The Alaskan wood frog possesses one of the most incredible survival abilities in the entire animal kingdom. During the brutal northern winter, temperatures plummet far below freezing. Instead of migrating or digging deep underground, this tiny creature simply sits on the forest floor and allows itself to freeze completely solid.

Nearly two thirds of the water in the frog's body turns into ice. Its heart stops beating, its lungs stop breathing, and its brain activity completely ceases. For all scientific intents and purposes, the wood frog is clinically dead for up to seven months at a time.

To survive this extreme state, the frog floods its internal organs with high concentrations of glucose. This natural sugar acts like biological antifreeze, preventing ice crystals from destroying its delicate cells. When spring arrives, the frog thaws from the inside out and simply hops away.
