00:06Hello, and welcome back to TCM.
00:08I'm Dave Karger.
00:09Our Saturday afternoon lineup continues now with a war movie that's set during the D-Day
00:13invasion but was released more than a decade later.
00:17From Allied artists in 1956, it's Screaming Eagles.
00:21The title refers to the nickname for the 101st Airborne Division, and the film follows a
00:26group of soldiers in the infantry regiment assigned to parachute into Normandy on the
00:31night before D-Day.
00:33Their mission doesn't go entirely to plan, and it's complicated by the presence of one
00:37bitter private who butts heads with everyone, including the compassionate lieutenant in charge
00:43of the platoon.
00:44Screaming Eagles was a low-budget production from Allied artists, and there are no big-name
00:49stars in the cast here.
00:50But you may recognize several of the actors from work they went on to do later.
00:54Tom Tryon, who plays the difficult new recruit, later starred in Otto Preminger's 1963 film
01:01The Cardinal, and also played a significant role in another D-Day drama, The Longest Day,
01:06from 1962.
01:08The cast also includes a handful of actors who became bigger stars on television, including
01:13Martin Milner, future star of the hit series Route 66 and Adam 12, Alvie Moore, who played
01:20Hank Kimball on the CBS sitcom Green Acres, and Paul Burke, who starred in two dramatic
01:25series, Naked City and 12 O'Clock High.
01:28You'll also see Robert Blake, who went on to give his most memorable performance in 1967,
01:34playing the killer Perry Smith in the film adaptation of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood.
01:39From 1956, directed by Charles Haas, and also starring Jan Merlin, this is Screaming Eagles.
