00:00We've got Kevin Byard.
00:01Maybe he's a lamb chop guy.
00:02You think Kevin looks to him?
00:04Maybe so.
00:06All right, all right, all right.
00:08Ladies and gentlemen, it is a Patriots Monday.
00:10Not lamb chops and gravy.
00:11It's a Patriots Monday.
00:12And Kevin Byard III, we love having him on.
00:14He's brought to you by FindMassMoney.gov.

00:28Kevin Byard, what's up, buddy?
00:30How you doing?
00:31I'm doing great.
00:32How about you guys?
00:33Hey, we're doing great.
00:34We're doing very, very good.
00:36Hey, by the way, you know, I don't know how much football you watch on a Sunday
00:40where you're not playing.
00:42But when you look around the AFC right now, do you see a conference right now
00:47where anyone can beat anyone?
00:49Like, is there a team right now that it seems wide open, doesn't it, Kevin?
00:54I mean, honestly, I see the whole NFL like that.
00:56I know we kind of get into, like, different powerhouses or teams that we feel like
01:01can just beat anybody on any given Sunday.
01:02But that's really what it is.
01:04Like, in the AFC versus the NFC, it doesn't really matter what records are.
01:08Anything could be beat if they don't bring their best on that, you know,
01:10on that Sunday.
01:12But like I said, but in the AFC, you know, obviously there's going to be
01:15really good teams.
01:16Obviously, the Chiefs are still really good, even though they took a loss yesterday.
01:20Obviously, you got the Bills and you got us.
01:22You got a couple other teams.
01:23But, no, I mean, at the end of the day, man, we can only be focused on ourselves
01:26and just trying to keep improving.
01:27But to answer your first question, or I know it wasn't a question,
01:31but I do watch football on Sunday.
01:33As much as I can, I got YouTube TV.
01:34I've got, like, four different games on.
01:36At one point on Sunday, the TV was watching me because I was taking a little
01:39nap with my son.
01:41But, no, honestly, I'm a fan, too.
01:43So I love to watch the games.
01:44I got friends on other teams.
01:46So I'm always kind of watching football if it's on.
01:49I know, like Kevin, Mike Brable said this morning this was kind of a self-scout day
01:52to see where you guys are at after seven games.
01:54Where do you guys think you're at?
01:56Where do you think you're at?
01:57Yeah, man, I think we've been playing, you know, fairly good, obviously.
02:00But, you know, when you talk about being four and three,
02:02there's obviously some inconsistencies there, especially for us.
02:06You know, you think about most of our losses have come on the road.
02:09So, obviously, we're not being road warriors right now.
02:12But, at least, you know, on the defensive side of the ball these past couple games,
02:16you know, I think the tackling hasn't really been up to our standard,
02:18you know, especially on the back end.
02:19It's something I think we pride ourselves being a good tackling secondary.
02:22We haven't been good at that these past few games.
02:25And, you know, we want to be able to get the uptick on turnovers.
02:27I know it's kind of like a broken record.
02:29We keep talking about it.
02:30But we have to try to find ways to get the ball,
02:33whether it's, you know, punching the ball out on a ball carrier
02:37or catching interceptions.
02:38And, you know, we're not at a point in the year where we need to start pressing
02:41and try to, you know, going outside and framing the defense to do that.
02:44You know, I think as players, when we get our opportunities,
02:47we've got to take advantage of them.
02:48Can I ask you about the tackling?
02:50Because, you know, you brought that up.
02:52And there's something that people who don't play the game might not understand
02:56that maybe you can kind of give us a little bit of insight into.
02:59Thursday nights are obviously notoriously sloppy
03:02because there's less time to prepare.
03:04There's less time to heal.
03:05And I'm sure the amount of energy to tackle a large human being
03:09the way that you guys do going at full speed
03:11is extremely exhausting at heart.
03:14Is there something about Thursday nights that makes the tackling sloppier
03:17because you guys just aren't in your normal, like, peak time to recover?
