What is the script for a Washington Commanders victory tonight against the San Francisco 49ers?
Transcript
00:00Being out here in San Francisco, talking about warm.
00:02Listen, the weather yesterday was pretty good.
00:04It was like, you know, 60s and kind of overcast, but nothing crazy.
00:10But, dude, you're surrounded by the bay and the ocean,
00:13and it's just like this wet wind, if that makes sense.
00:18Like, it's just, it's not cold out here, but, like, you always got to have a jacket.
00:23You know what I mean?
00:24Gotcha.
00:25And that's going to kind of be the scene tonight.
00:27That stadium will be electric, and I think fans better be ready for that.
00:32These Niner fans don't mess around.
00:35They have a cray-cray.
00:36They're 5-0, hosting Monday Night Football.
00:40Washington's got to be ready.
00:41What is the script for a win tonight?
00:44Let's start with our guy, Jonesy in D.C.
00:47Jonesy, what's up, buddy?
00:49All is, what's going on, man?
00:51I saw you on Channel 4, man.
00:53You ain't no jacket on, so it can't be that daggone cool out there, Joker.
00:56What, this morning?
00:58I had a vest on and the long sleeves.
01:01Uh-huh.
01:02Yeah, I got another bone to pick with you, too, but that's another time.
01:05I say that for bleepy 30.
01:07Anyway, check this out.
01:09What we got to do...
01:13Look here.
01:14What we got to do is bring our A game tonight, for real, play some mistake-free football, negate the
01:22penalties, you know, especially when it comes to big play, man.
01:27Illegal motion, illegal formation, offside this.
01:32Come on.
01:32We got to come and play like we know we can play and win this game.
01:38We can get this game.
01:39The idea is to get out the Brock Purdy.
01:42Yep.
01:43Run the ball when you have the ball.
01:47Long, sustained drives can help you out, too.
01:51Just got to put it together, baby.
01:52That's what I have to say, fellas.
01:54Man, y'all have a great day.
01:55Love the show, as always.
01:58Y'all, we got...
01:59All right, bro.
01:59Appreciate you, Jonesy.
02:01Dude, I mean, you want to talk about getting after Brock Purdy.
02:05I believe...
02:05Tishler told me this stat, so I want to give him credit, and if he's wrong, take it up with
02:09him.
02:10Purdy hasn't been sacked in the second half of a game this year.
02:14All right, until this week.
02:16Purdy's only been sacked three times through five games.
02:18Yeah, that's saying a lot.
02:21Dude, he's throwing a touchdown on 9% of his passes.
02:26Every 9%.
02:27Now, granted, he's throwing a lot.
02:28I mean, he's got 142 attempts, but 13 touchdowns, just two picks.
02:34I mean, his QBR...
02:35So, the QBR stat, imagine on a scale of 0 to 100, 100 being perfect, right?
02:43What is the chance you're giving your team to win?
02:47So, a good QBR is 65, right?
02:51He's at 84.
02:52Wow.
02:53Doug, they've only played five games.
02:54Some of this is going to even out.
02:56They are the best offense in football on third downs.
02:59They've converted over half of their third downs for first downs.
03:02Best offense in football in the red zone.
03:0514 times into the red zone.
03:07I'm sorry, 16 times into the red zone.
03:0914 touchdowns, Brian.
03:11Wow.
03:12Let's check in with Anthony in Martinsville.
03:15Anthony, what's the script for a win tonight?
03:18Hey, guys.
03:19How y'all doing today?
03:20We're good.
03:22Listen, it's so good to hear from y'all.
03:23Y'all not going to believe this, man.
03:24I swear to God, this just happened.
03:26I'm sitting outside the coffee shop.
03:27You walk by, and he looks just like Jerry Jones.
03:31Mr. Tank, he didn't even say nothing.
03:32I just looked at him.
03:33And when I looked at him, he kind of did that nod, like, yeah, I know.
03:36And he kept walking.
03:38I'm like, I swear to God, man.
03:40You might have somebody nod at you from across the room.
03:43You can't see what they're saying, but they get the message.
03:45He was looking at me like, yeah, I know.
