01:12you can say to this mountain, move from here to there, and it will move.
01:19Nothing will be impossible for you.
01:41Hello, I'm David Jeremiah, welcoming you to the last and probably most important message in my series from Hebrews chapter
01:4911,
01:50called Ordinary People, Extraordinary Faith.
01:54We've studied amazing examples of faith demonstrated by some of the heroes of the biblical story.
02:01But today's message contains a critical point for anyone who desires to have heroic faith.
02:08All of God's heroes are ordinary heroes.
02:12In fact, that's the title of today's message, just ordinary heroes.
02:18By ordinary, I mean that faith is no respecter of persons.
02:23One of the greatest errors in our thinking is that we aren't special enough to have great faith.
02:29But today, you're going to see that you don't have to be a Bible character to have the kind of
02:34faith they did.
02:35You'll see why if you'll join me for today's edition of Turning Point.
02:41There is no greater expression of God's faithfulness and power than creation itself.
02:48And there is no greater time than now to refocus on our Heavenly Father.

04:07We have been looking together at the 11th chapter of the book of Hebrews,
04:11Hebrews, which you know as the Hall of Faith in the New Testament.
04:16Here in this chapter, we meet people who have distinguished themselves because of their faith in Almighty God.
04:25Now, if you've read the chapter already, you know that there are 16 names listed in Hebrews 11.
04:32We began with Abel and followed up Abel with the man Enoch.
04:38And then we studied Noah.
04:40And after Noah came Abraham.
04:42And after Abraham came Sarah.
04:44And after Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob, and Joseph.
04:48And then we studied Moses and Rahab.
04:51Of the 16 names in the book of Hebrews chapter 11,
04:56those are the first 10.
05:00The last six are in our message today.
05:04Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, and Samuel.
05:11In summarizing the lives of these people,
05:15the writer gathers his thoughts together and focuses on their accomplishments of faith.
05:21He begins, first of all, with the people of faith.
05:23He begins to reminisce by mentioning heroes from the Old Testament.
05:28And he goes into three different periods of Old Testament history to get his heroes.
05:34The first period of history is the period of the judges.
05:37Heroes from the judges.
05:39This is what it says in verse 32 of Hebrews 11.
05:42And what more shall I say?
05:44Which in the language of the New Testament means I don't have enough time to say what I want to
05:49say.
05:49I understand that.
05:51That's a preacher's problem.
05:52What more shall I say?
05:54For the time would fail me to tell you of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah.
06:01What do all four of those people have in common?
06:03They were all judges during the period of judges.
06:08The Bible says that during the period of the judges,
06:11every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
06:14Does that sound familiar?
06:15Kind of like everybody had their own agenda.
06:17They did whatever they wanted to do.
06:19And God put judges in the midst of them to hold them and focus them.
06:23And he lists four of them.
06:24The first one is the man named Gideon.
06:26Gideon is a man who was remembered for his dreams.
06:30God gave Gideon some wonderful visions and dreams.
06:34And Gideon was the most unlikely candidate for the hall of faith.
06:37I remember the first time I ever preached on Gideon and realized that when God called him
06:42to be a champion, Gideon was hiding behind the wine press.
06:47And God walked up to him through his, I'm sorry, and God said,
06:50Oh, mighty man of valor.
06:54And I'm thinking Gideon probably said,
06:56Who's he talking about?
06:57Who is not me?
06:59And I always have thought this.
07:00This is a wonderful thought for me that God loves to take us where we are
07:04and make us what he knows we can become.
07:07Gideon wasn't much when God got a hold of him.
07:10God turned him into a champion.
07:12Well, Gideon's followed in the list by a man named Barak
07:16who doesn't bring a whole lot more to the table than Gideon did.
07:19Barak is obeying Deborah.
07:22And he goes forth to meet the great army of Sisera.
07:25Sisera was a general, and he had 900 chariots of iron and thousands of troops.
