00:00If you ask a question, you'll just...
00:03Yeah, no idea.
00:04Yeah, plenty of that.
00:06Again.
00:09Whiskey in this, you didn't know that.
00:10That was a thing.
00:12Good afternoon, everyone.
00:13Welcome to our pre-match press conference
00:15to preview our game against Burnley.
00:17We'll start off with Vinny from Spive.
00:19David, I just wanted to revisit Jordan Pickford's save
00:21from the weekend because he described it as possibly
00:23his best ever.
00:25Would you rank it in the moments that he's had for you?
00:27I'm sure Jordan would.
00:28I'm going to do it with that.
00:30Yeah, and quite rightly so.
00:33It was a fabulous save.
00:36Well, we couldn't really give it much more praise
00:37than we did do.
00:38Actually, I made a point to see how good the ball he was
00:42from Tonali and for him to get his hand to it
00:45and get it onto the bar and the save.
00:46Brilliant, brilliant save.
00:47So, well done.
00:49Is it the reaction time or lack of reaction time
00:51that makes it?
00:53Yeah, well, I'm not an expert in it,
00:54but I think we all know football
00:56and we've all picked out great saves
00:58over many, many years from Gordon Banks to...
01:02Scottish goalkeepers were very good as well.
01:04We had some good Scottish goalkeepers.
01:06So, I have to say,
01:08it was a great save by Jordan
01:10and, you know,
01:12one he should enjoy because it was very good.
01:14Just at the other end of the pitch,
01:15the last 10 Premier League games,
01:17Barry and Beto have scored eight goals
01:18between them in the Premier League.
01:22Is that an indication of an improvement
01:24from the pair of them?
01:25What more do you feel needs to come from them as well?
01:27Well, I think we need more.
01:28We need more goals from them.
01:29I don't think the numbers you're talking about
01:31are the numbers I want.
01:34No, I want Centre for us going far more goals
01:37and I want us to be, you know,
01:38so for them to spread that number out
01:40is good in the last games,
01:41but let's be fair,
01:43we've played now 28 games,
01:45so we're needing bigger returns from them.
01:48It's been something we've missed all season
01:50as our goals.
01:52But getting three at the weekend was great for us
01:54because it's not something we've done too often.
01:56What do you think is the key to the pair of them
01:58getting greater consistency?
02:00I think probably from Tierno's point of view,
02:04I think he's, at the start,
02:06people said about getting him more games,
02:08more can you know,
02:08giving him a chance to do it.
02:09Well, we've given him those opportunities
02:11to show what he can do.
02:12We've given him that chance.
02:16Beto's had moments,
02:17but not as good moments
02:17as what he had this time last year.
02:19But he's still in the recent games
02:21just beginning to come up with a couple of goals for us,
02:23so that's his job.
02:25And if he can continue doing that,
02:26then we'll be really pleased.
02:28What satisfaction did you take after Saturday?
02:30From reaching that 40-point mark?
02:33Quite a lot of satisfaction
02:34because it's something which,
02:35it's probably,
02:37we've got the every 10 games to go,
02:38which isn't a bad situation to be in.
02:44But I've always been looking beyond 40 points.
02:46Hopefully it would be beyond that.
02:48But there's always something
02:49in the back of your mind saying,
02:50look,
02:51the recent history here
02:52has never been much better
02:54than trying to reach that points total.
02:57I've tried not to talk about it,
02:58I've tried to talk about it being better
02:59and hopefully us doing more than that
03:02and hopefully we can do.
03:04Can we talk about Europe again?
03:06Because eighth place you're in at the moment,
03:07it looks like it could get
03:08a conference league place this season.
03:10I probably don't want to talk about Europe again
03:13because every time I come in here
03:15when we get in a half-decent position,
03:16it's not going that way.
03:19But what I will say is,
03:21getting back-to-back wins
03:22would be hugely important for us.
03:24We've got Burnley to come up in the game next
03:26and it'll be a tough game,
03:27but we're looking forward to seeing if we can do it.
