01:38There is no greater hero for the Jewish people than the man Moses,
01:43and for good reason.
01:44I mean, think how Moses demonstrated his faith.
01:47He confronted the Pharaoh of Egypt.
01:50He believed God would divide the Red Sea.
01:53He led the slaves through the wilderness
01:54and brought them to the edge of the Promised Land.
01:58No, Moses wasn't perfect,
02:00but his faith was strong enough to defeat Egypt and redeem Israel.

04:04Moses occupies more attention than any other in this list of men and women of faith
04:10here in the 11th chapter,
04:11and he is a significant character in the book of Hebrews
04:15being mentioned in this book alone some 10 different times.
04:19Now, we begin reading the text and understanding it
04:24with the testimony of Moses' life
04:27and his relationship, first of all, with God.
04:32The Bible tells us a lot about Moses.
04:36First of all, the Bible tells us that Moses was a man of God.
04:41Deuteronomy 33.1 says it this way,
04:43Now, this was the blessing with which Moses, the man of God,
04:48blessed the children of Israel before his death.
04:51Ezra says it this way,
04:53And it is written in the law of Moses, the man of God.
04:57Now, that phrase appears again in the New Testament
05:00in the Thessalonian and Titus epistles.
05:03But what a credit to anybody to be called a man of God.
05:07What a testimony.
05:08What a name we should covet for ourselves.
05:10There goes so-and-so. He's a man of God.
05:13And Moses was, first of all,
05:15in his relationship with the Almighty,
05:17he was a man of God.
05:20But if you study the Old Testament,
05:22you discover also that he was a servant of God.
05:25He was not only a man of God, he was a servant of God.
05:28Once again, Deuteronomy 34 and verse 5 says,
05:31So Moses, the servant of the Lord,
05:34died in the land of Moab opposite Beth Peor,
05:37but no one knows his grave till this day.
05:40And Hebrews 3, 5 says,
05:42Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant.
05:47So what we've learned so far about Moses
05:49was he was a man of God.
05:50He was a servant of God.
05:52And here's the most unusual thing of all of them.
05:55He was a friend of God.
05:57It says in Exodus 33, 11,
05:59So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face
06:03as a man speaks to his friend.
06:07He was God's friend.
06:10John 15, 15 says in the New Testament,
06:13No longer do I call you servants,
06:16for a servant does not know what his master is doing.
06:19But I have called you friends,
06:22for all things that I heard from my Father
06:25I have made known to you.
06:27Jesus says we are friends.
06:30And I'm so delighted to know that Jesus Christ is my Savior.
06:34I'm happy to know that he's my Lord
06:35and he's my soon-coming King,
06:38but every week I need to have him as my friend,
06:41especially these days.
06:43So that's his relationship with God.
06:45Simply put, outlined carefully,
06:47he was a man of God, he was a servant of God,
06:49he was a friend of God.
06:50But notice the record of his achievements.
06:54There is evidence to believe that he may have been
06:56one of the greatest men who ever lived
06:58apart from the Lord Jesus Christ
06:59and maybe the Apostle Paul.
07:03In Deuteronomy 34,
07:05we have just a few statements about him
07:07and his life that are quite amazing
07:09when you put them in context with the entire Word of God.
07:12Notice what the Scripture says.
07:14Moses was 120 years old when he died.
07:18Now that's a pretty good statement right there.
07:21No matter where you are in life,
07:23Moses lived to be 120.
07:25And the Bible says,
07:27his eyes were not dim,
07:29nor his natural vigor diminished.
07:32And since then,
07:33there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses,
07:36whom the Lord knew face to face
07:38in all signs and wonders
07:40which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt
07:43before Pharaoh,
07:44before all his servants and in all his land,
07:47and by all that mighty power
07:49and all that great terror
07:50which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.
07:55Now that's quite a paragraph about Moses.
07:59Now notice, secondly,
08:01the time periods of Moses' life.
08:03The Old Testament coverage of Moses
08:05begins in Exodus chapter 2
08:07and it continues all the way through Deuteronomy chapter 34.
08:12Four of the five books of the Pentateuch
08:15are required to make known
08:16all the acts of this man of God.
