00:02Salomayor Pockrell was riding on a shopping trolley pushed by his parents at the Southlands
00:07shopping centre in Mawson when he was hit by a car in January this year. Bystanders and
00:12his parents rushed to free him before emergency services arrived. He was taken to hospital
00:17where he died.
00:19Maureen Brew had pulled into an empty car park before the crash but hadn't put on the
00:23parking brake. The car rolled forward and she stopped it before rummaging in the glove
00:27box looking for the car's user manual to identify a fault light which had gone off
00:32on the dashboard and tried to turn the car on which was already running. The car mounted
00:36the kerb and Brew panicked pressing the accelerator rather than the brake as the car surged forward
00:42and hit the trolley slamming into a shop front. She pleaded guilty to culpable driving occasioning
00:47death in June. In a victim impact statement read to the court today the boy's parents
00:52described the anguish of losing their child as being beyond someone's imagination but
00:57asked that the judge impose the lightest possible sentence so that Brew could spend her remaining
01:02years surrounded by her children. The court has reserved its decision on a sentence for a later date.