07:32And Barak went against him with 10,000 men that were chosen
07:35from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun, just two of Israel's tribes.
07:40And then add to the list Samson.
07:42And you've got to ask yourself,
07:43How in the world did Samson get on a list of faith?
07:46I mean, Samson, he blew it every way you can blow it, didn't he?
07:50I mean, he destroyed his testimony.
07:52He finally had a woman who got a hold of him by the name of Delilah,
07:56and she found out the secret of his strength.
07:59And you know the rest of the story.
08:01He lost his eyesight, and he was relegated to an object of derision
08:08among the people of Israel until the last moment of his life.
08:12If Gideon was remembered for his dreams and Barak for his daring,
08:17Samson's remembered for his defiance, because in the last moment of his life,
08:21the Bible says he had someone put him in a position where he could
08:25hold on to the pillars of the idolatry temple.
08:30And in one last moment of strength, his hair had unnoticeably grown back.
08:35He took hold of those two pillars, and he pulled them together.
08:38And the Bible says that Samson killed more in his death than he did in his life.
08:44He brought this all down.
08:45I mean, he figured, this is the one last thing I can do.
08:47I can destroy some more enemies of God who hate God
08:50and are trying to destroy his people.
08:52And he went out in defiance.
08:54I have to believe that's why he got in the hall of faith.
08:58And then there's one last person by the name of Jephthah.
09:00Again, I got to tell you, my impression when I go through these stories
09:04is how unlikely these people are to be included in God's list of faithful men and women.
09:11Do you remember the story of Jephthah?
09:13Most people remember Jephthah because of his vow.
09:16It's Jephthah's vow.
09:17Whenever you decide to make a vow, before you do it, go read this passage,
09:22because you don't want to make a vow unless you know what you're vowing.
09:25Judges 11 31 says,
09:27Then it will be that whatever—this is his vow.
09:30Then it will be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me
09:34when I return in peace from the people of Ammon
09:36shall surely be the Lord's,
09:38and I will offer it up to him as a burnt offering.
09:43Fast forward.
09:45When Jephthah came to his house,
09:47there was his daughter coming out to meet him,
09:51and she was his only child,
09:53and besides her he had neither son nor daughter.
09:57Can you imagine that moment?
10:00You say, what happened?
10:02It's in the book of Judges.
10:03You can go home and read it this afternoon, all right?
10:05Find out what happened.
10:08In spite of his foolish vow,
10:10God used Jephthah in a very special way
10:12to denote the power of God in Israel.
10:15Now, these four men served during a period of time
10:20when there was no king in Israel.
10:22They served demonstrating courage,
10:25courage that it takes to stand up for what is right
10:28when nobody else is standing up for what is right.
10:31And are we not getting a chance
10:32to experience some of that in this culture today?
10:35To stand up for what is right
10:37when everybody around us doesn't think that's important anymore?
10:40These judges are honored
10:42because when everybody else was going south,
10:45they kept going north.
10:47And God honored them for their faith
10:49and encourages us by their testimony.
10:52They were not perfect men.
10:54They were weak men that God made strong.
10:57Now he goes to the second category.
10:59From the judges,
11:00he gives us a representation of the kings.
11:03Hebrews 11, 32 says,
11:04And time would fail to tell of David.
11:08And David is a representation of the kings of Israel.
11:12He is chosen to represent this period.
11:14And of course, David was a champion from his boyhood.
11:17When he was just a kid,
11:18he was fighting with lions and bears.
11:21And then when he was a teenager,
11:23he took out Goliath, a nine-foot-six-inch giant,
11:27and all he had to do it with was a slingshot.
11:30And you know that whole story,
11:32but let me read you the little speech
11:33that David gave to Goliath
11:35when he stood in front of him.
11:36Here's what he said to the giant.
11:38This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand,
11:42and I will strike you and take your head from you,
11:46that all the earth may know
11:48that there is a God in Israel.