03:47I always get that.
03:49Well, he on the L.L. Bean, like, you know, overcoat.
03:53And I was like, whoa, what is this?
03:55No, hold on.
03:55I got to pull this thread.
03:57Anthony, you're down in Martinsville, Virginia,
03:59and you're telling me you saw Jerry Jones this morning in an L.L. Bean coat at Starbucks?
04:03He was walking around looking like he's small.
04:05You say he looked like him.
04:07Yeah, he looked like him, and he was like, yeah, I know.
04:10He looked like him.
04:12Yeah, I know.
04:12What can I do?
04:13It ain't nothing I can do about it.
04:16But, look, I think that we need to – I want to see us put Vincent in the backfield,
04:20help with blocking.
04:21All I need is four yards and a cloud of dust when it comes to running the ball.
04:24I don't need 20, 30, 40, 50-yard run plays.
04:27That would be nice.
04:28But I need to play keep-away.
04:29I need us to play keep-away offense to keep their offense off the field.
04:34And then I know that y'all saying blitz Brock Purdy, but I'm thinking if everybody – if he's the
04:40quarterback that everybody's saying he is right now, then make him beat us.
04:43Just stop the run game.
04:45Just sell out for the run game and make him have to throw the ball.
04:49And, yeah, he might get a couple quick passes here and there, but you're going to have to make him
04:54beat our defense and stop their run game.
04:57If we stop their run game 100% or 80% of their run game and we slow the game
05:04down to where we just get in four yards every run play
05:07and might do a seven-yard pass or whatever and we keep the ball, and God forbid that we get
05:12Terry McLaurin five or six catches in the first half
05:15to where he's really in the game, I feel like this is the formula for us to win.
05:19Take them out of the game.
05:20Don't let them get any momentum.
05:22Don't let them get up by two scores.
05:23Keep it close.
05:24All right.
05:25Appreciate it, man.
05:26I like that.
05:27That's a good call.
05:28Shout out to fake Jerry Jones in Martinsville.
05:31Brian, phone lines are open, 800-636-1067, 800-636-1067.
05:37How does Washington get a win tonight?
05:39What is the script?
05:40I'll also ask Stallion and Jeff that question.
05:42B, I did want to mention this.
05:45So Friday night in College Park, you know how these award ceremonies go is some of the other guys show
05:53up for their guys.
05:54And so some of Maryland's other Hall of Famers were there.
05:56Gary Williams was there.
05:57I got to see him and his lovely wife.
05:59And each guy going into the hall had a presenter with them.
06:03So some of our guys, guys we know well that have been on the show and are friends in the
06:07program, were there.
06:08So Walt Williams, huge Skins fan.
06:11Lamont Jordan grew up a huge Burgundy Gold fan.
06:17And DeQuell Jackson, who played in the NFL and obviously knows the game.
06:21Talking with those three guys about that tie, B-Mitch, I mean, Walt couldn't talk about it.
06:27He was just like, I can't discuss that anymore.
06:29He had already texted me.
06:32Hey, two of the three had already texted me.
06:37Lamont and Walt.
06:39But I was talking to Lamont about the Catron Allen release because I do think to win this game tonight,
06:45you're going to need one of these guys to thump it.
06:48Like, I don't know that Bill's a thumper.
06:50I don't know that they have a true thumper.
06:52But you're going to need to grind some yardage out tonight on the ground.
06:57And I guess it's kind of unique because, like, the whole West Coast times, like, I started the radio show.
07:04It was dark here, right?
07:06The sun is coming up now.
07:07But Washington has until 4 o'clock to make any roster decisions for tonight with the elevations, right, from the
07:15IR.
07:16And you're looking at Amos.
07:17You're looking at McNichols.
07:18I think both of those guys might play and have a real role tonight.
07:23So, I guess that's 4 o'clock Eastern because the game kicks at 5 o'clock Pacific.
07:29So, I mean, they're going to have to make those decisions, I guess, 1 o'clock here.
07:32It's going to be really interesting to see what ends up happening there.
07:36For me with the script, and we've talked about this and talked about it, and they've talked about it and
07:41claimed they're practicing it.