08:19He had three periods of time in his life.
08:22All of them were 40 years long.
08:24He lived 120 years,
08:26divided by three,
08:27into three 40-year periods of time.
08:29He spent 40 years in Pharaoh's court,
08:32he spent 40 years in the desert of Midian,
08:35and he spent 40 years in the wilderness
08:37with the Israelites.
08:39Each of these three periods began with a crisis
08:41which was met by faith
08:44and which in turn resulted in a strategic choice.
08:47Watch carefully.
08:49The first period of preparation, 40 years,
08:52we read about this here in Hebrews 11, verse 23.
08:55By faith, Moses, when he was born,
08:59was hidden three months by his parents
09:02because they saw he was a beautiful child
09:05and they were not afraid of the king's command.
09:08Pharaoh commanded the people saying,
09:10Exodus 1, 22,
09:13Every son who is born you shall cast into the river
09:16and every daughter you shall save alive.
09:21During this awful time in Egypt,
09:23Moses was born.
09:26And the Bible tells us
09:27that Moses' parents had courage in that time.
09:31We read about the courage of his parents.
09:34According to Exodus chapter 2,
09:36Moses' parents were Levites
09:37and it is evident that they had a great faith in God.
09:40And Hebrews says that it was by faith in God
09:44that they hid their son.
09:47Years earlier, God had told Abraham
09:49that in the fourth generation after his death,
09:52the Israelites would be delivered from Egypt
09:54and Moses would have been a member
09:57of that fourth generation.
09:59I'd like to suggest to you three things
10:01about Moses' parents that are encouraging.
10:03First of all,
10:04they had the faith to see the potential in Moses.
10:08They had the faith to see the potential in Moses.
10:11Hebrews 11, 23 says,
10:12by faith they saw that he was a beautiful child.
10:18Exodus 2, 2 says,
10:20she saw he was a beautiful child.
10:23Acts 7, 20 says,
10:25at this time Moses was born
10:26and he was well-pleasing to God.
10:29The Bible says when Moses was born,
10:31he was a strikingly handsome child.
10:34He was beautiful.
10:36This wasn't the kind of faith
10:38that Moses' parents had to express.
10:40This was the kind of faith
10:42that looked into the face of this little one
10:43and knew according to the nuances
10:45of the Old Testament
10:46that Almighty God had something special
10:48for this child to do.
10:50In other words,
10:51to Moses' parents,
10:54Moses was more than a new baby,
10:56more than what others saw.
10:58This was somebody important to God.
11:00I don't know how you feel about this,
11:02but let me just go off course
11:05for a little bit here for a moment.
11:07I was listening to a radio program this week
11:10that I listened to on occasion.
11:11When I'm driving to work,
11:13this program happens to be on XM
11:14and it's another Bible teacher.
11:16If I told you his name,
11:17you would know it
11:18and I'm not picking on him.
11:19I'm just going to tell you what he said.
11:20He was telling a story about his son.
11:22He was preaching a sermon
11:24on how extraordinary God is
11:26and how ordinary we are.
11:28And he told about his son
11:30and he said that his son
11:31was a really good basketball player
11:34when he was in junior high.
11:36And then when he got to high school,
11:38he was sort of not as great
11:41as he was in junior high.
11:42And then when he got out of high school
11:44and tried to go to college,
11:45he said one of the great things
11:47we had to teach this boy
11:48was how ordinary he was.
11:51And I almost ran off the road
11:54because I don't believe
11:55that's what God has called us to do at all.
11:57I think we should try to teach our children
11:59how extraordinary they are.
12:00Now, it may not have anything
12:01to do with basketball,
12:02but you know that God has a plan
12:04for every baby that's born
12:05and especially children born
12:07into Christian families.
12:08God has a plan for them
12:10and we ought to constantly be telling them
12:12that God has a plan for their life
12:14and that God's going to do something special
12:15in their lives.
12:17And that's what the Bible says about Moses.
12:20His parents saw the potential in him
12:22more than just his good looks,
12:24but they knew in their heart
12:25that God had something special for him to do.
12:30Their faith had to see the potential in Moses,
12:33but their faith had to seek protection from Moses.
12:36Hebrews 11, 23 says,
12:39by faith they hid him for three months.