11:50And David was good,
11:52and he did what he said he would do.
11:55This little teenage boy going up against a giant
11:58that bellowed out his curses against Israel,
12:02and he took him out.
12:04It became so popular, as you know,
12:06that they even wrote a song about David,
12:08and it was on the hit parade for many years in Israel.
12:11Saul has slain his thousands,
12:13and David his ten thousands.
12:15And then David was anointed king.
12:18In fact, he was anointed king three times.
12:21Did you know that?
12:22Before he finally ascended the throne,
12:23there were three ceremonies to anoint David.
12:25It seemed to David as if he would never become king.
12:29During all that time while Saul was still reigning
12:31and David was the king in waiting,
12:34I learned this week something that I had never known before,
12:37a statistic that I had never, ever seen before,
12:39that during the time that David was waiting
12:43to become the king of Israel,
12:4524 different times King Saul
12:47either sought to kill him himself
12:49or get somebody else to do it in his behalf.
12:5124 attempts were made on David's life.
12:56He spent his whole time as a fugitive,
12:58running from here to there,
13:00just trying to stay alive,
13:02waiting for the moment when God would allow him
13:05finally to become the king of Israel.
13:08David endured all these things, and he continued.
13:12He rose from the judges and he rose from the kings.
13:15Notice, thirdly, he rose from the prophets.
13:17It says that time would fail me
13:22to tell you of Samuel and the prophets.
13:25Now, let me tell you about Samuel.
13:27Samuel's really a key person in the Old Testament.
13:30Here's why.
13:30Samuel was the last of the judges
13:33and the first of the prophets.
13:35He was the last of the judges
13:37and the first of the prophets.
13:38And as the prophet,
13:40he was the one who anointed Israel's first king.
13:42So he is the cement that holds those periods of time together,
13:46the last of the judges,
13:48the first of the prophets,
13:49and the anointer of King David as the king of Israel.
13:54So the first thing that the writer of Hebrews wants us to know
13:57is that God used people from lots of different places
14:00and different time periods.
14:02He lists these for us in that one verse.
14:05Now he's going to make a change here
14:08in how he approaches this subject.
14:09He's going to go from the people of faith,
14:12the ten people that we mentioned,
14:14to the performances of faith.
14:16And here's what the writer's going to do now.
14:18He's going to go through a list of things
14:20that these men and women of faith of the Old Testament did.
14:23He's not going to tell us their name,
14:25but he's going to assume
14:26that we know something about the Old Testament,
14:28so we'll be able to figure out who it is most of the time.
14:32Apparently, back in those days,
14:33the people to whom the writer of Hebrews was writing
14:35knew the Old Testament.
14:38And in case you don't feel like you know the Old Testament,
14:40I'll tell you who they are as we go along.
14:42But I want you just to note how carefully
14:44this is laid out for us,
14:46one action after another.
14:48We've moved now from those who have taken the action,
14:52and we're going to look at the action that they took.
14:55Here we notice, first of all,
14:57there were those who were victorious over their enemies,
15:00and by faith they defeated kingdoms.
15:04It says here they subdued kingdoms.
15:06That's the first word.
15:07By faith they defeated kingdoms.
15:09Notice the second one.
15:10By faith they did righteous works.
15:13By faith they subdued kingdoms,
15:14and they worked righteousness.
15:16What works did they do?
15:17Oh, there's so many.
15:19I can just represent them by a few interesting things.
15:23Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal,
15:25remember that, on the mountain, and defeated them.
15:28And Elisha healed Naaman,
15:30and that was an act of righteousness.
15:32And the prophets preached the word,
15:34and Daniel refused to eat the king's meat
15:36and drink the king's wine
15:38so that he could be faithful to God.
15:41And Joseph in Egypt ruled in righteousness,
15:44and Esther in Persia ruled in righteousness,
15:47and Daniel in Babylon ruled in righteousness,
15:50and David in Israel ruled in righteousness.
