Who really controls public decisions?
In 1929, the American tobacco industry had a major issue: half the population—women—did not smoke, which meant half the potential profits were lost. To change this, they hired Edward Bernays, known as the father of modern propaganda.
Bernays understood that you cannot force people into buying a product; you must sell them an emotion. Instead of selling cigarettes, he sold "freedom." During the 1929 Easter Parade, high-society women were staged to light cigarettes, labeling them "Torches of Freedom." The media was alerted in advance, photos went viral, and sales skyrocketed. People believed it was their own independent choice, yet it was an orchestrated marketing campaign.