03:23Or is that just something that you look at and you go,
03:26that's just a problem and I don't want to use Thursday as an excuse?
03:29Yeah, I mean, I don't want to use it as an excuse.
03:31You know, I think there is possibly some of, you know,
03:35obviously not having, you know, a full week of rest.
03:38Maybe, you know, layers could be tired or whatever it may be,
03:41but that's definitely no excuse to, like, missing tackles.
03:43I think, especially for us on our end, you know,
03:46a lot of times when we miss these tackles in the open field
03:49is because more often than not it's just too much space.
03:52You know, I mean, we're a heavy man team.
03:53I mean, I think everybody in the league knows that.
03:56So if you miss a tackle, you know what I mean, and man to man,
03:59the more than likely it's probably going to be what we call an X play,
04:01a big game, especially in the pass game.
04:03But, you know, right if it's the run game, whatever it may be,
04:05just making sure that we're eliminating that space,
04:08but at the same time, coming to balance with some of these tackles.
04:11You know, we talked about in our building, you know,
04:12not crossing over as far as getting your feet crossed up.
04:15That's going to usually lead to a missed tackle.
04:17And also hopping when you get in position.
04:19You hear it from park ball days of, like, coming to balance.
04:23Make sure you're getting your feet, you know, chopping your feet
04:24and keeping your feet moving on contact.
04:26I think that's some of the little small fundamental things
04:28that haven't been strong.
04:29And I think over the past couple weeks, just watching the film,
04:32that's something that is going to be a huge emphasis for us,
04:35especially knowing that we have a full week that we got to be better at.
04:37So, I'm sure, Kevin, you're probably tired of rehashing that Thursday game.
04:40But how close were you to getting a finger on that ball in that third and nine?
04:43It just seems so tight.
04:44And on a play like that, do you just kind of credit Caleb Williams?
04:47He made a great throw.
04:49Yeah, I mean, you know, you got to give him credit for sure.
04:51He made a, you know, phenomenal throw.
04:54You know, I was highly upset with myself at the end of the game
04:56because obviously when you're in the moment, you know,
04:58that's one of those plays where you think to yourself like, hey, you know,
05:02the story is at the end of the game, it's like, man,
05:04how phenomenal a throw by Caleb, I mean, on the road, back shoulder dig,
05:08which really isn't like a high percentage throw, you know what I mean?
05:11But it was a phenomenal throw and catch.
05:13But for me, it's like, hey, you're able to end the game right there
05:15and give your offense a short field.
05:17We score.
05:18Now we're looking at, again, the stop at the end of the game.
05:20And so that's just one of those games.
05:22You know, we all talk about football is a game of interest.
05:25And I literally felt the ball go right over the top of my fingertips.
05:28And, you know, like I said, it was just a phenomenal throw.
05:31You know, I was basically just there in position.
05:33It's just, you know, the millimeters of the game.
05:36So, yeah, I was upset with myself because I wanted to be able to make that
05:39play for my team.
05:40But, you know, I also give credit to Caleb.
05:42You know, I've seen him make those throws all the time,
05:43and it was a phenomenal throw as well.
05:45All right, we're talking to Kevin Byard III here on a Patriots Monday.
05:48We've talked to you about C.J. Gardner-Johnson before,
05:50but he was just suspended for spitting.
05:54And I wanted to ask you because we've talked to other NFL players
05:57about this before.
05:58On a scale of things that could really piss off an NFL player,
06:02where does being spit on by an opponent, where does that rank?
06:09I mean, I wouldn't say probably, but I would definitely rank that at the top.
06:13I mean, I think, you know, take football out of it, right?
06:16Like, you know, being spit on is probably one of the most,
06:20just in my opinion, some of the most disrespectful things you can do
06:23to a man outside of, you know, urinating.
06:26You know what I mean?
06:27Like, I just think that it's, you know, if you look at a person
06:30and you just decide to spit on them, you basically just say,
06:32and I think so less of you, I'm just going to throw my saliva at you.
