00:00David, by the time you play Manchester United, it'll be nearly two weeks since you faced
00:03Bournemouth.
00:04I know you would rather have been playing in that time, but at the same time, how useful
00:07has that break been for you?
00:10It's quite strange this year because we're getting breaks when we probably don't want
00:14them or don't need them, but only got ourselves to blame getting knocked out of the FA Cup
00:19on penalties, so nobody to blame but myself.
00:22Obviously no Jake O'Brien this weekend as well.
00:24What do you weigh up when deciding who's going to replace him, because obviously James Garner
00:28can move there from midfield, and you do have options there, but there's also Nathan
00:31Patterson and I don't know, is Seamus Coleman fit and available as well?
00:34Yeah, Seamus is fit and available as well, so we've got people we can choose, so we'll
00:40move on from it.
00:41You get sent off and these things happen.
00:44You're on 37 points now, just three points off what used to be the magical mark of 40.
00:49What indication of progress is that for you?
00:51I think it's a big progress certainly on recent seasons and we've probably got to our points
00:56total a little bit quicker than maybe we have done in the past.
01:01But we want to keep it going, we don't want to let it slip now.
01:03We want to keep going and we want to try and challenge for the positions higher up the league
01:08if we can, so we want that to continue.
01:13How different a Manchester United are you facing now under the charge of Michael Carrick, obviously,
01:18compared to what you faced at Old Trafford earlier this season?
01:20I don't think there's any player changes, that's for sure.
01:23I think it's roughly the same players just about as what Ruben had when he was in charge.
01:29I think Michael's come in and done a brilliant job, I really do.
01:31I think he's sort of freshened the players up by the looks of it and certainly freshened
01:38up the support as well in the way they're getting some victories.
01:41Just to reflect on that famous win earlier this season, how stressful was it because
01:45you obviously had Seamus Colmer going off early to deal with, it was the altercation
01:49between Michael and Idrissa but at the same time you then went on and took all three points?
01:53Yeah, it seems a long time ago but it was a hugely important three points because you
01:58know you have to try and pick up wins when you can and it didn't look likely on the night
02:01when we went down to ten men and we got a really good goal, Kiernan I think it was who
02:06got
02:07the good goal that night and we done well enough to hang on to it so it was really important
02:11three points and these three points coming up are important again.
02:16Good luck.
02:17Thanks Finney, we'll go to Simon at Premier League Productions.
02:19How you doing Simon?
02:20Good, thank you.
02:21You managed Michael for a while as well, did you ever see this in him, he's the consummate
02:26pro isn't he?
02:27Yeah, he was a really good professional and I think I was more impressed by the work he's
02:33done when he was at Middlesbrough, I think he's done a great job when he was at Middlesbrough
02:35and his team has played good stuff and I thought he'd done very well there so he's going into
02:43the job and looks as if he's doing it in a calm manner and going about the job very well.
02:48Has he ever been in touch with you?
02:49No, I spoke to Michael in the summer about a couple of things but it was just really
02:56about a player and different things but nothing else.
02:59Ten years seems like a lifetime ago now, that's how I'll probably just go over that isn't
03:04it, since you were at Manchester United.
03:06How would you say you've changed between then and now?
03:12It's the way life takes it isn't it, everything in life is always going to be very good, I
03:19had a great time there even though it lasted for a very short period but I also had things
03:26where I wish I could have done better and if I got another go at it then I think I
03:31would
03:31have done things slightly different but that's what happens when you always look back at things
03:35you always think how you might have changed it but overall I really enjoyed my experience
03:39of managing there.
03:40A bit more how you've changed as a person from now to now?
03:44Yeah, in some ways I think I'm probably in as good a place as I've been but I'm also in
03:50a place which I know I want to work and I want to be there and the people want me
03:54here as
03:55well so that makes me feel much more welcoming and I enjoy my work here.