12:43Just having faith that God has a purpose
12:45for this child was not enough.
12:47They had to act on the basis of their faith.
12:50And the Bible says they hid Moses for three months
12:52because they were not afraid
12:54of the king's commandments.
12:55So, they had faith to see Moses' potential.
12:58They had faith to seek protection for him.
13:01And then number three,
13:02they had faith to sacrifice
13:03their personal ambitions for Moses.
13:07Acts 7, 21 says,
13:09but when he was set out,
13:11Pharaoh's daughter took him away
13:12and brought him up as her own son.
13:16The only way Moses could survive
13:18the holocaust of the children of his day
13:21was for his parents to give him over
13:24to the daughter of Pharaoh.
13:26And she took him to Egypt
13:28and she raised Moses apart from his natural family.
13:33The Bible says that his parents allowed this to happen.
13:37What was the key to it?
13:38By faith.
13:40Whoa.
13:41Now, that puts faith down
13:42where the rubber meets the road, doesn't it?
13:44That puts faith down where,
13:45I mean, you say,
13:46I don't know if I could do that, Pastor.
13:48Well, they couldn't do it either except by faith.
13:52So, that was the courage of Moses' parents.
13:55Notice the course of Moses' preparation.
13:57When Moses left home,
13:59he went with Pharaoh's daughter
14:00and he went into the whole palace regime of Egypt.
14:04Acts chapter 7 and verse 22 says,
14:06and Moses was learned
14:08in all the wisdom of the Egyptians
14:10and he was mighty in words and in deeds.
14:14And I've written down in my notes,
14:16Moses went to Egypt
14:17and three things happened to him.
14:19First of all, he became a student.
14:20The Bible says he was learned
14:22in all the wisdom of the Egyptians.
14:24He took courses in Egyptian history
14:26and Egyptian philosophy
14:28and Egyptian practice.
14:31He became a learned Egyptian.
14:33He was a student.
14:36Secondly, he was a statesman.
14:38The Bible says that Moses became mighty in words.
14:43He was able to state his own case.
14:45He was able to make a case for himself.
14:48He was endowed with unique oratorical powers.
14:52And thirdly, he was a soldier.
14:55The Bible says he was mighty in deeds.
14:57And if you read the secular history of that time,
15:00tradition records the great victories
15:03for the Egyptian armies
15:04that were gained under Moses' leadership.
15:07During his tenure in Egypt,
15:09Moses would have been learned in military training
15:11and discipline and patience
15:13and quick decision-making.
15:15And he would have met many classmates
15:17from many countries
15:18and no doubt traveled
15:19to many different parts of the world.
15:21What was God up to in all of this?
15:24God sent him to the enemy
15:25so that he could get trained
15:27to do what God was going to put him in task to do.
15:29And by faith, his parents gave him up.
15:32And by faith, he went to Egypt.
15:34And notice not only the courage of his parents
15:37and the course of his preparation,
15:39but notice the conviction of his heart.
15:43Hebrews 11, 24 and 26 says this.
15:46By faith, Moses, when he became of age,
15:50refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter,
15:55choosing rather to suffer affliction
15:57with the people of God
15:58than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,
16:02esteeming the reproach of Christ's greater riches
16:05than the treasures in Egypt,
16:06for he looked for a reward.
16:09Now watch what happened here.
16:11This moment in Moses' life
16:13has been called the psychology of a great refusal.
16:16He looked at Israel and he saw poverty.
16:19But there are four verbs in Hebrews 11
16:22that tell us how he made the decision.
16:25I want you to underline these verbs in your Bibles.
16:28First of all, verse 24, refusing.
16:32Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter.
16:36He had learned his courage from his parents
16:38and it was a great lesson that they had passed on to him.
16:42He said, I could, but I will not.
16:44It's possible for me to do it, but I'm not going to do it.
16:47And he refused.
16:49The first verb is the word refusing.
16:52But then in verse 25, he went from refusing to choosing.
16:57Moses chose rather to suffer affliction
17:00with the people of God
17:01than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin.
17:05Surely he had to have been tempted by the pleasures of sin,
17:08but he deliberately sided with God's people.
