00:00Hi there.
00:01The Met Office have named Storm Austin the first named storm of this season due to hit
00:06the UK on Thursday night into Friday.
00:08Ahead of that, we've got, well, increasingly wet and increasingly windy weather to come
00:14over the next few days.
00:15A succession of weather fronts and low pressure systems waiting to arrive from the Atlantic.
00:20Here's the first one.
00:21An expanding area of rain across many parts of the UK leading to a damp and gloomy day
00:27with some heavy rain dotted around, especially through the Midlands, northwest England, southwestern
00:32parts of the Highlands.
00:33Ahead of it, some dry weather for the far east of England, northeast Scotland, breezy here
00:39with a lot of cloud.
00:40The brightest skies will be across Northern Ireland, parts of Pembrokeshire perhaps, Cornwall,
00:45some parts of Devon seeing a few glimmers of brightness.
00:48And temperatures up into the mid-teens and the southwest but struggling to get into the
00:53teens elsewhere.
00:54We've got that persistent rain and the thick and low cloud persisting.
00:59The weather front does make some progress north and east through the evening, but the
01:03next one arrives into Northern Ireland, parts of Wales and the southwest.
01:08And it will be accompanied by increasingly strong winds towards the southwest.
01:12Some heavy bursts of rain, particularly over the Welsh mountains, the moors of the southwest,
01:17and it's damp for northeast Scotland overnight.
01:20But in between, some clear spells for the Midlands, East Anglia and the southeast.
01:23Wherever you are, temperatures tending to stay around 8 to 12 Celsius given all of the weather
01:30that's going to be taking place.
01:32Now at the time of recording, Austin is barely a speck on the pressure chart.
01:39It's going to develop rapidly later this week.
01:41But ahead of it, we've got another developing area of low pressure to start off Wednesday.
01:47You can see complex weather fronts wrapped around this.
01:51And as it develops, we'll have a zone of really quite heavy rain through Wales, then into the
01:56Midlands as we start off Wednesday.
01:58The rain clears the far southwest as well as Northern Ireland, but strong winds will be
02:04expected here with coastal gales, 50 mph plus wind gusts around the shores of southwest England
02:11and southwest Wales.
02:12I don't think we'll see many inland gales, but it will be breezy throughout Wednesday in the southwest.
02:18Lighter winds around some of these central parts of the UK, but here we've got the heavy rain moving through.
02:23Of course, we need the rain, so a lot of this will be welcome news.
02:26It is slow moving, a wet day for many.
02:29East Anglia tending to stay out of it until later.
02:32And Scotland, Northern Ireland, a more showery picture, although northeast Scotland seeing
02:37some persistent damp weather.
02:39And temperatures similar to Tuesday, talking about 11 to 14 Celsius generally.
02:44Again, the highest temps down towards the far southwest, 15 degrees, but a windier feel
02:49to things compared with Tuesday.
02:51Here's that rain, very slowly edging its way eastwards.
02:55So, like I say, some useful rain for those parts of the country where we desperately need
03:00wet weather, and then it turns very lively towards the southwest.
03:04Brisk winds and some heavy, thundery showers arriving later Wednesday and continuing overnight.
03:11Now, this is only the prelude ahead of Storm Austin, which at this time will be developing
03:17rapidly out over the Atlantic as it gets swept up by the jet stream.
03:22And you can see it moves on to the cold side of the jet stream, and that's where we see
03:26all
03:26these isobars start to appear, a very deep area of low pressure, quickly escalating as it reaches
03:32the southwest of the UK.
03:34The strongest winds around the southern flank of the low, and I expect we'll see fairly widely
03:40around coasts, gales developing during the early hours of Friday with wind gusts of 50
03:45to 70 miles an hour, perhaps a little more for some of the most exposed parts of the
03:49far southwest during the early hours of Friday.
03:51And then wind gusts of 50 miles an hour or slightly more extending fairly widely into inland parts
03:58of the southwest, into parts of West Wales, as well as later on the far south of England.
04:04So this is the zone where we're likely to see the strongest winds.
04:07Wind warning in force, the storm has been named.
04:10Expect some impacts if you are in the southwest and for parts of Wales as well.
04:16We'll keep you updated right here on the YouTube channel for all the latest.
