01:38Even if they get some of the details wrong,
01:41many people in our culture are familiar with the story of Joshua and the Battle of Jericho.
01:47One of the most overlooked facts about how the walls of Jericho came tumbling down
01:52is revealed in the biblical text.
01:55I'll preach on it in today's message.
01:58The walls came down not by strength, but by faith.
02:04Hello, I'm David Jeremiah, and my message today is titled,

04:02By faith, the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days.
04:10By faith, the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe
04:17when she had received the spies with peace.
04:22Here we are introduced to two characters, Joshua and Rahab.
04:27Joshua was a Jewish general.
04:31Rahab was a Gentile prostitute.
04:36Joshua was a member of the covenant nation.
04:39Rahab was a foreigner.
04:42Joshua was a conqueror, and Rahab was among the conquered.
04:47But as different as they were,
04:49and as diverse as they look in our understanding,
04:52the one thing that causes them to show up together in the 11th chapter of Hebrews
04:57is they both are rewarded for their faith.
05:01Remember, Hebrews 11 is the faith chapter
05:04where people are put into the hall of faith because they believed God.
05:10Let's begin, first of all, with Joshua surrounding the walls of Jericho.
05:16Hebrews 11, 30 says,
05:18By faith, these walls came down.
05:22And if you go back to Joshua and the sixth chapter,
05:25you will discover in the second verse
05:27the promise of faith that was made to Joshua.
05:31And the Lord said to Joshua,
05:33See, I have given Jericho into your hand,
05:38its king and the mighty men of valor.
05:42God told the general that he was going to win
05:45even before the war started.
05:49It was going to be up to Joshua just to believe God
05:52and do what God told him to do,
05:54and victory was already in his hands.
05:57How many of you know we've been given a similar promise as God's people?
06:01The Bible says,
06:02Yea, in all these things we are more than conquerors
06:05through him who loved us.
06:08Which tells us that if we live by faith as Joshua did, we win.
06:13We are conquerors.
06:14If we do what God tells us to do,
06:16the victory is already in our hands.
06:18And we should have confidence in the promise of this almighty God
06:22that we serve.
06:23Let me remind you again that all faith is based on a promise from God.
06:30Faith is a nebulous thought to most people,
06:33but it is a very simple concept.
06:35God said it.
06:37You believe it and you act upon it.
06:40When you do that, you are exercising your faith.
06:43It's not anything more than that.
06:45It's not anything less than that.
06:47That faith is believing and acting upon God's word.
06:52Now, the promise of faith to Joshua was,
06:54Joshua, I'm going to give Jericho into your hand.
06:59Notice, at this point, God doesn't explain how he's going to do it,
07:02and that's going to get very interesting.
07:05Here is the promise of faith.
07:06Now, here's the plan of faith.
07:08In verses 3 through 5 of Joshua 6, we read these words.
07:11You shall march around the city, all you men of war,
07:15and you shall go all around the city once,
07:18and this you shall do for six days.
07:20And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of ram's horns before the ark,
07:25but the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times,
07:29and the priests shall blow the trumpets,
07:31and it shall come to pass when they make a long blast with the ram's horn,
07:34and when you hear the sound of the trumpet,
07:37that all the people shall shout with a great shout,
07:39and the wall of the city will fall down flat,
07:42and the people shall go up, every man straight before him.
07:46Now, I would love to have been with Joshua
07:48when he explained this military strategy to his leaders.
07:52I can hear them saying,
07:53we're going to do what?
07:56Now, if you study this carefully,
07:58you will notice there are some principles of faith in this instruction.
08:02There are actually four of them that I've discovered.
08:04Let me give them to you.
08:05First of all, there's the principle of silence.
08:08In Joshua 6, 10, God says to Joshua,
08:12now Joshua commanded the people, saying,
08:15you shall not shout or make any noise with your voice,
08:18nor shall a word proceed out of your mouth
08:20until the day I say to you, shout, then you shall shout.
08:25God was telling his people through Joshua
08:27that they were to march around the city walls once a day for six days,
08:31seven times on the seventh day,
08:33while keeping completely silent.
08:36How many of you know that silence is loud?
08:40Have you ever noticed that?