03:30We're testing ourselves.
03:32The one thing we have got,
03:33we've got players who are full of desire
03:36and commitment
03:37and resilience when they need it as well.
03:41And yeah, sometimes we're like that bit of quality
03:44and maybe can't get over the line on some occasions,
03:46but all the other things you would hope for,
03:48they've got it in abundance.
03:50Does that mean as well,
03:50you're not looking too much at the league table
03:52at the moment?
03:52Because obviously it's very tight in and around you
03:54and then after Burnley,
03:55you've got Arsenal away,
03:56Chelsea at home,
03:57Brentford away before the Merseyside derby.
03:59Yeah, so tough games coming up, aren't they?
04:02But I don't know if at the moment,
04:05I think the teams at the bottom of the league
04:06are coming up with some great performances
04:08and really good results.
04:09We see it from Wolves at the moment
04:10where Burnley have had one or two very good results as well
04:14and looks as if they were unlucky at the weekend as well.
04:18So I'm a bit surprised.
04:20People are surprised by the form of some of the teams
04:23in the Premier League.
04:23I really am
04:24because I think the league this year is really tight.
04:27Again, obviously you face that challenge,
04:29you kind of touched on it there
04:30with Burnley coming to Hill Dickinson
04:32and there's the expectation on you guys
04:34being at home once again
04:35but at the same time
04:36we saw what Burnley can produce.
04:383-0 down, get back to 3-0,
04:39had a couple of goals disallowed.
04:41Yeah, I don't really think
04:42there's a huge expectation on us.
04:44I think we're just going to do what we're doing.
04:46We've not won as many games as we'd like at home
04:48but if you wanted to reverse it
04:49and say that home fixtures
04:52had been as good as away fixtures
04:53we'd be extremely happy with that.
04:56So one way or the other
04:58we've got, as you said at the start of the interview,
04:59is we've got 40 points
05:01whether it's by winning away from home
05:02or whether it be winning from home.
05:05You always want to try
05:06and keep your home fans really happy
05:08but if we have to take all the points away from home
05:11and we don't do so well at home
05:12I think you only need to look through the history books
05:14and look at the teams who've moved to new stadiums.
05:17It's never, ever been that easy
05:19certainly in the first year.
05:20Thanks David.
05:21Cheers.
05:22Thanks for the new will go to Simon
05:23at Premier League Productions.
05:24And you say about expectation
05:26but you know that people will expect you
05:28to win this game.
05:29Absolutely.
05:30Does that add pressure?
05:31What is the pressure that you like
05:32or should it be?
05:33I think that it's the business we're in
05:36and you know the games
05:37that you're probably expected to
05:40and when you're probably expected not to.
05:42I don't think that changes
05:44the media perspective on it
05:45but I've got to think that
05:48you know we go into the game
05:49knowing that if we could get a back-to-back win
05:51it would be really important for us.
05:53It was more from a fans point of view
05:54I think probably you know
05:55when you go expected to win
05:56your arm game sort of thing.
05:58Yeah but I think that
05:59again I think if you're a real football person
06:02at the moment
06:02and you're really studying
06:05and you're considered
06:06in how you're looking at football
06:08you're looking at the Premier League
06:09you're looking at you know
06:11Aston Villa who've been a magnificent
06:13go to Wills
06:13and find it tough at Wills
06:15and you know
06:16Burnley have come up with
06:17some really good results
06:18at different times
06:20you know
06:20so I think that
06:23Chelsea recently
06:24so I don't think there's any
06:26any given in the Premier League
06:27so expectations are there
06:29but sometimes we can't always
06:31quite reach them.
06:33I know Scott Parker
06:34won't want your sympathy
06:35but do you have any for him
06:37given he's had a couple of good
06:38away results recently
06:40and then that home game
06:41on Saturday
06:42where he's scored five goals
06:43but only three of his end
06:44which accounted for them.