15:532 Samuel 8, 15 says,
15:55David reigned over all Israel,
15:57and he administered justice and righteousness
15:59for all the people.
16:02They subdued kingdoms,
16:03and they worked righteousness.
16:06The third thing we read is
16:07they discovered the promises of God.
16:09Notice again in your Bible,
16:11I'm just taking these phrases
16:12one at a time as they appear.
16:14They destroyed kingdoms,
16:16they did righteous works,
16:17and they discovered the promises of God.
16:20Now watch this.
16:21Whenever the people of the Old Testament
16:22were in trouble,
16:23whenever they got in a tough place,
16:24whenever they were in a corner
16:25or their back was against the wall,
16:28they would go grab hold of one of God's promises
16:30and hang on to it for dear life.
16:31Have you ever done that?
16:33Have you ever said,
16:33Lord, I don't know where this is going
16:34or what I'm supposed to do,
16:35but this is what I read in your book.
16:37And by the way,
16:39I don't know how God does this.
16:41I don't even know how to explain this,
16:43but if you're in a regular reading program
16:45of the Word of God,
16:47inevitably you will find that on the day
16:49when you need a promise,
16:50it's in your reading assignment.
16:52And you read that assignment,
16:53and you read that promise,
16:55and you think,
16:55how did he know?
16:59If you're just in no reading program at all,
17:02just sort of jumping around,
17:03you might find a promise here and there,
17:05but when you're in a reading program
17:06and you're reading through the Word of God,
17:08God has a way of just preparing your heart
17:10for whatever you need.
17:11And the Bible says
17:12that whenever these Old Testament people
17:14got into difficulty,
17:15they would just grab hold of a promise.
17:17How many of you know we're unfaithful?
17:19He's not.
17:20We don't always keep our promises, do we?
17:22We make a lot of promises to God
17:23and hope in our heart.
17:25He doesn't keep track of all of them.
17:28But he never, ever fails
17:30to keep his promise to us.
17:32By faith, they destroyed kingdoms,
17:34did righteous works,
17:35discovered the promises of God.
17:36Number four, they defeated lions.
17:39They stopped the mouths of lions.
17:42Daniel 6, 22 says,
17:43My God sent his angel
17:46and shut the lion's mouth
17:48so that they have not hurt me.
17:51And I remember as a little kid
17:53growing up in Sunday school,
17:54that was one of our favorite stories,
17:55Daniel in the lion's den.
17:57And have you seen the pictures
17:58of Daniel taking a nap
18:00with his head on the lion,
18:01you know, just kind of laying there in the den?
18:04The Bible says that
18:05when he was thrown into the lion's den
18:07because of his faithfulness to God,
18:08Almighty God moved in
18:10and shut the mouth of the lion.
18:13By faith, they destroyed kingdoms,
18:15displayed righteousness,
18:16discovered promises,
18:17defeated lions.
18:18Then number five,
18:20by faith, they defied fire.
18:22Daniel's three friends,
18:24Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,
18:25thrown into the fiery furnace
18:26because they wouldn't bow down
18:28before Nebuchadnezzar's statue.
18:30And the Bible says
18:31after they threw him into the furnace
18:32and it was heated seven times hotter
18:34than it had ever been heated,
18:35the king somehow looked into the fire
18:37and there were these three guys
18:39and there was one other person.
18:40There were four.
18:42And the fourth was like
18:43unto the Son of God.
18:45And we were reminded
18:46when we studied that,
18:47were we not,
18:48that God doesn't promise
18:49to keep us out of the fire.
18:50He just says he'll go in there with us
18:52and be with us
18:53through whatever experience
18:54we're going through.
18:56And by faith,
18:57they destroyed kingdoms
18:58and displayed righteousness
19:00and discovered promises
19:01and defeated lions
19:03and defied the fire
19:04and they dodged the sword.