04:01I think I'm more experienced, I've had other moments in football, I've had the chance to
04:07win a trophy in Europe, I've got to some semi-finals and quarter-finals, I've seen other things
04:12in my time in Spain etc so I think I'm probably sitting here much more experienced than say
04:18I was 10 or 12 years ago, however long ago it was.
04:21We know you've still got an edge which we'll try never to step out of the line for because
04:26we don't want to be on the wrong side of it but would you say you're a much more I
04:31suppose
04:31relaxed person and more comfortable?
04:33Yeah, I believe I am but others might say not, probably my wife might not say not but
04:39overall yeah I think with age you do, I think most people in life will tell you you sort of
04:44mellow a little bit but the big thing here is keep your energy up, keep the focus, keep doing the
04:50right
04:50things. I'm seeing people like Martin O'Neill going back into the job at Celtic and I think Martin's
04:5572 or 73 so I feel young again that's for sure and there is a little bit of resurgence of
05:03sort of more experienced managers just beginning to pop their head up again and you know I don't
05:09feel that old at the moment, I feel young and the players I work with make me young as well.
05:13And talking of energy just finally for me, the fans are looking to bring it on Monday night,
05:18they're planning on loads of banners and flags and atmosphere to get it up to scratch, what
05:22difference could that make for you and the players?
05:25It will be hugely helpful and it will be hugely appreciated if they do because anything we can
05:32get at the moment to help us because at home at the moment it's felt difficult for whatever reason
05:37that may be. I think there's a lot of generalisations I can say which I've probably said in many interviews,
05:44you know, new home, it's never that easy, you know, new surroundings, other teams enjoying it,
05:48all those things. But the people who make football clubs are the supporters and inside the stadium
05:55they're the ones who make the big difference and if they can help make a difference on Monday night
05:59that will be very much appreciated.
06:06You spoke there about the importance of the three points at Old Trafford earlier on this season but
06:10aside from the three points, how significant was it in terms of, you know, the belief that it can give
06:15a team and the players that they belong on a stage like that and at that end of the table?
06:20Well, I think the big thing I've wanted us to do here at Everton was to make sure that we
06:25were
06:25competitive with the so-called bigger teams or the teams who are near the top of the league.
06:30And I think we've tried to do that. We've not won all the games we've done it but I think
06:33we have
06:34been competitive. On the night we were, on the night we showed resilience but it was a huge win
06:40for us at the time because we were sort of trying to keep up with everybody and we have been
06:44all
06:44season we've been trying to sort of retain our position, our strong position and in the main we've
06:50done so. We did one or two blips but obviously the three points on that night at Old Trafford was
06:56a
06:57huge, huge boost for us. And obviously you want to stay in that mix for European places possibly,
07:02but how difficult is it we saw Wolves against Arsenal in midweek? I mean, has the Premier League
07:08ever been this competitive? I actually have been laughing at quite a few of the people who've been
07:12talking about it and have been listening to a bit and I'm thinking is, unless you're actually
07:15sitting in the seat as the manager of one of the clubs, you're not understanding how difficult the
07:20games are, the level of the games, the teams. You know, we played Wolves here a few weeks ago
07:25and we got a draw, we played Leeds here, we could only draw. You know, we played Tiedons where maybe
07:31you think, even Bournemouth were lost to, people are thinking that you'll turn up and you'll roll
07:37these teams over. The games are so, so difficult at the moment. And yeah, by the way, there is one
07:42or
07:42two teams who might blow all the teams away in the league, there might be. But in the main,
07:46most of the teams have been very competitive, very little between them. You know, before we played
07:52Bournemouth, I think Bournemouth were really unlucky not to beat Aston Villa at home. You know,
07:57when Aston Villa got a draw out, I think, and ended up coming up here, we thought we were a
08:01bit unlucky
08:01not to beat Bournemouth on the night, but they ended up turning us over. So the games are very close
08:06and pretty unpredictable at the moment. And that's why it's difficult for, you know, aside from the top
08:11three or four teams to be able to put three or four wins together. It's just so difficult.