06:46I think that
06:46I think that
06:48I don't think Burnley
06:49have been a team
06:50which have been swept this way
06:52and focus
06:52saying that they've been out of it
06:54far from it
06:55I think they've kept fighting
06:56and I think every team
06:57who's had to go to tough moors
06:58found it difficult with the games
07:00if you look through
07:00and yeah
07:01teams have maybe
07:02beat them
07:03like Brentford did at the weekend
07:04but overall
07:06I think they've been
07:06a difficult team
07:08and they've started to get
07:09a couple of pretty
07:10pretty good performances
07:11away from home as well.
07:12He's a good football person.
07:14He's got a partner.
07:14He is.
07:15He's just someone
07:15that you've put in the club.
07:16Yeah actually
07:17I tried to sign him here
07:18a couple of times
07:19for Everton
07:19when I was a manager here
07:20and he was still a player.
07:23That sounds terrible
07:24doesn't it?
07:25He's still quite on.
07:26You know what I mean?
07:27He's still quite on.
07:35He's still quite on.
07:38I think he's doing
07:39a really good job
07:39at Burnley as well.
07:41What was it that stopped him
07:42coming here?
07:42I can't remember
07:43the different reasons
07:45why I get asked.
07:46I was thinking about it.
07:46I mentioned it
07:47in my programme notes
07:48and I just couldn't
07:50quite remember the reasons
07:50why they either fell through.
07:53And just finally for me
07:54team news
07:55there's obviously
07:56a couple of
07:57slightly longer term
07:58but any fresh worries?
08:00Yeah we've got
08:00a couple of things
08:01which I wouldn't reveal
08:02at the moment Simon
08:03but obviously
08:06I've got
08:08Charlie Alcaraz
08:09is out.
08:12Is he back on the grass
08:14Charlie yet?
08:15Charlie's not back
08:16on the grass no.
08:17Seamus Coleman
08:17had picked up
08:18a little bit of a nick
08:19not serious
08:20just on
08:22what do we do
08:23with training?
08:24Friday.
08:26Seamus Coleman
08:27missed out at the weekend
08:28just with a little bit
08:30of a nick
08:30so we hope
08:31that he won't be
08:33available for this game
08:34but we're hoping
08:35that he's not going
08:35to be too long.
08:38Yeah if there's anything
08:39else we'll let you know.
08:41Thanks Simon
08:41we'll go to Julia
08:42already on those sides.
08:4521 points
08:46from the last 10
08:47away games
08:48obviously home tomorrow
08:49do you put that down
08:50to your away tactics
08:52being a bit more defensive
08:53and do you think
08:53people want to see
08:54that at home?
08:55Could you do the same
08:56at home?
08:57No I wouldn't
08:58put it down to that
08:58really.
08:59I'd put it down to
09:00we try to play the game
09:01and how we see it.
09:03But certainly
09:04we're home games
09:05we've tried to be
09:06on the front foot
09:07and try to be more aggressive
09:08and play better
09:10if we can
09:10and I think
09:11if you look at the games
09:12the early part of the season
09:13with Jack playing
09:14in LA
09:15and how we were playing
09:16in the opening part
09:16of the season
09:17we were very very good.
09:19I think since we've got
09:20to sort of December
09:21picked up the injuries
09:22the AFCON boys
09:24we've just sort of
09:25found it difficult
09:26and if you look back
09:27even things like
09:28the FA Cup team
09:29we had out
09:29and what we had
09:30available to us
09:31we've been really short
09:32we're beginning to get
09:34most of the players back
09:35and I think that
09:36that's making a difference
09:37so
09:39no we don't
09:40we don't intentionally
09:40go away from home
09:42to try and play differently
09:43than we do at home
09:43we
09:44we want to defend
09:45really well
09:46but we also want to
09:47attack really well
09:48if we can
09:48and
09:50probably more
09:50we've defended really well
09:52certainly away from home
09:54I think at home
09:55we're a little bit more open
09:56we're trying to find ways
09:57of winning games
09:59and
10:00in some ways
10:01that's cost us a little bit
10:03On that as well
10:03you know
10:04you've spoken about Burnley
10:05they scored seven goals
10:06in the last three games
10:0832 goals in total
10:09which is the same as yourself
10:10actually this season
10:11yet they find themselves
10:12in their bottom three
10:15again
10:15everyone wants to watch
10:16attacking football
10:17they want to watch
10:18exciting football
10:18but does that just show
10:19that Premier League success
10:20is built on your defence?
