NFL Insider Mike Florio takes us through the strange questions surrounding Ravens QB Lamar Jackson's health status as the Ravens prepare to face the Bills on Sunday afternoon.
Transcript
00:00I wonder, Mike, what the Ravens think of all of that
00:02and whether they even feel like they know, they're talking like they know,
00:05that he'll play on Sunday.
00:07But yesterday, very interesting about, you know,
00:11Jesse Minter is asked about the report on whether it came as a shock
00:15that Jackson didn't play, and he said a little bit,
00:18which in coach speak I feel like is a pretty strong response.
00:21I saw some old quotes from Harbaugh when he was there about, you know,
00:25thinking Lamar was going to play and then he didn't end up playing.
00:29It's becoming a bit of a story about Jackson and, like,
00:34is he just not willing to play through injury?
00:36Because that is different than a lot of quarterbacks.
00:40Like, it's so easy to compare our guy here, Allen, to that.
00:43Allen plays through everything and doesn't want you to hear about him.
00:46Mahomes plays through how many ankle injuries in his career.
00:50Jackson is not really doing that, it sounds like.
00:54Well, and Jackson met with the media on Friday,
00:57and he said, as of Friday, right now I'm heading in the right direction.
01:00I've got two days of a grace period before we know.
01:04And then come Saturday, they downgraded him from questionable to out.
01:08Rarely do you see a guy who's questionable for the home team
01:12get downgraded on Saturday.
01:14That usually happens for the road team
01:16when the guy who's already listed as questionable
01:19doesn't travel with the team.
01:21Obviously, he's not going to play.
01:23So it was a surprise they downgraded him on Saturday,
01:26gave the Bengals a full 24 hours of knowing
01:28it's definitely going to be Tyler Huntley for final preparations.
01:31That's important.
01:33And there was a lot of conversation about pain tolerance
01:37and what it does to his mobility.
01:40Well, at a certain point,
01:41I still would rather have one-dimensional Lamar Jackson
01:44than two-dimensional Tyler Huntley.
01:47So it does contribute to this vibe that's been there for several years.
01:52And I think in past years, when it happens late in the season
01:54and he doesn't have security on his contract
01:58or any contract at all beyond the current season,
02:02there's a business reason to say,
02:03I'm not putting myself at risk unless I'm 100%
02:06because I don't have my security.
02:08That's not an uncommon thought
02:10from players who don't have contracts that they believe they've earned.
02:14I don't think that's the issue here.
02:16And I think what's been lost in all this,
02:17teams like to be so secretive about injuries.
02:20Ankle sprains come in different shapes and sizes.
02:23A high ankle sprain is the one that takes the longest time to heal.
02:26And Lamar said, I've got a high ankle sprain.
02:28So three weeks is not unreasonable for him to be out.
02:33We're getting closer to when he could be able to come back.
02:35And he said himself he was moving in the right direction,
02:38but something happened between Friday and Saturday.
02:40And now, you know, the way I put it on Football Night in America,
02:43within the building, there's no real idea as to when he'll be back.
02:48And the thinking is that anyone who would say they know is simply guessing.
02:51And that's what I'm saying.
02:51And that's what I'm saying.
