00:13Good afternoon everyone, welcome to our pre-match press conference to preview our game against Arsenal.
00:18We'll start off with Alan from Sky.
00:19David, we say most weeks here that there's no easy games in the Prem, but that's what certainly isn't it.
00:24No, it's not, and it never has been over many years, but we'll look forward to it.
00:30David, a game in midweek, we have to try and capitalise maybe on their extra game in midweek.
00:35I was going to say, how do you go about, when you look at these teams at the top, the
00:39champions, go about taking them on?
00:44I thought we'd done really well last year against them. We played really well down at Arsenal.
00:49I hope we can do the same, and if I look back at the team we had out,
00:53we were pretty threadbare at that time, so we've done a good job.
00:58I hope we can do it again, but obviously Arsenal have got so many different tools in their bag
01:04and people who they can use in different positions, so we're fully aware of the team we're up against and
01:09the level.
01:10Does knowing Mikel help you in any way?
01:13Not in the past, it hasn't, that's for sure.
01:17Obviously, I've known Mikel a long time, and it was wonderful for him to win the league with Arsenal with
01:24a few conversations.
01:27But no, I don't think it's the case, I think he's got a really strong squad of players and they've
01:34started the season in that fashion again.
01:37You've got a number of players on the fringe of a starting place, the likes of Hackey, Dippen, George, Alcaraz,
01:45Norgard now, he's coming back.
01:48How difficult is that to manage at the moment?
01:51Well, I don't think it'll be as difficult as what, say, Mikel's got with the players he would have to
01:55manage,
01:55because he's got a lot of players who obviously need to play in the team.
01:59But it's a thing that all football managers have to deal with.
02:02We've actually all got, most of us, maybe not us, have all got bigger squads now,
02:07and it's a bit harder because you really generally want to play all the players,
02:12but you have to separate yourself from being the manager to being the guy who you talk to every day
02:18in the training ground,
02:18and we work with it, you know, we have to come in and make a decision.
02:23And it's the same for all the managers, whatever league you're in, whether you're in the second or third division,
02:27there'll be lots of managers in that league as well having to make decisions on who they play and who
02:31they don't play,
02:32and it's never easy.
02:33Because you obviously see things that we don't, fans don't.
02:37Do you base what you see in the training ground every day?
02:42Yeah, it's a huge part of it, you know, obviously how people train.
02:45Obviously results as well, you know, if you're playing well, you know,
02:48there's people could drop off, not train quite as well, but they've played well in the game.
02:53So I think managers have decisions to make, whether it's, you know,
02:56you need to make some changes because of what you've seen in training or what you've seen in the games.
03:01But for most of our games so far this season, we've been pretty settled
03:05because the team have started and done a really good job.
03:08We know you've only got the one-strike ADN, Barry.
03:11Does that make it difficult for you to rest him if you wanted to and to change it around a
03:16little bit?
03:16Yeah, it does because he gives us, whatever he does, he gives us a focal point and he's a centre
03:21-forward.
03:21And, you know, I'm guessing if we didn't play him, we'd probably be able to say,
03:25why not play him?
03:26But you're asking me a question about should we give him or get him,
03:29find a way of maybe getting him some rest at times?
03:31Well, we will if we think there's opportunities to.
03:34And, you know, us finding somebody at the moment we know might not be that easy.
03:39We're looking within the squad and what we can do.
03:43But Thierno's actually quite a good lad.
03:46He's got a big appetite, you know, doesn't complain, he's not said anything.
03:50There's been some games where he's looked as if he's fatigued or maybe he could have even changed.
03:54But sometimes maybe if you're a centre-forward, you want to stay on for the full game
03:58because you've got a better chance of getting a goal.
04:00And I think he's of that mind at the moment as well.
04:04And, of course, Chelsea game, one of the things I think disappointed you
04:08was there's not as many chances created as...
04:10No.
04:10How do you change that?
04:12Well, I think up until that game we were one of the high ones on were XGs and what we'd
04:16done.
04:18So sometimes you have to look at the opposition, maybe say, how are they better?
04:21I know Chelsea had, you know, maybe in the past had been a little bit unreliable in their defending
04:27and then maybe at times, you know, had conceded goals.
04:29But we didn't get many opportunities.
04:31We got a great chance.
04:32Jack Grealish puts a great ball in for Tierno to score in the first half.
04:38And, look, quite often in the Premier League to get that first goal is really important
04:41and we didn't get it.
04:44And it would have been a great assist for Jack and it would have also been another goal for Tierno.
04:50Christian Norgard, he came on.
04:51It looked like he struggled a little bit.
04:53But as you suggested in the press conference before the game,
04:56you know, he was a way away.
04:58Was that difficult for you to make that decision?
05:00Yeah, it was actually, no, it wasn't a difficult decision to bring him on
05:03because he's trained and he's had probably three weeks and we're thinking,
05:06can we, I was trying to see if I could get him the final.
05:09I think it was about 15, 20 minutes in the game
05:11because it would have been another little bit of game time for him.
