundation.
12:17I think that that's not natural.
12:19I think, don't go with any foundation if you really want to have a nice natural look.
12:22But I like to use a little concealer if I have a little dot there or a little red blemish
12:28or whatever.
12:29And I just do the very minor touches.
12:32And then I just bronze or blush over.
12:35Always a brow liner and light mascara.
12:39That's all you need, really.
12:41Whose bed have your boots been under?
12:44Whose bed have your boots been under?
12:461995.
12:47Directed by John Derrick.
12:49This is my very first video shot by John Derrick.
12:54And Bo Derrick was also the photographer.
12:58She was co-directing.
13:00It was a real family affair.
13:03So I felt very comfortable so early on in my video making career.
13:06The wardrobe I picked out myself.
13:08So I did all my own styling.
13:11The denim on denim.
13:12I pulled the denim vest and the jeans out of my own closet.
13:15And the red dress, the red velvet dress.
13:18I think it was just, it was just bought at a department store.
13:22And I went brawless, which was quite daring.
13:26Brawless and barefoot.
13:27So the hair on the video was done by Bo Derrick's mother, actually.
13:32Her name was Norma.
13:33She was a hairstylist in Hollywood for many, many years.
13:37And especially with Ann-Margaret.
13:38So she did the hair and the makeup.
13:41I didn't really know much about what to do with my hair.
13:45So we didn't get too daring with the hairstyles or changing it up too much.
13:50The video really is fun.
13:52The concept of the men in the cafe ignoring me the whole time.
13:58Which really put me in a place of going overboard to flirt with them to try to get their attention.
14:03They were all local people.
14:05They were definitely quite shy.
14:09They weren't actors.
14:10They weren't accustomed to taking acting direction.
14:14So I thought they did a really, really good job of ignoring me.
14:20Ka-ching 2003, directed by Auntie Jay Yokunin.
14:25Ka-ching was what I would consider a very eclectic video.
14:29It was shot in Mexico City.
14:31There were so many incredible things that happened during this video.
14:33I'm gonna have to, I'll have to speak fast so I get it all in.
14:35There was an earthquake, a really big one, in Mexico City when we were shooting this video.
14:39And we were in an old building in the city.
14:43And the building was just, like, just swaying in slow motion.
14:48The chandeliers were swinging back and forth.
14:51And the staircase was waving.
14:54And we had to go down the staircase in order to get out of the building.
14:57But Ka-ching was also shot on my birthday.
15:00And for my birthday, the director brought in a beautiful black stallion Andalusian horse.
15:10That I got to ride on the break between shots.
15:14And it was so touching and moving.
15:17And I, so I had the best birthday ever.
15:20This video I consider my royal look.
15:22I feel like it's the way I would want to look if I were a queen.
15:26The rocker outfit, I was inspired by Cher.
15:31And I don't normally go with a really, like, sleek, sleek, sleek, straight, straight, straight hair.
15:38But Cher inspired me.
15:39And so that was the look for that.
15:41And then, you know, just the band with the coins and the silhouette.
15:46I felt like I was reflecting back to the 60s.
15:50When Cher was in that, the flare bottoms and the form fit.
15:56So it was Cher-esque, that look.
15:58Do you know I adore you?
16:00Wakin' Up Dreamin' 2022, directed by Isaac Renz.
16:04I love this video.
16:06This is my play.
16:07My ultimate play with color and texture.
16:10I was playing rock star from the late 70s.
16:15You know, this was my Prince Elton John and David Bowie born as a woman all at one time.
16:23I'm their child, you know, in this video.
16:25You know, it's all about the dream.
16:27And it's all about fantasy and going a little crazy with your ideas and the eyelashes.
16:33It was a great escapism for me, too, because it took me away from looking classically like myself,
16:41which I really, really enjoyed.
16:43And I just love the diversity of being able to do that as well.
16:49Well, I do have new music coming out.
16:51And the first song is Dirty Rosie, but the album is called Little Miss Twain.
16:57And the title track is Little Miss Twain.
16:59It is what I was introduced as, or how I was introduced, going on stage as a child.
17:08It was, you know, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the stage, Little Miss Twain.
17:12And this is when I was so little that I was still smaller than my guitar.
17:17But that guitar stayed with me right up until my teens.
17:21I'm going to get the chance to perform the first single, Dirty Rosie, during my shows with Harry Styles
17:29in London at Wembley Stadium, which is beyond exciting.
17:35And it's really, really a great honor to have been invited.
17:38You know, I'm his guest.
17:39I'm his special guest, which is super sweet on his part.
17:42So I'm going to have a lot of fun with that.
17:44Thank you, Allure.
17:45I cannot wait to do this again soon.
17:47Bye.
17:47Bye.
17:49Bye.
