The pistol shrimp looks harmless at just a couple of inches long, but it possesses one of the most extreme weapons in the animal kingdom. Found in shallow tropical reefs worldwide, this tiny crustacean has one oversized claw that acts like a loaded spring.
When prey approaches, the shrimp snaps its claw shut at lightning speed. This motion does not strike the victim directly. Instead, it ejects a high speed jet of water traveling at over sixty miles per hour. The rapid drop in pressure creates a tiny vapor bubble through a process called cavitation.
As surrounding water collapses this bubble, temperatures inside briefly surge to over eight thousand degrees Fahrenheit. This extreme collapse produces a bright flash of light and an ear splitting crack exceeding two hundred decibels, instantly stunning small fish and crabs. Colonies of pistol shrimp create so much noise they can even scramble naval submarine sonar.
Nature engineered a creature that hunts using the physics of acoustic shockwaves. Would you ever keep one in an aquarium?