08:41And the longer the silence goes, the louder it is?
08:45Now, here, I'm going to dig in a little bit here.
08:48Have you ever had a misunderstanding with your wife?
08:52And you're in the car?
08:54Maybe you're on a long trip.
08:58And all of a sudden, you realize you've just gone 500 miles
09:01and you haven't said a word to each other?
09:03Now, I wouldn't know anything about that,
09:04but I hear that happens, you know.
09:09How many of you know silence is loud?
09:12And the longer it goes, the louder it is.
09:16God was teaching his people the principle of silence.
09:19Can you imagine the thoughts that were going through their minds?
09:22I mean, the first day maybe wasn't quite so bad,
09:24but the second day and then the third.
09:26And every time they would come back home at night,
09:28they would look up and there were the walls still there.
09:32And so, isn't it interesting?
09:33They didn't have a chance to share their anxieties with each other on the march.
09:38They had to keep all this inside and deal with it individually before God
09:42as God was working in their hearts
09:44and preparing them for what he was about to do,
09:47the principle of silence.
09:48Then there's the principle of submission.
09:52Verses 13 through 15 in Joshua 5
09:55give us some basic information we need
09:58to comprehend what's going on here.
09:59It says,
10:00And it came to pass when Joshua was by Jericho
10:03that he lifted his eyes and looked,
10:06and behold, a man stood opposite him
10:07with his sword drawn in his hand.
10:09And Joshua went to him and he said to him,
10:11Are you for us?
10:12Are you for our adversaries?
10:14And he said,
10:15No, but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.
10:19And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped
10:22and said to him,
10:23What does my Lord say to his servant?
10:26And the commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua,
10:29Take your sandals off your foot
10:30for the place where you stand is holy.
10:32And Joshua did so.
10:34Now, we often don't remember this part of the story.
10:37Before Joshua ever gave orders to his people,
10:40he got orders from his commander, didn't he?
10:42The captain of the Lord's army met Joshua in chapter 5
10:47so that Joshua, who was the captain of the Israeli army,
10:51would know what to do.
10:52And just as Joshua had submitted to his captain,
10:55now the people of God are going to submit to Joshua.
10:58There's a chain of command here, and there always is.
11:01I dare not tell you to do what God has not told me
11:05to tell you to do.
11:06And it better come from the Word of God
11:07if you're going to be sure.
11:08There's a chain of command in our walk with the Lord.
11:12And verse 8 of Joshua 6 says,
11:15So it was when Joshua had spoken to the people
11:18that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets
11:21of ram's horns before the Lord advanced
11:23and blew the trumpets,
11:25and the ark of the covenant of the Lord followed them.
11:28Joshua submitted first, totally committed to do God's will
11:31before he knew all the details.
11:33And here's the question we ask ourselves
11:36as we talk about the will of God today in our own lives.
11:40Have I ever submitted to God's will
11:42even before I have known what it was?
11:47We often say,
11:48what's the key to the will of God?
11:51How can I know the will of God?
11:53Well, the first thing you have to do
11:54is be willing to do it before you know what it is.
11:57Well, you say,
11:58Pastor, that's not rational.
12:00Exactly.
12:01It's spiritual.
12:03That's the way God works.
12:05God says,
12:06I want you to follow me.
12:08Here's our contract between you and me.
12:11Sign it at the bottom.
12:12But, Lord, there's no words on the page.
12:14Sign it at the bottom,
12:15and I'll fill it in later.
12:19Whoa, nobody would ever do that in the world today.
12:21I mean, we get in enough trouble
12:22signing it when we know what's on the page.
12:26But God says,
12:27no, I want you to trust me.
12:29I want you to sign this document,
12:30and I'll fill in the details in due time.
12:33But it's important for me to know
12:35that you are willing to do
12:37what I have called you to do
12:38before I give you the content.
12:42The principle of silence,
12:43the principle of submission.
12:44Notice, thirdly, the principle of strategy.
12:47I want you to get a mental picture with me
12:49of how the Israelites were lining up around the city.
12:51First of all, there's no way
12:53that almost 2 1⁄2 to 3 million people
12:56could march around the city at once.
12:59I mean, there was a representative group
13:01of the Israelites.