08:16It is, you know, and I'm sort of looking and saying, no, going to Wolves, why would it be easy
08:22for
08:23Arsenal to just turn up and think that they're going to do that? And now everybody thinks Man City's
08:27going to win all the games between now and the end of the season. They may well do. But I
08:32think
08:32you've got to forget what I've said is there's a lot of teams in the Premier League who are showing
08:35good form and very hard to beat. Thanks, Ian. We'll go to Carl at the Press Association.
08:43Just following on from us, David. Hi, David. You spoke about how difficult the Premier League is,
08:49but I'm just wondering this sort of spell you're now entering, you know, the next nine games,
08:53I think you play five at the top six. How crucial a spell is that? Is that going to be
08:59for you?
09:00And how difficult will it be? Yeah, well, it depends how crucial you're looking at it and
09:04you're thinking about it. Is it? I think this time last year, the nine games I had to play,
09:08I'd have been saying, my goodness, how am I going to get any wins to stay in the Premier League?
09:11I think we've probably got over that completely. I think the challenge now is, can we change
09:18mentality? Can we change the whole direction we're going in? Well, we're not going to be that team
09:24anymore. We're not planning to be a team who's fighting relegation. We're a team who are planning
09:27to try and challenge the teams in Europe. And to do that, I said a few weeks ago, we're going
09:32to have
09:32to win some big games in the running. I don't know if we're quite in the word running yet. I
09:37don't know
09:37when the running might begin, but I would think it was probably maybe when you got under 10 games,
09:43maybe down to nine or eight games, something like that. I might call that the run-in, possibly.
09:48But I know what you mean at the moment. We're in a batch of big games.
09:54Look, we'll get everybody fit, bar Jack Grealish. So we're probably in as good a physical
10:00shape as far as that goes. We've got a bit of disruption with game times, you know, when we're
10:05playing, or we might have 10 or 12 days off, or we might have different bits in this part of
10:10the
10:10season, then suddenly we might have three games in eight days. So we've not got a particularly
10:15consistent calendar regarding the games, but we've certainly got hard games to come.
10:22Thanks, Carl. We'll go to Will.
10:26Hi, Xavier. Just ask how the last two weeks the sort of time off has been for the squads
10:30of being a bit of time off, and just time to work yourself on the training grounds as well.
10:35Yeah, yeah, all of that. It's actually not easy for a manager when you get the long periods off,
10:41because, you know, it's not what we're planning, you know, sometimes the scheduling changes.
10:49Even this game, you know, we're on to Monday instead of maybe a Saturday or a Sunday, possibly.
10:54But all that changes as well. So, yeah, we've had all what you've said.
10:58I know you said after Bournemouth that maybe Illuminati come back a little bit slow from
11:02Acon. Do you think he's one who will benefit from this break-in?
11:05I hope so. I hope so. I think that hopefully they've now got themselves back into the speed of it.
11:12I thought both of them had started to pick up a little bit in the last game they started.
11:17Both started to show they were getting back more to what I felt, the speed of the Premier League
11:20and the intensity of what's required here.
11:22Just ask about Tyler Diplom. He was 20 earlier this week, I think, Tyler Diplom.
11:27Yeah. I mean, you know, he's 20 and I know he came in for a fee, but it's easy to
11:34forget
11:34how young he is at 20. You look up, say, where Indy was or Jeff Grealish was in Juby Hall,
11:39was it? 20 to 200 miles away. Do that sort of things have to take into account?
11:45I think it's one who we're saying is we think we've got a really good, talented player on our hands.
11:49We need him to develop and get used to us a little bit. You know, he'll probably need
11:53a bit of time and, you know, even me looking towards at the start of next season, you know,
11:59I'm saying, you know, pre-season friendlies, etc. All those things will help get him more
12:03established than when we got him in. But look, he's beginning to learn a lot more about us.
12:09He'll get game time, I'm sure, between now and the end of the season. So it's good. I didn't
12:14realise it was his birthday. I feel terrible now because I didn't realise it.
12:17Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's a quiet boy, as you can see.