17:13The pleasures of sin are only for a season,
17:15but the people of God have eternal pleasures.
17:19Psalm 1611 says,
17:21You will show me the path of life.
17:24In your presence is the fullness of joy.
17:28At your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
17:33So, he began by refusing.
17:35He continued by choosing.
17:37And he went on by esteeming.
17:39Notice verse 11, 26.
17:41Moses esteemed the reproach of Christ
17:44greater riches than the treasures in Egypt.
17:48This word esteeming means accounting.
17:52It means, in the language of the Old Testament,
17:54it means balancing this against that.
17:57But, and he esteemed it, and he accounted it,
18:00and he calculated it out,
18:01and he put it down on a sheet of paper,
18:03and he drew a line down the middle,
18:04and he put all the blessings of God over here,
18:06and all the pleasures of Egypt over here.
18:08And in that light,
18:10he made a very strong calculating decision.
18:13He esteemed, the Bible says,
18:16the reproach of Christ greater than the riches
18:19of the treasures of Egypt.
18:22And then one last thing.
18:23Refusing and choosing and esteeming.
18:25The last one is the word looking.
18:28It says, Moses looked to the reward.
18:31There's the last verb.
18:32He refused, he chose, he esteemed, and he looked.
18:36Verse 26, Moses looked to the reward.
18:39Someone has written that the reason many of us give up
18:42and give in to temptation is not that we want too much,
18:46but that we settle for too little.
18:50Moses wanted more than the pleasures of Egypt could give him.
18:54He wanted something that would last forever.
18:57He wanted eternal pleasures.
18:58And this is the reason or rationale of Moses' faith.
19:01It is the reason he endured and he was faithful.
19:05Moses was filled with conviction
19:06that God was promising him greater wealth
19:09than the treasures of Egypt.
19:11Hebrews 12, 2 and 3 says about our Lord,
19:15that for the joy that was set before him,
19:17he endured the cross, despising the shame.
19:21In many respects, that's what Moses was doing.
19:24He was looking forward.
19:26He was living forward, realizing that he could get the pleasures
19:31of life for a season, but they would soon be over
19:33or he could choose the things that last for eternity.
19:36And isn't that the choice we're constantly making as God's people?
19:40I mean, that doesn't mean that we can't have some of the blessings
19:43of this world.
19:44God provides all good things for us to enjoy.
19:45But sooner or later along the way, we have to make a choice
19:48like Moses made in more than one area of our life.
19:52And he had the faith to do it.
19:55So that's the period of preparation.
19:57Forty years, Moses is getting ready.
19:59First of all, for a short time in his parents' house,
20:02and then for the rest of the 40 years,
20:04living under Pharaoh in Pharaoh's house
20:07as the surrogate son of Pharaoh's daughter.
20:13We come to the second period of his life.
20:16This is what we might call the period of isolation.
20:19Again, it was 40 years.
20:21And let me read to you from the book of Acts,
20:22verses 23 through 29.
20:26Now, when Moses was 40 years old,
20:29it came into his heart to visit his brethren,
20:32the children of Israel.
20:34And seeing one of them suffer wrong,
20:36he defended and avenged him who was oppressed
20:39and struck down the Egyptian,
20:41for he supposed that his brethren would have understood
20:44that God would deliver them by his hand.
20:46But they did not understand.
20:48Moses thought, they're going to think,
20:49you know, God sent him here to help us,
20:51but they didn't get it.
20:53And the next day, he appeared to two of them
20:56as they were fighting,
20:56and he tried to reconcile them, saying,
20:58men, you are brethren.
20:59What are you fighting?
21:01Why do you do wrong one to another?
21:03But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away,
21:06saying, who made you a ruler and a judge over us?
21:09Do you want to kill me as you did that Egyptian yesterday?
21:14At this saying, Moses fled,
21:17and he went to the wilderness
21:18and became a dweller in the land of Midian,
21:21where he had two sons,
21:23and when 40 years had passed, he came back.
21:27Are you getting this?
21:30There were some things that Moses could not learn
21:32in prosperity,
21:33some things that he had to learn in adversity.