05:14But I think when we brought him on,
05:16we realised he's a little bit further away than we all had hoped.
05:19But we expected that.
05:21We didn't think that he was going to be back probably,
05:23probably fully fired and probably till after the next international break,
05:27if we're being honest, because he's had no real pre-season with us.
05:31He's probably had about seven days, 10 days training,
05:35half a game.
05:37But we'd seen enough to suggest and I wanted to see if 20 minutes,
05:41how did I get him the minutes, how did I get him the game time?
05:43So we tried it and obviously it showed everybody saw that he's probably got a little bit to go.
05:48But Christian was the first one to come to me and say that, you know,
05:51he was, he was sorry about it.
05:53And he's realised that he's a bit further away than we probably all thought.
05:56So you've got, after this game, seven, sorry, three games within seven days.
06:02Does that change your thought about selection?
06:06Change the, yeah, I'll have to.
06:09I'll need to try and use the players the best I can,
06:11because obviously it could be a push for us with the size of squad we've got.
06:16But we'll try to alter a wee bit, giving them a little bit more time off
06:20and try to give them a bit more downtime, maybe some of the training sessions,
06:23so that we're not getting as many injuries or, you know,
06:27we're just sort of preparing the players.
06:29We've got a smaller group and we have to do it.
06:30So I'm looking to do the best I can and try and pick the right players,
06:35because I want to win all the games.
06:37And it's not as if the games you're talking about is easy.
06:40You could say, hey, you could leave three or four out in this game.
06:41None of them are those type of games.
06:44You're probably having to pick your best team.
06:47Just listening to Christian Perslow this week, you know,
06:49the former Premier League CEO,
06:50and saying that the owners here should sort your contract situation out
06:56and to get stability to it.
06:59Is there any development in that area at the moment?
07:02Well, what I would say, I think I would agree with Christian Perslow about stability.
07:07I think stability at any football club is really important.
07:10And it's probably the thing that this club over recent years has not been in place.
07:16I've actually felt that over the last year and a half or so,
07:19under the Free Coons, there has been a real sense of stability.
07:24A better feeling.
07:26I think there's been better media coverage of Everton
07:28than there's ever been in the last year and a bit.
07:30I think there's a lot of good things.
07:31Obviously, the stadium has been talked about loads and loads.
07:35Being a manager and being around a long time,
07:37I do think the managers are a big part of stability.
07:40But we're also in a world where managers change very quickly as well.
07:44So that's another side tip.
07:45So no developments in that?
07:47Well, there's always been developments.
07:49There's been talks that have taken place.
07:52Things are a bit quiet at the moment,
07:53and I'm guessing it's more to do with, obviously,
07:55just the situation we're in just now.
07:57And just finally from me, any injuries going into tomorrow?
07:59We've got our share of bits and pieces,
08:02and, you know, we'll keep them quiet.
08:08So no point in me asking if Jarrod Bram waits about?
08:12I wouldn't be answering any questions at the moment, that's for sure.
08:16The whole game and the Chelsea game,
08:18you conceded quickly after the break.
08:21Is there anything you can do as a manager?
08:24What do you put that down to?
08:25Yeah, I get asked that question.
08:27I think you asked me that question after the game.
08:29We conceded goals.
08:33Yeah, we need to try and look to see why that's conceding.
08:36But, you know, we played Chelsea last week,
08:39who I think have scored goals in the opening first five or six minutes.
08:44So we didn't concede there because we made them fully aware
08:46of how good Chelsea were at the start of the game
08:48and what they've done and the goals they've scored.
08:53But maybe we should have kept them aware
08:55of maybe how good they might have been at the start of the second half.
08:57But we gave away a poor goal, didn't we,
08:59which really changed the game, as we did against Hull.
09:02So it's left us chasing things a little bit
09:04when we shouldn't have been.
09:05So, yeah, it'll be in my mind now during halftime
09:09that maybe I have to get the players out a little bit earlier.
09:12Maybe I need to, you know, stop talking as much,
09:15give them more time.
09:16All the things which come into it at halftime,
09:18which are part of the way you address the players.
09:20Maybe the players need to get themselves focused and ready
09:23more than they have been as well.
09:24So all those things we'll try and look to see
09:27if there's something we can do better.
09:30You're always asked about Tyler Dibling, Hayden Hackney, Tyreek George.
09:34How do you balance game time for them then?
09:37If they aren't often coming off the bench or starting,
09:41how do you keep them happy and how do you balance their development?
09:45Well, we think a lot about them.
09:47We watch them training every day, we mentioned.
09:49We see them.
09:50We judge on how the team's done on a Saturday as well.
09:53Do we think that somebody's due to come into the team?
09:55Do we think there's a change?
09:59But my history would suggest Leighton Baines,
10:04Phil Jagielka, Joanne Lescott, Tim Cale,
10:07all those ones who've come in might have had to wait
10:08a little bit of time before they became first-team regulars.