06:35I know it's pretty disrespectful, but you see it happen all the time,
06:39you know what I mean, in the game.
06:40I just think it's something that, you know, should be absolutely never done.
06:43And I think if you do decide to do something like that to a player,
06:48even if it was on my team, anything that happens after that
06:51is, like, completely, you know, fair in my opinion.
06:54Like, if anybody like Gonzo or somebody say, hey, you know,
06:58he gets a person to foul, a big fight erupts, and he said, man,
07:01this guy spit on me, then I'd really be like, hey,
07:03and I can't even really be mad at you.
07:05You know, words and stuff like that is, hey, we got to control our emotions,
07:08but I can understand if you get spat on, you know,
07:11how it can lead to, you know, something extracurricular happening to a player.
07:15I have heard, because I have had players come on before and say,
07:18I would rather have an opponent purposely step on my hand
07:23and break some of the bones of my hand than be spit on.
07:26Do you kind of subscribe to that?
07:28Yeah, I mean, because like I said, I think, you know,
07:30all that stuff is within the game, you know what I mean?
07:32Like, if you're sitting there talking trash about a player, like, you know,
07:34you hear stories about, you know, players or former players,
07:37hey, I was doing research on this guy's family or whatever, like,
07:41you know, playing those mind games, like, you can look at it as like, okay,
07:43like, that's uncalled for, but at the same time,
07:45those are mind tricks, it's all within the game.
07:47But the moment you decide to spit on somebody,
07:50then we're completely out of the realm of, you know, this is not football.
07:54You know what I mean?
07:55Guys can, like I said, I personally believe can react however they want to react
07:58if you get spat on, because that's more about how you feel about a player
08:03as a person versus then as a player.
08:05You know what I mean?
08:06Like, there's certain stuff that goes on within the game, mind games and stuff,
08:09but, you know, spitting is, that's completely uncalled for.
08:12Yeah, that is fascinating.
08:13By the way, Kevin, we have a final question.
08:16You know, we've talked to you before about the trash talk that goes out in the field.
08:19I just want to ask you if you've ever heard this term before.
08:22Jalen Brown was talking about his beef with Jason Tatum,
08:25and he says it's no beef, it's lamb chops and gravy.
08:29Have you ever heard that phrase before?
08:31Do you know what that means?
08:34No, I mean, I don't, I've never heard that term before, for sure.
08:38But, I mean, I would think that he was kind of saying it's not beef,
08:42but there's something there.
08:44You know what I mean?
08:45So it's like it's obviously not beef, but it's something close to it.
08:48And then if you look at lamb chops, I mean, if you go to a restaurant,
08:51you're like, hey, I don't want to order steak tonight,
08:52but I do want something, some red meat.
08:54I'm going to order some lamb chops.
08:55So I think that's basically what he was trying to say.
08:58If somebody said that to you, would you be like, dude, that's just corny?
09:02I mean, I would probably say it's somewhere in between corny and just like,
09:06you could have just said what you really wanted to say.
09:09Exactly.
09:10All right, well, Kevin Byer III, always great having you on, man.
09:12And good luck against Miami this week.
09:14Hopefully you bring home a W, my man.
09:16Thanks, Kevin.
09:16I appreciate you, man.
09:17I hope you guys have a good one.
09:18All right, thanks.

09:32We still have Drake May coming on.
09:34If you want to leave him at Ask May Anything, go to the Odyssey app,
09:36press the microphone button, leave your name, where you're from,
09:39and your non-NFL questions.
09:41See, even Kevin Byer thinks that that's super cool.
09:43He's so good to be able to roll with that.
09:44That's a great answer about lamb chops, and there's something there,
09:47and he should just say what he means.
09:48I mean, he said it all.
09:50Byer's the best interview on the station.
09:51He's great.
09:51He's great.
09:52And, matter of fact, he's somebody that I would absolutely like to talk to more
09:55on the show.
09:56That's why, listen, that's why we got him on, because he's so good.