10:23I think if you look at
10:24I think the year before
10:25Brentford
10:26when they went up
10:26I think they had the best
10:27defensive record
10:28I think they hardly conceded
10:29any goals
10:29through the championship
10:30they were so so good
10:32and I probably expected
10:33Brentford to come in
10:34and have that
10:35that record behind them
10:37Burnley
10:39sorry
10:39Burnley had that record
10:41behind them
10:44but obviously
10:44their goals recently
10:45they're tally up
10:47I think you can only
10:49do what you've got
10:50you know
10:50we're trying to get better
10:51we're having Jack Grealish
10:52coming in
10:53Ciaran Dewsbury Hall
10:54coming in
10:54I think I've made a huge
10:56impression and
10:57indifference to the team
11:00we've needed to score
11:01more goals
11:02but I think our goals
11:04at the start of the season
11:04and were formed
11:05near the start of the season
11:06was probably the way
11:07we wanted it
11:07I think some games
11:08we've had to
11:09dig in
11:11but that's no different
11:12we're never going to become
11:14the Harlan Glover Trotters
11:15in a couple of weeks
11:18Beto and Barry
11:19you've spoken about
11:20they came on
11:22and played together
11:22against Manchester United
11:25at home
11:26given they were both
11:27on the score sheet
11:28at the weekend
11:29is that something
11:29you could see
11:30going forward?
11:33Possibly at times
11:34I think there's
11:35other factors
11:37that lead into that
11:38as you know
11:38other people are
11:39coming out the side
11:39and you're looking
11:40at different players
11:40if you do that as well
11:44it's probably
11:45been out of fashion
11:46two strikers now
11:47for I don't know
11:48maybe 20 years
11:50maybe
11:51maybe
11:52so it's interesting
11:54lots of things
11:54have come in
11:55long throws
11:55have come back
11:56in fashion
11:57you know
11:58lots of set piece goals
11:59are back in fashion
12:01so who knows
12:02two centre followers
12:03might be the future
12:05well we do it
12:06we may well do it
12:08when we need to
12:08but I don't think
12:09it's something
12:10I'd be doing
12:11all the time
12:11that's for sure
12:12you could set that
12:13fashion then
12:13it could do
12:15and I just wanted
12:16to ask Dwight
12:16McNeil came back
12:17obviously everyone
12:18knows the story
12:18about deadline day
12:19but for him to
12:20come back and have
12:20that impact
12:21in your starting
12:22line up at the
12:22weekend
12:22what does that say
12:23about him
12:24and what's he
12:25shown you
12:26well I didn't
12:26at any moment
12:27doubt Dwight
12:28whether he was
12:29going to Palace
12:30or whether he was
12:30staying here
12:31didn't Dwight
12:31at all
12:32how he would react
12:33how he would play
12:34he's just needed
12:35a little bit of time
12:36to settle back in
12:37and I said
12:38after the game
12:39Dwight trained
12:40really well
12:40last week
12:40so he got himself
12:42an opportunity
12:44we've been trying
12:45to find the right
12:45balance at the
12:46moment
12:47between the likes
12:48of Tyler Dibbling
12:50Tyreek George
12:51you know
12:52Ellie
12:53we've been trying
12:53to find the right
12:54moments
12:55and the right
12:55people
12:55Harrison
12:56at different
12:56times as well
12:59a lot of them
13:00are young boys
13:01and Dwight's
13:02just gave us
13:02that little bit
13:02more experience
13:06any further
13:07questions
13:07in the open
13:08section
13:08before we move
13:09on
13:09no
13:10ok
13:10thank you