07:42But the pre-snap penalties, the procedural stuff has got to be cut out, period.
07:48Like, you're not going to win tonight if you're hurting yourself.
07:52I'm with that.
07:53And, you know, I've been saying that for weeks now.
07:55I just can't stand that.
07:57I mean, don't jump.
08:00Don't line up wrong.
08:03Look, if you're a receiver, talk to the damn ref.
08:05He's out there.
08:06He'll let you know if you're on the line off.
08:10Totally.
08:11Let's go to Charles in Potomac.
08:14What's up, Charles?
08:17Hey, how are you guys?
08:18Doing good, man.
08:18Nice to see you.
08:19Thanks for having me on.
08:21You know, the thing that I was thinking tonight, you know, in order for them to get a victory,
08:25they're going to have to play defense 100% of the game.
08:28That's going to be the most important part for them tonight, you know,
08:31because the defense seems to get wore down by the time the fourth quarter sings around
08:35and you've got these guys scoring on you.
08:36So, to me, that's going to be the way to the winning path tonight.
08:42Yeah, man.
08:43The second half, as much as the eye test shows that this defense looks a lot different from last year,
08:50the numbers do not back that up.
08:52So, the second half effort, intensity, schematics, whatever it is, has to match the first half
09:00because the Niners are an excellent second half team.
09:03They do the bulk of their scoring in the second half.
09:05They get you.
09:06So, it's got to look different tonight to get a win.
09:10Let's go to Shane in Fairfax.
09:12What's up, Shane?
09:14What's up, Paul?
09:15It's J.P.
09:16B. Mitch.
09:16How you guys doing today?
09:17Good, man.
09:17Hey, brother.
09:18How you doing?
09:19Hey, look, J.P., if anybody can hear Jimmy, it's you, man.
09:22Come on, man.
09:23Thanks, bro.
09:25Hey, look.
09:27The role players.
09:28God, I love J. Andrews.
09:28The depth chart, right?
09:30We've got to score a touchdown on special teams.
09:32We've got to block a field goal.
09:34We've got to block a punt.
09:36We've got to win on all three phases of the game.
09:38I know that's cliche, but it's true.
09:41It's accurate tonight.
09:42And the pre-snap penalties, you hit it on the head.
09:46You cannot start first and 15, first and 20 on this defense,
09:51and he's going to be running for his life all game.
09:54And the second day, he's got to step up.
09:56And, look, the role players, as I said, I hear them like,
09:59the role players have got to step up.
10:01Your depth chart, the next man up mentality, we've got to see it tonight.
10:05Like, you drafted these players, Adam, and now it's time.
10:09It's like, where the hell is Luke McCaffrey been?
10:12These are draft picks.
10:12You just cut a draft pick that you hit at Allen.
10:16We could have used him in between the tackles.
10:18But yet, he's not like, what are we doing?
10:21Like, there's a lot of questions to be asked after this game.
10:23If it's a blowout, let's call it what it is.
10:26The trailer deadline's coming.
10:28And it's Adam.
10:29It's like, this is your players, man.
10:31Let's see them perform.
10:32Get him on the field.
10:36Appreciate the call, Shane.
10:37And I'm shocked he didn't say it.
10:39But credit to Shane's Tennessee volunteers.
10:42I mean, they just pushed Bama around on Saturday.
10:46So, credit to them, man.
10:49He's right, though.
10:50Like, this is in all three phases.
10:52You know what you can't have tonight, Ryan?
10:53Every game is all three phases.
10:54That's what they've got to have.
10:55Every damn game.
10:57You know what you cannot have tonight?
10:58Right.
10:59Damn missed extra points.
11:02Yeah, I'm not going to get into that one.
11:04You can't have it.
11:05You better not have it.
11:08Cannot.
11:09800-636-1067.
11:11800-636-1067.
11:14You know one thing I do like for Washington tonight?
11:17You should have Diggs, Terry, and Okonkwo out there.
11:21That'll help.
11:22So, with Jaden, we have seen that for exactly two quarters of football.
11:26And it was Jaden's first game back.