19:05It says they escaped the sword.
19:07And this is in reference
19:08to an attack on Israel
19:09by the Amalekites.
19:11And the Bible tells us
19:12that Moses went up
19:14into a mountain
19:14to intercede for them.
19:15And remember,
19:16when his arms got tired,
19:17they held his arms up
19:19and whenever his arms were up,
19:21the Israelites were in control
19:22and whenever his arms went down,
19:24they got defeated.
19:26And the Bible says
19:27that they dodged the sword.
19:30And by faith,
19:31they developed strength.
19:32I love this one.
19:33Out of weakness,
19:33were made strong,
19:35became valiant in battle,
19:36turned to flight,
19:37the armies of the aliens.
19:39All three of those statements
19:40go together
19:40and they remind us
19:42that all God's giants
19:43have been weak men
19:44who just did great things for God.
19:46We sometimes,
19:47well, I'm not capable
19:48of being a giant for God.
19:50Nobody ever was
19:51and ever will be
19:52because you don't get
19:53to be one of God's giants
19:54because you're something special.
19:56You get to be a giant of God
19:58when you recognize
19:59your own weakness
20:00and allow God
20:01to move into your weakness
20:02and make you strong.
20:03They destroyed kingdoms.
20:04They displayed righteousness.
20:06They discovered promises.
20:07They defeated lions.
20:08They defied fire.
20:09They dodged the sword.
20:10They developed strength
20:11and they disabled death.
20:13It says here
20:14that women received their dead
20:16raised to life again.
20:18And there are only two occasions
20:20of that in the Old Testament
20:21that I'm aware of.
20:23First was Elijah
20:24who brought back to life
20:25the child of the widow of Zarephath
20:27in 1 Kings chapter 17.
20:30And the second was Elijah's successor,
20:33Elisha,
20:34who did the same thing
20:35for the son of the Shunammite woman.
20:37And that's in 2 Kings chapter 4.
20:41So all of these people
20:43who did all of these great things
20:45are listed for us
20:46in these first few verses.
20:47But I want you to just
20:49take a breath now
20:49and I want you to join me
20:51for the most important part
20:52of this passage
20:53because most of us
20:55don't consider ourselves
20:56to be in the first part of this.
20:59You see,
21:00the first part of this chapter
21:02is about people
21:03who were victorious
21:04over their enemies.
21:06But the last part of it
21:08is about people
21:09who were victims
21:09of their enemies.
21:11And I want you to notice
21:12that we're about to learn
21:14that the faith
21:15that God gives us
21:16to be strong
21:16is the same faith
21:18that he gives us
21:19to persevere
21:20during difficult times.
21:22In fact,
21:23it's so interesting
21:24when you're reading
21:24the 11th chapter
21:25and you get to the 35th verse.
21:28It says,
21:29women received their dead
21:30raised to life again.
21:32And you need to draw
21:33a little line in that verse
21:34because he's about to change
21:35the storyline.
21:37He says,
21:38others,
21:40others were tortured.
21:43And it goes through
21:44this whole list of things
21:45that happened.
21:46Who are the others?
21:47They're the others
21:48that God didn't use
21:50to drive forward
21:52some triumphant victory.
21:53But who were the victims of,
21:55well, let's just read
21:57what happened to them.
21:58Some of them,
21:59we are told,
22:00were tortured
22:01because of their faith.
22:04They would not accept
22:06deliverance
22:06that they might obtain
22:07a better resurrection.
22:09In other words,
22:09some of the early Christians
22:11were given the option,
22:12if you will bow down
22:13to Caesar,
22:14if you will put some incense
22:16on his altar,
22:17you can walk away
22:19from persecution.
22:20And the Scripture says
22:21they chose to be tortured
22:23rather than to be
22:25giving up their faith
22:27in Almighty God.
22:28The Bible says
22:29not only were they tortured,
22:30but some of them
22:31went through trials
22:32because of their faith.