21:37Moses went from 40 years in the palace of Egypt
21:40to 40 years on the backside of the Midian desert,
21:43taking care of a bunch of filthy sheep
21:45that belonged to his father-in-law.
21:48And you can just imagine, over and over again,
21:51Moses saying, what am I doing here?
21:53But the Bible says God was ministering to his life,
21:56and it was on the backside of the desert
21:58where he had that incredible experience,
21:59that crisis experience at the burning bush.
22:04The period of preparation, 40 years.
22:07The period of isolation, 40 years.
22:10And finally, the period of validation, 40 years.
22:13Once again, read with me Hebrews 11, 27.
22:17By faith, Moses forsook Egypt,
22:20not fearing the wrath of the king,
22:22but he endured as seeing him who is invisible.
22:26By faith, he kept the Passover
22:28and the sprinkling of the blood,
22:30lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
22:33By faith, they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land,
22:37whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned.
22:42Moses' 40 years of preparation were over,
22:45and his 40 years of probation were accomplished.
22:48It was time for him to lead his people.
22:52Beginning at the age of 80,
22:54Moses began his great work for God
22:57as he led the Israelites out of Egypt
22:59and through the wilderness toward the land of Canaan.
23:02The last 40 years of Moses' life became the time
23:05where he became the leader of the Israelites,
23:07battled with Pharaoh,
23:09led the people out into the wilderness,
23:10wandered in the wilderness,
23:12and then after all that hard work,
23:14Moses, at the age of 120, got mad one day
23:18and did something God told him not to do,
23:20and God didn't allow him to go into the promised land.
23:24That's a reminder to all of us
23:25that you can get all the way to the end
23:27and still blow it big time if you're not careful.
23:31Moses was at the end of his life,
23:32and God wouldn't let him go into the promised land.
23:35You say, that was kind of severe, wasn't it?
23:36I mean, after all God did in Moses' life
23:39and all that Moses did for God.
23:42But you know what I always like to think about?
23:45I like to think about the fact
23:46that he didn't get to go in there
23:47with the rest of the people.
23:49But when you come to the New Testament
23:52and the Mount of Transfiguration,
23:53you see Moses right alongside Jesus in the promised land.
23:57So God just put him on the shelf for a few years
23:59and let him see it later.
24:02And I've written this down.
24:03I don't know where I heard this or where I read it,
24:05but I think it speaks marvelous truth about Moses.
24:09Moses spent his first 40 years learning to be somebody.
24:14And then he spent his next 40 years
24:16learning that he was nobody.
24:18And then he spent the last 40 years
24:20learning that God can take a nobody
24:22and make him into a somebody.
24:24Isn't that the way God worked in his life?
24:28And that's the way he works in our lives,
24:29not in 40-year segments,
24:30because none of us here live to be 120.
24:33But I think one of the things I've learned about this
24:35is that we should never despise
24:37the times of training and the quiet times.
24:40Maybe you're going through a time right now
24:41where you've been set aside for a reason.
24:44I can think of many reasons why that would be true.
24:46And maybe you think,
24:47God has forgotten me.
24:49God's put me on the shelf.
24:50God's not using me anymore.
24:51But God may be just giving you a little taste of Midian.
24:54He may be just letting you learn a little bit
24:56in the quiet side.
24:58Sometimes we get running so fast
24:59we can't hear what God is saying.
25:02And maybe God's allowing you in this period of time
25:05as you're hearing his voice
25:06may be a little clearer now
25:07that things have gotten uncomplicated.
25:11And the only reason he's doing that
25:12is because he's got some great work for you to do.
25:14And he has his own way of preparing us.
25:17He does it in all of our lives
25:19just as he did in the life of Moses.

26:25And now, with one last word for today's program,
26:28here is Dr. Jeremiah.
26:30Moses' faith grew step by step.
26:33It seemed the more he saw God do,
26:36the more he was able to trust God.
26:37And, you know, our faith can grow the same way.
26:41When God does something great in our lives,
26:43we should use it as a stepping stone
26:45to trust God for even more.
26:48Faith gives birth to even greater faith.
26:52But we have to start at the beginning
26:54by trusting God for salvation through faith in Christ.
26:58The more we grow in Christ,
27:00the greater our faith becomes.
