A teenage boy has been jailed until at least May 2028 for sexual assaults on a jogger in Canberra’s north and also on a teenage girl. The then-15-year-old was on bail accused of assaulting the girl in a park when he attacked the older victim in an incident that raised community fears about women walking or running alone.

00:02A terrifying attack which prompted warnings for runners to stay alert.
00:07Keep your phone with you if you can, if there's any other device, communication devices,
00:11those sorts of things, tell people where you are and where you're going to be.
00:15The then 15-year-old boy grabbed the 60-year-old woman from behind while she was running on
00:19the Centenary Trail in Bonner in May last year, strangling her until she lost consciousness.
00:24When she came to, she attempted to get away but he pulled her back and indecently assaulted her.
00:30He then took her phone and fled.
00:32His victim ran too until she found another woman who called triple zero.
00:37Police found the boy a short time later and he was arrested.
00:40He later pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault in the third degree, committing an act of indecency
00:46and choking, strangling or suffocating another person.
00:48In sentencing today, Justice Louise Taylor noted the now 17-year-old has a severe neurodevelopmental
00:55disorder and had a difficult childhood but said ultimately he knew what he was doing was wrong.
01:00The offending was brazen, she said.
01:02He could only have known that in each case the victim was not consenting.
01:06With the boy to inevitably return to the community, Justice Taylor said she had to balance the need
01:11for rehabilitation with the severity of his crimes and the impact not just on the victims but on the community.
01:17The hope that both victims had for their perhaps quite different futures has been shattered, she said.
01:22I commend their courage and hope for their healing.
01:25The boy was sentenced to serve six years and six months imprisonment
01:29including time already served at Bimbury Youth Justice Centre
01:32to be suspended from May 2028 on entering into a good behaviour order.