22:33Still others had the trial
22:35of mockings and scourging
22:36and chains and imprisonment.
22:39They weren't champions of faith
22:40because of what they did.
22:41They were champions
22:42because of what happened to them
22:44and how they honored God
22:46in the midst of their testing.
22:47The Bible says
22:48some of them were tortured,
22:50some had trials,
22:51and some were tormented.
22:54It says in Hebrews 11, 37,
22:57they wandered about
22:58in sheepskins and goatskins,
23:00being destitute
23:01and afflicted and tormented,
23:03of whom the world
23:04was not worthy.
23:05They wandered in deserts
23:07and mountains,
23:08in dens and caves
23:09of the earth.
23:11God said they were the champions,
23:14not just the people
23:15who accomplished great things.
23:17Don't let anybody tell you
23:19that the Bible says
23:20that this is a walk in the park
23:22from the moment you get saved
23:24all the way
23:25to when you get to heaven.
23:27It ain't a walk in the park.
23:30Life is filled with difficulties
23:32and challenges,
23:33but here's what you need to know.
23:35You are not out of the will of God
23:37when you're going
23:37through difficult things.
23:39You may be in the most important time
23:41in your life
23:41to show the strength of God
23:43in your life.
23:44The world looks around
23:45and they see prosperity
23:46and they say,
23:47well, yeah,
23:47if I had all that stuff,
23:48I'd believe in God too.
23:51But when they see God's people
23:52walking through the difficult times
23:55as described here,
23:56and many of you know
23:56what these words are about,
23:58and you still are honoring
24:00the Lord God with your life,
24:02the Bible says
24:02you can hold your hands up high too
24:04because you're a champion.
24:05You're one of God's champions.
24:08What can we learn
24:09from this passage
24:10with all these names?
24:12Three things
24:12I want you to remember.
24:14First of all,
24:16faith enlists
24:17all kinds of servants.
24:20Did you know that?
24:21When I read this chapter
24:22and I went back over it,
24:23I was just amazed.
24:25God doesn't have any stereotype.
24:27What kind of people
24:28does God use?
24:29Well, what kind of person are you?
24:31God uses you.
24:33So the first thing
24:34you need to know
24:34is that faith enlists
24:36all kinds of servants.
24:37And the second thing
24:38is that faith employs
24:40all kinds of strategies.
24:42Isn't it interesting
24:43that God did his work
24:44and we've seen it
24:45in the 11th chapter.
24:46He did it
24:47in some of the strangest ways
24:48you've ever seen
24:49any work be done.
24:50I mean,
24:50how do you take out a city
24:52by marching around it 13 times?
24:54How do you take out a giant
24:56with a slingshot?
24:58How do you take down
25:00two armies
25:01in a coalition
25:02with 300 men?
25:04Everything God does,
25:06he does uniquely.
25:08You know,
25:08people say,
25:09God is boring.
25:10Are you kidding me?
25:11God is not boring.
25:13God has something different
25:14for everybody to do
25:15if you just let him do it.
25:17So God uses
25:18all kinds of servants.
25:19He uses
25:20all kinds of strategy
25:22so that faith enjoys
25:24all kinds of success.
25:26Faith can do
25:27what nothing else can do.
25:29God has a place
25:30for all of us
25:31to serve him.
25:32Wherever you happen to be
25:33in your life
25:34at this present time,
25:35I want to ask you
25:36to stop for a moment
25:37and think about this.
25:39What is it
25:39that God has given me to do
25:41and am I doing it?

27:01that it is far more
27:03important to have
27:03just a little faith

27:07of faith
27:08in the wrong object.
27:09And my prayer is
27:11that you will be
27:12a person of great faith
27:13and that your faith
27:14is placed squarely
27:15in the person
27:16of Jesus Christ,
27:17for He alone
27:19is worthy of our faith
27:20and trust.