13:02We're told it was, first of all, the soldiers,
13:04and probably there was a representation
13:06from each of the 12 tribes.
13:08Out in front of this march were the soldiers,
13:11then the priests with the horns,
13:13and then the Ark of the Covenant in the middle,
13:16and then more soldiers,
13:17and then some more people.
13:18And there was a definite purpose for this order
13:21as they walked around the city.
13:23The formation was designed to strike terror
13:25into the hearts of the people in Jericho.
13:28We know that the city was locked up tight
13:31and that the people in Jericho
13:32were already afraid of the Israelites
13:34because of what they had heard.
13:36And then one day, this guy's walking
13:38on the wall of Jericho, and he looks out,
13:41and he sees this group marching toward the city.
13:43It didn't look like much,
13:45and they were carrying this big old odd box
13:47right in the middle of their parade
13:49on the shoulders of some of the paraders.
13:53And they march around the city once,
13:55and they leave.
13:56And they come back the next day at the same time,
13:58and they march around and go home,
13:59and you can't hear a word
14:00except the footfall of them marching.
14:02No sound from their mouth,
14:04no words between them.
14:06And then the seventh day comes,
14:08and they show up early.
14:10And on this day, they march not once,
14:13but seven times around the wall.
14:14I gotta tell you, folks,
14:16this was psychological warfare.
14:19And they were talking to each other,
14:20what are these crazy Jews doing?
14:22They're marching around our city.
14:23They're not saying a word, anything.
14:26And they're, what are they up to?
14:27And already the battle was falling
14:30into the hands of the Israelites
14:31because they had just,
14:33they had brought such terror
14:35into the hearts of the inhabitants of Jericho.
14:39And finally, there's the principle of spirituality.
14:41Don't miss this.
14:43In the middle of this parade,
14:44the people saw this huge box
14:46being carried on the shoulders of the priests.
14:48They didn't know that God was teaching his people
14:51the mighty lesson
14:52that at the center of every victory
14:54is the Lord God himself.
14:56Because you see, the Ark of the Covenant
14:58was placed at the very center of the parade
15:01to show everyone that God was in the midst of his people.
15:04The Ark of the Covenant was the one piece of furniture
15:07from the tabernacle and the temple
15:09that more than any other piece of furniture
15:12represented the presence of Almighty God.
15:16The Ark of the Covenant was a holy piece of furniture.
15:20You can read the story of what happened
15:22when it was mistreated.
15:24So right in the middle of the march,
15:27the soldiers, a few people from the priests and the horns,
15:30and then this big Ark of the Covenant
15:32on the shoulders of the people
15:34as they marched around,
15:35followed by some more soldiers and more people.
15:38And what this said to the Israelites was,
15:40make sure you keep God in the center of your parade.
15:44Make sure you keep the presence of God
15:46focused in your thinking.
15:48God will give you victory
15:49if you keep him in the place of honor,
15:53if you keep him in the place where he belongs.
15:56And we must never forget today, men and women,
15:58that our only hope for power in our church
16:00is wrapped up in the presence of the Almighty among us.
16:04Just as the Ark of the Covenant
16:06was in the center of the parade,
16:07let us covenant together as the people of God
16:10to experience God at the center of our worship.
16:14We will keep God's presence through worship
16:16and the study of his word
16:18and the understanding of who he is in this church.
16:20When God is the center of what we do,
16:22we are on our way to victory.
16:24If we move him to the perimeter
16:26and we get caught up
16:27in all of the market-driven stuff
16:29that's going on in the name of church today,
16:31we have no reason to believe
16:32that God has any interest
16:34in what's happening when we gather together.
16:37But when we put God at the center of the parade
16:39and when they say,
16:41what's going on over there?
16:42Well, God is at work.
16:44God is at work among his people.
16:47Then let me give you some of the precepts of faith.
16:50The promise of faith,
16:51the plan of faith, the principle.
16:52Now, here's three things I've learned already
16:55from Joshua and his entrance into the hall of faith.
16:57Number one, God's ways are not man's ways.
17:00Amen?
17:01Isn't that true?
17:02God's ways are past finding out.
17:04Don't ever stereotype God.
17:06Don't ever say,
17:07well, God, you did it that way for them.