10:11I'm not saying these boys have to do that,
10:13but hopefully they develop as well as those boys did
10:17because at that time that was the way it was.
10:20And, yeah, they might need to sit on the bench a little while and look in,
10:23but hopefully when they come on then they'll show what they're capable of.
10:27How does the likes of Hayden Hackney deal with that himself
10:30because he's come from the Championship
10:32where he's probably one of the first names on the team sheet?
10:36How does he deal with that inside here?
10:38Well, I think if you're a player and you step up,
10:40you're going to have to realise that I don't think if you go to a big club
10:42you're ever going to find that there's a jersey waiting on you
10:45and you play all the games.
10:47There's competition at every club.
10:48The squads are getting bigger at every club as well.
10:51So wherever you go, I don't think there'll be any.
10:54There'll be very, very few players who could guarantee
10:56they're getting that jersey.
10:58I spoke to Harrison Armstrong this week.
11:01The way he talks, he talks as though he's got years of experience with him.
11:04He spoke about how he's worked alongside you so far
11:09and you supported him in the summer
11:10and he's gone on to start seven Premier League games,
11:13which he said to him that was his aim.
11:15How much more is there from Harrison Armstrong
11:18and what do you feel working with him as a young talent?
11:22Well, where you started there,
11:24I'd say he's a really intelligent boy for his age
11:27and he's got a lot of football intelligence, more importantly,
11:29which I like.
11:30It means that he's so adaptable for us.
11:33We can ask him to play a bit higher, a bit lower.
11:35We can ask him to go a bit wider
11:37and he's quite easy, able to take in the information
11:41and the understanding of it.
11:42So we really like him for that.
11:45He's absolutely stepped ahead of where we thought he would be.
11:48Here's him saying that.
11:50He has with us as well.
11:52You mentioned Hayden Hackney.
11:53Hayden Hackney's partly because of Harrison Armstrong's form
11:56has been so good.
11:57He's found it difficult to get in the side.
12:00Harrison's given his legs and energy.
12:04He's still got a lot to do as far as we would want him
12:07with what he can offer us.
12:09So technically, I'm on it.
12:11I'm about trying to get my goals and assists,
12:13playing forward more often.
12:16But he's been a big part of what I said there.
12:20Up until Chelsea, we hadn't lost a game.
12:22So people talk about other players.
12:24There wasn't much wrong with the players who were playing.
12:27But Harrison's been one of the players who've started
12:29and I think he's done really well and he's maturing.
12:32But there will be times where at that age,
12:34there'll be times where he needs to step away.
12:36We need to give him a bit of a breather.
12:37And there'll be times when he keeps playing the way he's doing.
12:40He's doing fine.
12:41We've got no real reason to look too much deeper at it.
12:44I asked you last week about if there was a world
12:47where Tyreek George and Jack Grealish will start a game together
12:50and play together.
12:51Is there also a situation where Jack could move from the left?
12:56Have you ever considered putting him in the middle?
12:58I think we've got a big consideration about moving Jack
13:00more to a role, maybe more inside.
13:03Not more so than the right.
13:05But yeah, Jack Grealish could play anywhere.
13:07He's that good a footballer.
13:08He's such a good footballer.
13:10It wouldn't matter wherever he played.
13:12But no, we've looked at it.
13:13We've actually had a little bit.
13:15We played Blackburn.
13:16We gave him a little bit of a role inside the pitch a bit further.
13:19So we're watching.
13:21It's not as if we're not doing it.
13:22And it's not as if we're not thinking about it.
13:24And the people out there think we're not doing it.
13:27We are.
13:27We're certainly considering it.
13:30But yeah, but Tyreek's a big thing
13:32because Tyreek had a really pretty good start to the season.
13:37And just got a little bit blunted because of Jack's arrival.
13:41So we're hoping that Tyreek, when he gets his opportunities,
13:43is ready to flourish.
13:45Just finally from me on Christian Norgard.
13:47Excuse me.
13:48On Christian Norgard.
13:49Has the plan for him changed a little bit now
13:52with what you'll need to do with him?
13:56Yeah, probably.
13:57Because there was actually part of me last week
14:00was half considering starting him.
14:01And I'm glad I didn't
14:02because I thought I'd seen bits in training
14:04which would make me think he was getting ready.
14:06But maybe just things went wrong.
14:08You know, things, you know,
14:09he got a couple of loose passes
14:11which he had to deal with
14:12and tried to tidy up and it wasn't.
14:13So I think he's not played often enough,
14:17regular enough.
14:18He's training great.
14:19He's a brilliant character behind the scenes
14:21for the players.
14:24So we're just hoping to try
14:25and get him back in condition.
14:26We hoped it wouldn't have taken as long as this.
14:28That's the truth.
14:29But if that is the fact,
14:31then we have to wait
14:32and just, you know,
14:34make sure we get him as right as we possibly can.
14:37Good luck.
14:37Thanks, Junior.
14:38Any further questions in the open section
14:40before we move on?
14:42No?
14:42OK.
14:44Good luck.
14:44Good luck.
