In eighteen thirty eight, a French pastry chef living in Mexico claimed that Mexican officers looted his bakery in Tacubaya. He demanded a massive compensation of sixty thousand pesos for his ruined shop and pastries. When the Mexican government refused to pay this absurd amount, the chef appealed to King Louis Philippe of France.
Seizing the chance to collect unpaid debts and assert influence in Latin America, France sent a powerful naval fleet to blockade Mexican ports and attack the fortress of San Juan de Ulua. This strange conflict became famously known as the Pastry War.
Mexico eventually agreed to pay the sixty thousand pesos to end the blockade and restore trade. It remains one of the most bizarre military interventions triggered entirely by a bakery dispute and royal stubbornness.