17:08Why can't you do that for us?
17:10He's not obligated to do for you
17:12what he's done for someone else.
17:14He's got a better plan for you.
17:15Don't be running all through your life thinking,
17:17well, God, you did this for them.
17:19Why don't you?
17:19Because God has something else for you.
17:21If you get so fixated on what he's doing for someone else,
17:24you'll miss what he wants to do for you.
17:26His ways are past finding out.
17:28So, just accept them as they come
17:32and know that God comes with his ways.
17:35God's ways are not man's ways.
17:37Number two, God's weapons are not man's weapons.
17:42God can take down a city with trumpets,
17:44voice, and marching.
17:45God can take Gideon's army of 32,000,
17:48pair it down to 300, and go and win the war.
17:51The Bible says that the weapons have to be different
17:53because we fight a spiritual war.
17:562 Corinthians 10, 4 says,
17:57for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal,
18:00but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.
18:05God's ways are not our ways.
18:07God's weapons are not man's weapons.
18:09God's work is not man's work.
18:12Joshua 6, 16.
18:14And the seventh time it happened,
18:16when the priests blew the trumpets,
18:18Joshua said to the people,
18:19shout, for the Lord has given you the city.
18:23And the victory truly was the Lord's,
18:25and it was accomplished by faith.
18:27And that's why you read in Hebrews 11, 30,
18:28by faith the walls of Jericho fell down
18:31after they were encircled seven days.
18:33And that's why Joshua got his name in that chapter.
18:35He believed God to do something extraordinary.
18:39And in his faith, God accomplished the task.
18:44But I've left some time to tell you
18:46about the other person in this story,
18:47this woman by the name of Rahab.
18:50The first part of this lesson
18:52is Joshua surrounding the walls of Jericho.
18:54The second part is Rahab living on the wall of Jericho.
18:59The thing that unites these two people,
19:01apart from their faith, is the wall.
19:05When Joshua was preparing to fill God's commandment
19:07to conquer Canaan,
19:09he sent two spies into the land of Jericho
19:11to check it out.
19:12I know you know this story, but let me refresh you.
19:15Once the two spies entered the city of Jericho,
19:17the Bible says that God led them
19:19to a house of a woman named Rahab.
19:22According to the Bible, Rahab was an Amorite.
19:26Notice, hold on to that term.
19:27She was an Amorite.
19:28She also was a prostitute.
19:32The Bible calls her a harlot,
19:34which is the Bible's nice word for a prostitute.
19:39Rahab hid the spies in her condo on the wall
19:42and even lied to the king in order to protect them.
19:47And so, while faith was being expressed
19:50outside the wall of Jericho during the seven days,
19:53faith was also growing in the heart
19:56of one unlikely woman who lived on the wall
19:59that was about to come down.
20:02Hebrews 11, 31 says,
20:04By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish
20:08with those who did not believe
20:10when she had received the spies with peace.
20:13Now, how did that happen?
20:14Notice the confession of her faith.
20:16What you may not know about Rahab
20:18was that God had been working in her heart
20:20before Joshua ever got near the city of Jericho.
20:24She has now hid these two spies in her house
20:28at her own risk.
20:30And the Scripture says, Joshua 2, 8 through 11,
20:33Now, before they lay down, she came up to them.
20:36They were up on the roof of her house
20:37and said to the men,
20:40I know that the Lord has given you Jericho, the land,
20:44that the terror of you has fallen on us.
20:47I guess so.
20:47They've just watched this thing happen
20:50or they're watching it happen.
20:51And that all of the inhabitants of the land
20:54are faint-hearted because of you.
20:56How did she know that?
20:57For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water
21:00of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt.
21:03And we have heard what you did
21:05to the two kings of the Amorites.
21:08She had relatives among the group
21:10that Israel took out right across the river
21:14who were on the other side of the Jordan,
21:17Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed.
21:19And as soon as we heard these things,
21:21our hearts melted.
21:22Neither did there remain any more courage
21:24in anyone because of you.
21:25Now, watch this.
21:26For the Lord your God is God in heaven
21:30above and on earth beneath.
21:35Rahab heard the report
21:39of the great victory of Jehovah God
21:41and she became a believer.
