00:00Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're looking at the most notable instances where celebrities turned their spotlight, and sometimes
00:07their wrath, on regular people.
00:10We are afraid for the safety of our shopkeepers. Kelly Clarkson has put us in danger.
00:15Hillary Duff vs. Dieter Addison.
00:17Living next to a celebrity sounds glamorous until they blast you on Instagram to their millions of followers.
00:24Before we swept us under the bed and we became practically roommates.
00:28In May 2018, Hillary Duff posted a series of Instagram stories calling out her neighbor, Dieter Addison, accusing him of
00:36smoking throughout the night, making excessive noise, and leaving rubbish throughout their shared building.
00:42Calling all New Yorkers with neighbors. Really open to any advice you have. My neighbor smokes cigarettes and weed all
00:51night long. My apartment reeks. Seriously, what do I do?
00:56Duff's representative said the problem had dragged on for months, despite attempts to resolve it through the building's landlords.
01:03Duff also made personal jabs at Addison, including comments mocking him for being financially dependent on his parents.
01:10We know your parents pay your rent. We know you've never worked a day in your life. You must be
01:14nice. Have some respect for your neighbors who work hard to live in that building.
01:18According to Addison, it was actually Duff and her partner, Matthew Coma, who were the troublemakers.
01:24He cited an incident, which later involved the police, where Coma had allegedly barged into his apartment and physically assaulted
01:31him.
01:32Why are you going to social media with this? First of all, you're showing to your fans and followers that
01:36you have a short fuse and that you, you know, can't handle conflict.
01:39And it's just knock on the door sometimes. Hey, can you hold the noise down? I've had that situation before.
01:45Lizzo versus Tiffany Wells.
01:54It's perfectly understandable to get annoyed over a missing food order, but most of us complain to customer service, not
02:00to our millions of Twitter followers.
02:02In September 2019, Lizzo took to social media after her food allegedly wasn't delivered.
02:08She posted a screenshot of the delivery driver's details and tweeted,
02:13This girl Tiffany W stole my food. She lucky I don't fight no more.
02:17The post quickly drew criticism because identifying a gig worker to millions of people endangered both her safety and livelihood.
02:24Truth hurts me to something more exciting.
02:30Lizzo deleted the tweet and apologized, acknowledging that she had used her platform irresponsibly.
02:36The delivery driver, Tiffany Wells, later sued the singer, alleging libel and invasion of privacy.
02:43The case was eventually settled out of court.
02:50Kelly Clarkson versus Art of Play.
02:58A mechanical bird became the unlikely star of a celebrity versus small business dispute in October 2026.
03:06Kelly Clarkson said Brooklyn shop Art of Play treated her condescendingly when she asked about Molly,
03:12an elaborate singing automaton, comparing the experience to the boutique snub scene in Pretty Woman.
03:18How much is this, Marie?
03:19It's very expensive.
03:21It's very expensive.
03:23Look, I got money to spend in here.
03:26I don't think we have anything for you.
03:29You're obviously in the wrong place.
03:31Please leave.
03:33The shop's co-owner, Adam Rubin, said Molly was a unique fixture used in magic shows and was not for
03:39sale,
03:40though he said staff offered to connect Clarkson with its creator or suggest alternatives.
03:46Rubin said the singer's posts triggered a barrage of online abuse and threats against the store.
03:51This is an insane misunderstanding.
03:54Nothing happened in this shop to justify her scolding our shopkeeper on the way out, but I could let that
04:00go.
04:00You know, everybody has a bad day, but things changed when she used her platform to attack us.
04:06Later on, CCTV footage from the incident was released, which, depending on who you ask,
04:11either confirmed Clarkson's side of the story or proved she was a liar.
04:14The whole interaction lasts seconds, and she goes off into the corner.
04:21The shopkeeper goes in the other direction, and what happens?
04:26He's pointing, but her back is turned.
04:30Celebrity drama is everywhere, but the best place to watch it is right here on the Ms. Mojo 24-7

04:46Justin Bieber vs. The Schwartzes
04:49Some neighborly disagreements end with a polite note.
04:53Justin Bieber's 2014 clash with Jeffrey and Suzanne Schwartz ended in criminal court.
04:58Prosecutors said Bieber egged the Schwartzes' Calabasas home in January,
05:03causing thousands of dollars in damage.
05:05But a cowardly thug who would egg a man's house and terrify a young girl.
05:09I've got another one for you, actually.
05:11Yeah, come right over here, you f***ing f***er.
05:13Call the cop.
05:14Hi, I'd like to, uh, place an assault.
05:17Cops did show up, and Bieber's being investigated for vandalism.
05:21The incident led investigators to search Bieber's house,
05:24and the singer later pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vandalism.