11:28And in the first half against Philly, Jaden looked a little rusty.
11:31Like, he looked like he hadn't played in a year.
11:33So, that combination of those three players could go a long ways.
11:40That's a lot of speed and athleticism on the field.
11:43Let's go to Tony and Clinton.
11:45Tony, what's the script tonight for a dub?
11:48Okay, hit me out on this one, okay?
11:50Hit me out on this one.
11:52Can he please coach a 60-minute football game and stop playing for the moment
11:58and stop, quote-unquote, playing to win?
12:01Every single game, he's made some decision where it was fourth and two,
12:06fourth and three, fourth and four, where we middle of the field,
12:09where in some weird circumstance, where the aggressive play-to-win thing
12:13is to go forward to do this because you're trying to score a touchdown,
12:15you need this.
12:16But when they fail, it completely changes the tide of the game
12:20as opposed to, at the 48, putting the ball and trying to get them inside the tent
12:24and playing a full football game.
12:27They can't do that anymore.
12:28Like, the Colts game, when they went forward, when they didn't have to,
12:31when they were in total control, and the Giants game, the Philly game,
12:34the Cowboys game at the goal line, it's been these decisions in the sake of going forward
12:39or being aggressive and playing to win, which in reality is just bad game management.
12:44So they have to coach in terms of trusting the team for a full 60 minutes
12:50that the defense is going to play 60 minutes, and they do not have to make these
12:53middle-of-the-game decisions that completely change the momentum and tide of the game
12:58for absolutely no reason.
13:00Agreed.
13:01Listen, DQ has not been good this year, period.
13:04And the record reflects that.
13:06To come out of a game, a division game, where you're desperate for a win
13:10and you're up 14 with eight minutes left, that's on the head coach.
13:15And you're starting to see moves around the league.
13:17A GM just got fired.
13:18An Indy.
13:18Like, you're going into a bye week.
13:21This has to be, as much as it has to be Jaden's best game
13:24and it needs to be De'Ron's best game and Kinlaw and Sonny Stiles.
13:27This has to be DQ's best game.
13:29And what he's really good at is building cohesion in a locker room, right?
13:35And I think he will have that.
13:38But you've also got to be good in-game.
13:40Like, you've got to make the right decisions.
13:42You've got to manage the clock.
13:44Maybe I'll text Grant here in the break.
13:46The managing the clock and all that stuff definitely needs to happen.
13:48But, you know, when it comes down to the plays that are called,
13:51damn, players got to execute them too now.
13:53Agreed.
13:53And I think, look, everybody got to get better.
13:56It's like, we can sit up here and say DQ.
13:58We can say Jaden.
14:00I always say, if everybody else do their job at a higher level,
14:05it's easy for that quarterback to be who he really is.
14:08So, maybe if all these damn offensive players, do your job.
14:12Flip it over.
14:13Defensive players.
14:14Don't just make it have to be O-Way and Chase on.
14:18Everybody else come up in there and do something too.
14:20When they put pressure on somebody,
14:22can you have your guy covered by like a yard instead of five yards?
14:27Totally.
14:28You know, I mean, it's like right now I need to see everybody on this damn team improve.
14:34Not just one coach, one player, every damn player.
14:37Because I haven't seen that.
14:39I watch all the games, and I can't say I've seen 12 to 14 people a week doing something.
14:47That's 22 people on the field.
14:48I need to see more than 12 to 14.
14:50I need to see 19, 20, 21, 22, all getting the job done.
14:55Brian, if the Commanders lose tonight, the NFC East would become the first division in NFL history to be winless
15:02in consecutive weeks in which all teams played in the division, all the teams in the division played a game.
15:08Yeah, I saw that.
15:09That's crazy.
15:11Yep, it is.
15:11This thing is wide open.
15:14Yep, but I mean, that's exactly the NFL.
15:17It's like you have to understand everybody gets hurt.
15:20Everybody makes mistakes.
15:22But you got to be at a point to capitalize when they do.
15:25And right now, their division is like saying, hey, we want you to win it.
15:29And if you go start controlling that, now you can start going after people around the league.
15:33We want you to win it.