21:43The confession of her faith.
21:45Now, the covenant of her faith.
21:46In Joshua 2, 12 through 14 and 17 through 21,
21:50we learned that Rahab was willing
21:51to take care of the two spies.
21:53But she asked them for something in return.
21:55She said,
21:57in return for not revealing your business here,
21:59I want you to take care of me
22:01when the judgment comes on this city.
22:04The two men said to her,
22:05if you will not tell of our being here,
22:07if you will protect us,
22:08when the judgment of Jericho comes,
22:09we will protect you.
22:11We want you to hang a scarlet cord
22:13in the window on the outside
22:14of the wall of the city.
22:16When we see that cord during the judgment,
22:18we will protect you and keep you alive.
22:21Now, notice the completion of her faith.
22:24Joshua 6, 16 and 17.
22:26Let me just read the story.
22:28Joshua said to the people,
22:29Now the city shall be doomed
22:30by the Lord through destruction,
22:32and all who are in it,
22:33only Rahab the harlot shall live,
22:36she and all who are with her in the house,
22:38because she hid the messengers that we sent.
22:40Verse 22,
22:41But Joshua had said to the two men
22:43who had spied out the country,
22:44Go into the harlot's house,
22:47and from there bring out the woman
22:49and all that she has as you swore to her.
22:51And the young men who had been spies
22:53went in and brought out Rahab,
22:55her father, her mother, her brothers,
22:58and all that she had.
22:59So they brought out all her relatives
23:01and left them outside the camp of Israel,
23:03and Joshua spared Rahab the harlot,
23:06her father's household,
23:07and all that she had.
23:08So she dwells in Israel to this day
23:11because she hid the messengers
23:12whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
23:14I don't care where you are today.
23:16This is one great story.
23:19When Rahab was spared from destruction,
23:21listen to this.
23:22The story's not over.
23:24She was absorbed into the nation of Israel.
23:28And she married a Jewish man
23:30by the name of Salmon.
23:33And we read about Salmon
23:35in Matthew chapter 1, verses 5 and 6.
23:37Look at this verse up on the screen.
23:41Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab.
23:44Now, begot means they had him as a son.
23:49Salmon and Rahab had Boaz as a son.
23:52And Boaz married Ruth,
23:55and they had Obed as a son.
23:57And Obed begot Jesse,
23:59and Jesse begot David the king,
24:01and David the king begot Solomon.
24:06Rahab believed God.
24:08She had faith in what she knew to be true
24:11from what she had heard,
24:12and God had given her the faith to believe.
24:15And now this woman of ill repute,
24:18forgiven of her sin,
24:20is merged into the line of descent
24:23that runs all the way from her son
24:30to the son of Almighty God,
24:32the Lord Jesus Christ himself.
24:35If you don't get anything else out of that,
24:37let me tell you something.
24:38No matter how low you've been,
24:40there's no limit to how high you can go.
24:42If God forgives you and cleanses you
24:44of whatever it is you have done
24:46that has caused you to be separated from him,
24:49he can lift you up and honor you
24:51as he did this woman.
24:53So let me ask you this question.
24:55Is there any reason why you shouldn't trust
24:57Jesus Christ as your Savior?
24:58You say, how do I do that?
25:00The same way, by faith.
25:02Faith is believing what is taught about Jesus Christ.
25:05Faith is not waiting until you have a feeling.
25:08Faith is making a decision.
25:10There came a day in Rahab's life
25:12when having heard what she heard,
25:14she decided it was true and she believed it.
25:17So what's keeping you from putting your trust in him today?
25:22Make the decision.

26:26And now, with one last word for today's program,
26:30here is Dr. Jeremiah.
26:32Courage and faith go together
26:34because it takes courage
26:35to believe in something we can't see.
26:38Joshua couldn't see how the walls of Jericho
26:41would come down,
26:42so he exercised courageous faith.
26:46You may be facing something
26:47that you can't see either.
26:49If so, exercise courageous faith.
26:53For example, it's possible you can't see
26:55how a relationship with Jesus Christ
26:57could change your life.
26:59You should put your faith in him
27:01and let him show you.
27:02And to help you do that,
27:04I would love to send you two free gifts.