05:28He was ordered to pay $80,000 in restitution, complete probation,
05:32anger management sessions, and community service,
05:35and stay away from the Schwartzes for two years.
05:38No cameras were allowed in the Van Nuys courtroom, and Bieber was a no-show,
05:43but tweeted out this photo even as celebrity attorney Sean Hawley
05:46was accepting a plea deal on his behalf.
05:49It wasn't a prolonged social media back and forth,
05:51but the escalation from a petty neighborhood act to a court order
05:55made the dispute one of the most notorious episodes of Bieber's early adulthood.
05:59Yeah, I know that I let you down.
06:02It's too late to say I'm sorry now.
06:07I'm sorry.
06:08Demi Lovato vs. The Big Chill.
06:11The Big Chill is an unassuming mom-and-pop frozen yogurt store
06:14located in this strip mall in Los Angeles.
06:16It's been a local favorite for more than 20 years.
06:18Besides yogurt, the shop also sells sugar-free snacks,
06:22and that's apparently what made Demi so upset.
06:25A frozen yogurt run turned into a PR headache
06:28when Demi Lovato criticized Los Angeles shop The Big Chill in April 2021.
06:33Taking to her Instagram, the singer complained that customers
06:37had to pass sugar-free cookies and other diet products before ordering,
06:41calling the shop, quote, diet culture vultures.
06:44That she was finding it extremely hard to order froyo from The Big Chill,
06:48when you have to walk past tons of sugar-free cookies,
06:51diet foods, before you get to the counter.
06:53The business replied to her privately,
06:55stating that its varied menu served customers with needs including diabetes,
07:00celiac disease, and vegan diets.
07:02Lovato shared those messages with the shop and defended her criticism.
07:06However, after receiving backlash online,
07:09she then posted an apology,
07:10saying she could have handled the situation better.
07:13My intentions were not to come in and bully a small business.
07:19That was not it.
07:20The debacle brought the small business a flood of supportive attention,
07:23although its owners later said Lovato had not contacted them privately after the apology.
07:29James Corden vs. Balthazar staff.
07:31Getting banned from a restaurant is a remarkable achievement for anyone,
07:35but especially for a famous television host.
07:37As some of you may have seen, last week there were stories about me being banned from a restaurant.
07:45And at the time I considered, you know, like, tweeting about it or Instagramming about it.
07:51In October 2022, Balthazar owner Keith McNally publicly announced he was banning James Corden
07:57from his upscale New York City establishment,
08:00calling him, quote,
08:02This was allegedly due to the comedian mistreating staff on two occasions.
08:07Once involving a hair in Corden's food,
08:10the other concerning an omelet ordered for his wife,
08:13which came with fries instead of salad.
08:15As her meal came wrong to the table the third time,
08:19in the heat of the moment,
08:20I made,
08:21I made a sarcastic, rude comment, right?
08:24About cooking it myself.
08:26And it is a comment I deeply regret.
08:29Corden called McNally to apologize and the ban was lifted within a day.
08:33The story flared again after Corden discussed it in an interview,
08:37prompting him to address the incident on his show
08:39and admit he had been rude and, quote,
08:42ungracious.
08:43I've been walking around thinking that I hadn't done anything wrong, right?
08:46But the truth is, like I have,
08:48I made a rude comment and it was wrong.
08:51It was an unnecessary comment.
08:53It was ungracious to the server.
08:55Sean Connery versus Dr. Burton Sultan.
08:58Even James Bond, it seems,
09:00can make for a terrible neighbor.
09:02Stop it, Professor.
09:03I'm behind you.
09:09It's funny I thought you'd turn up some real later.
09:12Sit down.
09:13In 2005,
09:14New York ophthalmologist Dr. Burton Sultan sued Sean Connery,
09:19alleging that renovations undertaken at their shared Manhattan townhouse
09:22had made his life genuinely miserable.
09:26Sultan's lawsuit described persistent noise,
09:28noxious fumes,
09:30water leaks,
09:30and a full-blown rat infestation,
09:33all attributed to Connery's construction work.
09:35The people see it this way.
09:37There's really only so much you can do
09:40in terms of trying to change their view of something.
09:42Beyond the physical damage,
09:44Sultan painted a portrait of the actor as a tyrant,
09:47claiming Connery regularly cranked up music to harass and intimidate him,
09:51all in a bid to force him out so he could buy his unit at a discount.
09:55Connery and his family counter-sued,
09:57insisting that Sultan was the tyrant.
09:59Both cases were ultimately dismissed,
10:01with the judge reprimanding both men.
10:03Seriously, I think that it's the last resort.
10:06He's not going to do it because he wants to do it.
10:11Wait till people see this interview.
