00:211920 novel by d.h lawrence from 1969 it's women in love ken russell wasn't actually the original
00:28choice for director it was silvio narizano the director behind georgie girl who had come up with
00:34the idea for this adaptation suggesting it to the american producer larry kramer after a few failed
00:40attempts at the adapted script narizano left the project and kramer pitched it to stanley kubrick
00:46jack clayton and peter brooke when they all said no he went to ken russell russell had success with tv
00:52movies though his two previous features had not done well but he had plenty of thoughts about how
00:58to make this adaptation work for a modern audience and rewrote the script with larry kramer adding more
01:04dialogue from the original book set in a small mining town in england between the two world wars
01:10the story follows two sisters ursula and goodrin and their romances with two friends rupert and
01:17gerald kramer knew from the start that he wanted to cast alan bates as the intellectual rupert but it
01:23was russell who thought of oliver reed for the part of gerald the son of the owner of the mine
01:27reed looked nothing like d.h lawrence's character but he'd recently been in the hit musical oliver
01:34and importantly he was game for a scene that ken russell really wanted to include a scene that has
01:40become infamous a nude wrestling scene between rupert and gerald as the sisters vanessa redgrave
01:47and faye dunaway were both asked to play ursula but in the end the part went to jenny linden
01:52and as goodrin they cast theater actress glenda jackson in just her third credited film role and she
01:59won an oscar for her performance the bfi national archive digitally remastered this movie in 2015
