An icy dawn at a lakeside hide promised a perfect flamingo shoot, with a crescent moon, a clear horizon and a sunrise building over the water. But as the photographer waited in the freezing -7C cold with coffee in hand, a group of farm dogs arrived and scattered the ducks and flamingos before the light could be used properly.

What follows is a patient wildlife photography session where the hope of capturing “Flamingos at Dawn” slowly gives way to reality: birds staying distant, no usable betting frame, and a last attempt at environmental shots as the sun climbs too high. It’s a calm, honest behind-the-scenes look at wildlife hide photography, where weather, timing and animal behaviour decide the outcome.

For anyone interested in bird photography, flamingo photography, lakeside wildlife hides, sunrise shoots and real-world field conditions, this is a grounded example of how often nature has other plans. It also suits viewers who enjoy outdoor photography, nature videography and behind-the-scenes wildlife filming.

00:18Thank you so much for joining us.
00:51Hello again, good morning, I'm back in my hide on the lakeside, it's probably just
00:59gone after 6.15am and it's minus seven so it's pretty cold and I'm hoping to get a fantastic
01:09sunrise this morning with which to photograph that flamingos and wildfowl that should happen
01:17along the shoreline here. Fingers crossed I didn't make too much noise coming down so
01:24they'll still be some birds for me to photograph. I'm also amazingly lucky that there's a superb
01:34moon set and it's looking absolutely stunning and the horizon looks pretty clear as well so that's
01:44a promising sign for the sunrise. All I have to do now is wait just over an hour until the
01:51sun rises
01:52and hopefully get some lovely images and in the meantime I've got my coffee so I'm not too cold
02:01and yeah I shall see you in a little while hopefully with the sun rising.
02:08The rising has just started glowing incredibly and then let me just try and show you how to
02:15and then go for my coffee. So the view in front of me is just absolutely stunning
02:24and the light is just absolutely phenomenal.
02:37It's brighter and brighter now. Unfortunately there's no flamingo in front of me at all. There's
02:43plenty of ducks and a few other sets um but no flamingo. I think that's way over onto the other
02:51side
02:53of the lake there. It's still about half an hour to go till sunrise so we might get one or
03:04two fly in
03:05with any luck. If they see the ducks are feeding confidently here then hopefully that should give
03:12them the confidence as well to come down. But as always with wildlife there's no guarantee of anything.
03:19So just wait it out and see.
03:44So
03:52we pass away
03:54we have a little bit of a blind hair soon.
03:56So
04:00we're going to see

04:06as we're going to see
04:07where we got
04:07and we're going to see
04:11in next
04:11here
05:02Disaster.
05:04I've been joined by some friends down here that have scared everything off.
05:24They're the farm dogs from the buffalo farm just behind the embankment here where I've
05:32set up and unfortunately, as soon as they came down, every duck that was in front of me scarpered.
05:40These things happen, I guess.
05:43All I can do is hope that they disappear before the sun comes up and I still have a chance
05:52of getting something.
08:39Someone's just started rising and it looks amazing.
08:44Unfortunately, because of the dogs, there's not a single bird in frame.
08:48It's a shame because it looks absolutely incredible.
11:53Bye for now.