10:13Are you going to get mail?
10:14Elon Musk versus Vernon Unsworth.
10:16We got the Thai authorities to understand that,
10:19you know, they needed expert divers out here.
10:24You know, because cave diving is, it's specialists.
10:28When a group of boys were trapped inside the Tam Luang cave complex in Thailand in 2018,
10:33the world watched anxiously.
10:36Elon Musk proposed a mini submarine as a rescue solution.
10:40However, British cave diver Vernon Unsworth,
10:43who had direct experience with the cave system,
10:46gave an interview where he dismissed the idea as a mere publicity stunt.
10:50He basically, he treated it as an insult.
10:54And insults are basically an instant reaction,
10:57you know, like you and me here this morning.
10:59But he went out and researched before he sent those tweets.
11:04Musk took that criticism personally.
11:06On Twitter, he attacked Unsworth, calling him a derisive term,
11:11and even reportedly hired a private investigator to dig up dirt on the diver.
11:15You use your tweeting to kind of get back at critics.
11:19Rarely.
11:19You kind of have little wars with the press.
11:22Twitter is a war zone.
11:23If somebody's going to jump in the war zone,
11:26it's like, okay, you're in the arena.
11:27Let's go.
11:28Unsworth later sued for defamation,
11:30and the case went to trial in 2019.
11:33Ultimately, the jury found Musk not liable,
11:36accepting the argument that the tweet was an insult
11:38rather than a defamatory factual claim.
11:41Musk did issue a July 18th apology through tweets saying,
11:45Unsworth actions against me do not justify my actions against him.
11:49And for that, I apologize to Unsworth
11:50and to the companies I represent as leader.
11:53The fault is mine and mine alone.
11:55Katy Perry versus the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
11:58A pop star, a group of elderly nuns, and a Los Angeles convent.
12:03This feud had storylines not even Ryan Murphy could have invented.
12:07This property is spectacular.
12:09You can see why there is competition to own it.
12:12But unfortunately for the Catholic Church,
12:15that competition has turned into a rather tawdry and unholy dispute.
12:20In 2015, Katy Perry sought to purchase a former convent
12:23previously owned by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
12:26for $14.5 million.
12:29However, the nuns firmly opposed the offer
12:31and pursued a competing sale to restaurateur Dana Hollister.
12:36So Katy Perry gave the nuns a private performance
12:39and sung a gospel song for them to try and sort of like ease it in,
12:42like, come on nuns, let me have the hour.
12:45But it was a bit unsuccessful.
12:47They didn't change their mind.
12:48The Archdiocese of Los Angeles supported Perry's bid,
12:51and the dispute dragged through years of bitter litigation.
12:54In March 2018, 89-year-old Sister Catherine Rose Holtzman
12:59publicly pleaded with Perry to stop pursuing the convent.
13:03Mere hours later, Holtzman collapsed during a court appearance and died.
13:07Sister Catherine Rose served the church with dedication and love for many years,
13:12and today we remember her life with gratitude.
13:15In the end, the nuns' sale was invalidated,
13:17and Perry's purchase was approved.
13:19Gwyneth Paltrow vs. Terry Sanderson
13:22In February 2016, retired optometrist Terry Sanderson
13:26alleged that actress Gwyneth Paltrow crashed into him at Deer Valley Resort in Utah,
13:32leaving him with serious injuries, including a traumatic brain injury.
13:36I couldn't move my head.
13:37I couldn't move my body.
13:40He says he didn't realize it was the Oscar winner
13:42until one of his buddies told him.
13:45Did you think it was cool?
13:47To collide with a celebrity?
13:49Absolutely not, no.
13:51Paltrow denied being at fault and countersued Sanderson for a single dollar,
13:55arguing the collision was entirely his doing.
13:58This would result in a protracted legal showdown between both parties.
14:02In 2023, the case went to court and the trial became a cultural phenomenon,
14:07with daily coverage and obsessive public debate
14:09over everything from courtroom fashion to legal strategy.
14:12I think Gwyneth's outfits are actually helping her with the jury.
14:16They're all very everyday.
14:18She's not screaming celebrity through her outfits,
14:20and that's because she's refraining from color,
14:22she's refraining from glamour.
14:24Everything is very easy, very effortless.
14:26After deliberating for just over two hours,
14:29the jury found Sanderson entirely at fault
14:31and awarded Paltrow the dollar she requested.
14:34She graciously wished him well as she left the court.
14:37Her exact words, I wish you well.
14:40Very kind of her.
14:41That's all she said?
14:41That's all she said.
14:42Okay, and did you respond?
14:44I said thank you, dear.
14:47What other messy feuds did we miss?
14:50Let us know in the comments.
