The Texas horned lizard possesses one of the most unusual defense mechanisms in the animal kingdom. When cornered by predators like coyotes or foxes, this small reptile can squirt a stream of foul tasting blood directly from its eyes. This extreme strategy is used as a last resort when camouflage and spiky armor fail to deter an attack.

To perform this trick, the lizard restricts the blood flow leaving its head. This rapidly increases blood pressure within the small blood vessels around its eyelids. The sudden pressure causes tiny membranes to rupture, firing a stream of blood up to nine feet away with surprising accuracy.

Chemical compounds mixed into the blood taste horrific to canine predators, causing them to drop the lizard instantly. While losing blood drains the lizard's energy, the clever reptile can safely recover and live to see another day. Nature has evolved incredible ways for small creatures to survive against much larger hunters.
